2025 U.S. Open picks: Three long-shot bets to win at Oakmont

Scottie Scheffler may be a decisive favorite (+280) to win the 2025 U.S. Open, but this tournament has all the right ingredients for chaos. As well as Scheffler has played lately, the U.S. Open has a habit of humbling even the most in-form golfers. And this version of the tournament, which is being played at the notoriously difficult Oakmont Country Club in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, should do just that. This is the 10th time that Oakmont will play host to the U.S. Open, and in the last two iterations, this track chewed up the field. Dustin Johnson won the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont with a final score of 4-under par and was one of five players in the red after 72 holes that year. Nine years prior, Angel Cabrera won at Oakmont with a final score of 5-over par. In other words, you should be preparing for maximum chaos in Western PA this week. That should be music to your ears if you're someone who likes to have a flutter on a long shot or two at major championships. Even better news is the fact that so much value will be sucked up by Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau (+700), and Rory McIlroy (11/1), that you're going to get some whopper prices on players with actual winning upside. Can Patrick Reed tame Oakmont with his fantastic short game? Getty Images 2025 U.S. Open long-shot picks Aaron Rai (125/1, Caesars) It makes sense to target two specific types of players when looking for a long shot this week. The first group is players who do a solid job of avoiding trouble with a strong game off the tee. That's Aaron Rai's music. Ranked No. 1 on the PGA Tour this season in driving accuracy, Rai has had a year with plenty of ups and downs. He's got four top-15 finishes this season, but he's also missed four cuts, including in each of his last two outings. More encouraging, however, is the fact that Rai has had some strong performances in the toughest events on the calendar. He finished T19 at the PGA Championship, T14 at THE PLAYERS, and T11 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. If you think the key to success in this tournament is to grind out something around even par, Rai should be on your card. Patrick Reed (125/1, BetRivers) The second type of skillset I'll be looking for this week is the ability to get out of trouble with some short-game magic. Patrick Reed has that in spades. The greens at Oakmont are going to be quick and challenging, but Reed's touch on and around the dance floor should give him a leg up over most of the field. Sungjae Im (125/1, Caesars) There does seem to be a bit of a correlation between Oakmont and Augusta National, which is why this could be a good week to have some exposure to Sungjae Im. The South Korean has three top-10 finishes at Augusta, including a T2 in 2020 and a T5 this April. Like Rai, Im's accuracy off the tee should keep him out of trouble, so long as the rest of his game is working. 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge picks: Three long-shot bets for Colonial

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The PGA Tour will make its annual stop at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth this week for the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge. Colonial has hosted a PGA Tour event every year since 1946, making it the longest-running non-major on the golfing calendar. There's a good reason why the Tour has stopped at this track for the last 79 years – this is a challenging course to play. Colonial is a par-70 that measures out 7,289 yards from start to finish and can play tough, especially if the wind picks up. The current forecast is calling for some thunderstorms Thursday and Sunday, with the windiest days expected to be Friday and Saturday. A tough course with some iffy weather makes this a tough tournament to project, but the bookmakers aren't being shy about taking a stance. Scottie Scheffler has been installed as a +250 favorite, which is giving off Tiger-in-his-prime vibes. The co-second favorites are Daniel Berger and Jordan Spieth, both of whom currently sport 22/1 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. The field really opens up outside of the top four or five players, so this tournament is ripe for the picking when it comes to trying to find a big price. It's also produced plenty of long-shot winners, including Kevin Na (2019), Jason Kokrak (2021), Emiliano Grillo (2023) and Davis Riley (2024). Akshay Bhatia's lone PGA Tour win came in Texas in 2024. Getty Images 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge long shots Akshay Bhatia (70/1, FanDuel) Two months ago, it looked like Akshay Bhatia was on his way to big things in 2025. The 23-year-old had just put the finishing touches on a third-place finish at THE PLAYERS, his third top-10 finish in four starts between February and March. Things have stalled for Bhatia since then, with three missed cuts and no top-40 finishes in his last six starts. We'll buy the dip. Bhatia has as much talent as anybody in this field not named Scheffler, and he's proven to be the type of player who can handle challenging setups, like he saw at THE PLAYERS. Bhatia is a former PGA Tour winner, and that victory came in the Lone Star State at the 2024 Valero Texas Open. Betting on golf? Emiliano Grillo (100/1, FanDuel) There is a lot of boom or bust to Emiliano Grillo's game. When he's dialed in, Grillo can go tee-to-green with the best of them, but he's also a threat to completely come unglued at any moment. At 100/1 odds, you can live with that, especially since he's had a lot of great moments at this course. The Argentinian is a former champion at Colonial (2023), and has two other top-10 finishes in nine appearances at this track. Grillo's form is about what you'd expect it to be at this point in his career, with a missed cut and two top-20 finishes in his last four outings. Adam Schenk finished T5 at the CJ Cup in the beginning of May. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Adam Schenk (250/1, Caesars) Our last play will come on the man that Grillo defeated in a playoff at the 2023 iteration of this tournament, Adam Schenk. A long-time PGA Tour pro, Schenk has zero wins in 229 events, but he does have a couple of runner-up finishes and a handful of top-fives, including one three weeks ago at the CJ Cup, which took place just 56 miles away, just outside of Dallas. Schenk had missed seven of eight cuts around that T5 at the CJ Cup, but he's clearly comfortable in Texas, so we'll bet on him finally getting into the winner's circle at a massive price. 2025 PGA Championship picks: Top prop bets, top-10 finishes at Quail Hollow

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The second major of the 2025 season, the PGA Championship, is set to tee off on Thursday, May 15, at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. Rory McIlroy, just one month removed from his maiden Masters win, and Scottie Scheffler, just two weeks removed from his first victory of the season, are the +450 co-favorites, with Bryson DeChambeau right behind them at +700. Bookmakers pull out all the stops for major championships, offering punters a whole menu of betting options, including all sorts of prop bets for just about every player in the field. We've sorted through the lot of them and picked out our favorites below: 2025 PGA Championship picks: Best prop bets Aaron Rai top-10 finish (10/1, bet365) The consensus seems to be that the best path to success at Quail Hollow is by overpowering it off the tee, but I'm going to trust Aaron Rai for a different skillset with the driver. One of the most accurate players off the tee, the Englishman should keep himself out of trouble, which is notable when you'll have most of the field looking to lean more into power over accuracy. Quail Hollow is not an easy course to manage, but Rai has proven himself quite adept at playing well on difficult tracks, earning top-15 finishes at THE PLAYERS and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Aaron Rai is coming off a T23 finish at last week's Truist Championship. Getty Images Rai likely doesn't have the oomph to his game to win, but he's steady enough that he should be able to hang around the leaderboard all weekend. Min Woo Lee Top-40 finish (+100, bet365) Great with the driver and on the greens, Min Woo Lee is trending towards some big things in his career. The Australian only has one top-10 finish at a major (he finished T5 at the 2023 U.S. Open), but he's been a solid performer in 14 appearances at golf's grand slam events. Lee has made the cut in 10 of his 14 appearances at majors, and he finished outside the top 30 in just two of those. This is priced as a coin flip, but I think Lee is more likely than not to rack up a finish inside the top 40. Sungjae Im Top-5 finish (14/1, bet365) Sungjae Im has been a boom or bust player at majors thus far in his career. He's played 22 of them in his career and has missed 11 cuts. But when he plays on the weekend, he has a habit of hanging around the top of the leaderboard. Im has eight top-25 finishes, four top-10 finishes, and two top-5 finishes in his major career, and has finished T7 and T5 in the last two grand slam events. Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee, Paul McGinley, Johnson Wagner, and Todd Lewis, anchored Live From THE PLAYERS post-round coverage on GOLF Channel. Following are notes and quotes from today's coverage. The PLAYERS Championship – Final Results ON TOMORROW MORNING'S PLAYOFF Hicks on what makes THE PLAYERS so special: 'We've got a playoff between J.J. Spaun and Rory McIlroy which epitomizes it. A guy looking for win number two and the hall of famer to be Rory McIlroy.' Kisner on the player's mindset going into tomorrow's playoff: 'All you're trying to do is focus on that first tee shot on hole 16 and hitting the fairway so that you know it's a birdie opportunity, and then it's game on when you get to 17 tee.' ON CONDITIONS AT TPC SAWGRASS AND WEATHER DELAY Kisner on handling the four-hour weather delay today: 'You just don't have time to do your normal prep. Most guys get to the golf course two hours, two and a half hours before their tee time. This time around, they're sitting around the locker room, laying down, napping, watching TV, eating, drinking, and suddenly a guy walks in and says, 'We're going back in 45 minutes.' It changes everything, everybody rushes. I always struggle with I have different feels, you know when you're playing you've got the momentum, adrenaline going. You get certain feels that you're going with in the round and then suddenly it's like starting a whole new day…They're all going to be trying to find new feels.' Faxon on players regaining feel following the delay: 'It definitely takes a shot to trust it. Players are now wearing sweaters that they weren't before we went off. Everything feels a little bit different.' Kisner on how a delay can help a player who was sputtering in the round: 'Hopefully when you got back on the range for this warm-up, you got some better feels, and you get a little more confident. Not sure where J.J. Spaun was practicing 62-yard bunker shots around the practice area, but if you get back on the range and you find a good rhythm and you find some good feels, then you might be really confident coming out of this weather delay.' ON RORY MCILROY (-12, T1) McIlroy to Smylie Kaufman post-round on having a three-shot lead: 'I hit a pretty bad tee shot on 14 and gave myself a good chance for par there and then I had two really good chances on 15 and 16. I felt like it got a little darker on 15 and 16, there was like a little cell that was a few miles away and really struggled to read those two putts. So I had two good chances that slipped by there on both those holes…Ultimately a good two putt on 18. All day it was a bit of a battle. I'm standing here feeling like I probably should be going home with a trophy tonight, but that's fine. I'll reset and hopefully go home with a trophy tomorrow morning…It was nice to two-putt that and at least give myself a chance tomorrow.' McGinley on McIlroy: 'I can understand why he's disappointed. That was there to be won. He did the hard work, he got himself in position, and then flatlined.' Hicks on McIlroy's par putt on 18: 'If you're a fan of Rory, you know about all the history, especially at the U.S. Open last summer. Excruciating misses coming down the stretch.' Hicks on McIlroy walking up the 17th hole with a one-shot lead: 'This is golf pretty much as good as it gets…You've got Rory McIlroy, the most popular player in the game in this kind of setting -- the island green.' Kisner on McIlroy's chances at the start of the final round: 'When you look at the top of that leaderboard, you don't see a ton of I was in that top three, I wouldn't like the way that Rory started today with a birdie.' Faxon on how McIlroy prepared for the final round: 'He was very calm this morning. He watched two Will Ferrell movies last night just to laugh. Who else (in the field) did that?' ON J.J. SPAUN (-12, T1) Spaun to Cara Banks post-round: 'I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I just kind of put a lot of faith in myself and my caddie Mark (Carens)…I think the little break we had with the weather helped me regroup and reset and kind of came out with a different mindset instead of being so nervous.' Spaun to Todd Lewis on keeping his focus: 'I just kind of put my head down and started trying to clutch up. I started telling myself that I have nothing to lose. He's got the lead, so now even more I have nothing to lose. Started trusting myself more, committing to my shots, committing to my swing and fortunately made some birdies coming in.' Chamblee on Spaun: 'You really have to tip your cap to Spaun. Just think for a second. You've got to deal with the changing winds, you've got to deal with the rain, you're dealing with clearly the strongest player in the field starting birdie-eagle. You're in the lead dealing with delays. It's really hard to find the hidden harmonies in that chaos.' McGinley on Spaun: 'You have to give him credit for not just sitting back and taking a big check finishing in second or third and hunting down McIlroy down the stretch.' Kisner on Spaun's missed birdie attempt on 18 to win: 'He had it right in the jaws too, I bet you he was loving watching that roll.' Mackay on Spaun watching McIlroy putt: 'J.J. walked up to me and asked me what Rory was up to in terms of what he was putting for up on the 18th green - turns out it was a par. J.J.'s caddie then walked up to him, put his arm around him, and said 'let's stay in the moment.'' Mackay on Spaun's relief on third shot on 9th hole leading to birdie: 'It was fascinating. He was in a horrible lie and he was standing in a sprinkler, but still nowhere near the fairway. He took relief and within that club (of relief) was another sprinkler. He intentionally dropped it in that sprinkler, got a second club length away from that, and got himself into the fairway. Kisner: 'A lot of misses to the right for J.J. early in the round. He just looks anxious and getting a little quicker than he has been.' ON LUCAS GLOVER (-10, T3) Hicks: 'Talk about stringing together sensational tournament after tournaments, this guy at the age of 45 says there's still a lot winning left in his career. By the way he's played this week, who would doubt him?' Kisner: 'He's just such an elite ball striker, it keeps him around at all types of tournaments, all types of golf courses. He can flat still play with these young guns.' ON BUD CAULEY (-9, T6) Kisner on Cauley's early final round struggles: 'Bud has looked late all day with his arms to me. He has hit every ball a little to the a little bit of that pressure. He just needs to get his composure and get his rhythm back with his arms.' Kisner: 'His putting has left him today. He was putting so well early in the week, but not that well for the season, and he seems to be reverting back to that.' --NBC SPORTS--
