The State will neither forgive nor forget ‘anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of BJP, says TNCC president Selvaperunthagai

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Monday responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that a BJP-AIADMK government would be formed in the State in 2026, saying the State would neither forget nor forgive the 'anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of the BJP-led government at the Centre. He said a BJP government in Tamil Nadu would always remain a 'mirage'. In a statement, he termed as hypocritical Mr. Shah's remarks that he regretted he couldn't speak Tamil. '...what better proof is needed of the government's betrayal than the fact that it had allocated only ₹24 crore over three years for Classical Tamil, while granting ₹664 crore for Sanskrit, a language spoken by only 24,000 people? How will Mr. Shah answer for depriving Tamil Nadu of ₹2,152 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan as a punishment for opposing Hindi imposition through the National Education Policy? Since 1968, Tamil Nadu has followed the two-language policy of Tamil and English,' he said. As for Mr. Shah's claims about the grant of more funds to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said, 'According to official data, in the past seven years, the BJP-led government at the Centre has collected ₹7.38 lakh crore in direct taxes, the GST, and cesses from Tamil Nadu, but returned only ₹2.56 lakh crore to the State. After exploiting Tamil Nadu financially, what evidence does Mr. Shah have to prove his claim that more funds have been given to the State?'

Different gods being used by BJP for political gains: VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan

CHENNAI: TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai and VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday accused the BJP of politicising religion by organising a Murugan conference in Madurai while ignoring the principles of social justice. Speaking to reporters at the Chennai airport, Selvaperunthagai said, 'When it comes to social justice, Tamil Nadu stands as a model — not Uttar Pradesh or Gujarat. It is the Congress at the national level and the DMK at the state level that have consistently raised their voice for caste-based census.' Speaking about the BJP's Murugan conference at Madurai, Selvaperunthagi said, 'We are not saying that holding a Murugan conference is wrong. But our question is — will the BJP dare to organise a Murugan conference in Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh? Do they have the courage to tell the people there that a deity named Murugan exists?' VCK chief Thirumavalavan while addressing journalists at the airport, said, 'They are using different gods for political gains — Ram and Ganesha in the north, Durga and Kali in Bengal, and Murugan in Tamil Nadu. But Tamil people will not fall for this.. Even Lord Murugan will reject such divisive politics,' he said.

Tamil Nadu Congress invites DMDK to join INDIA bloc amid rift with AIADMK

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday invited Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) to join the INDIA bloc led by the DMK in Tamil Nadu. This has come amid signs of discontent brewing in the DMDK camp over being 'sidelined' by the AIADMK, especially in the recent Rajya Sabha seat allocation. DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant recently expressed disappointment over the AIADMK's alleged failure to honour a 'pre-poll assurance' to allot a Rajya Sabha seat to her party. The DMDK was part of the AIADMK-led alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Responding to a query on Premalatha's public gratitude to the DMK for passing a condolence resolution in honour of DMDK founder Vijayakant at its recent general council meeting, Selvaperunthagai said, 'This is my personal opinion, but I believe DMDK should align with the INDIA bloc under DMK's leadership. We welcome them wholeheartedly.' The TNCC chief's invitation is seen as a political signal at a time when the DMDK is reassessing its future. It may be noted that Premalatha also paid tribute to DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi on his 102nd birth anniversary. Recalling Karunanidhi's contributions to Tamil Nadu and the Tamil language, she also remembered his personal relationship with Vijayakant, saying, 'Kalaignar graciously presided over our wedding. The bond between him and Captain was deep and unforgettable.' Political signalling 'This is my personal opinion, but I believe the DMDK should align with the INDIA bloc under DMK's leadership. We welcome them wholeheartedly,' TNCC chief Selvaperunthagai said on Tuesday. The invitation is seen as a political signal at a time when the DMDK is reassessing its future. Many daydreaming about cracks in alliance, but it's firm: TNCC chief

Trichy: Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai on Monday asserted that the INDIA alliance in the state remains "strong and intact," dismissing speculation of internal fissures. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to reporters after garlanding a newly installed statue of veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan in Puthur, Trichy, Selvaperunthagai said, "Many are daydreaming that our alliance will break, but it is very strong. We are united by common ideals, and this alliance is one for the people." His remarks came in response to questions about VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan's recent informal interaction with state president K Annamalai and Union minister L Murugan at the Trichy airport. The Congress leader also slammed the BJP-led Centre for the recent inclusion of Periyar's caste suffix in a UPSC prelims question paper. "Periyar had renounced his caste identity. When did he ever identify himself with a caste? This is a deliberate attempt by the BJP govt to divide people along caste, religion, and language lines," he said. On criticisms by TVK chief Vijay that chief minister M K Stalin's recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was politically motivated, Selvaperunthagai clarified that Stalin's visit was to press for long-pending fund allocations. "This is not about fear of ED raids. The BJP govt has consistently withheld funds, and now they're placing conditions like mandatory acceptance of the NEP. This is authoritarian," he said. Welcoming the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the limits of gubernatorial powers, the TNCC president said the upcoming elections would be a decisive moment for Tamil Nadu. "The BJP and AIADMK, who once operated covertly and now do so openly, will face the people's verdict. Our alliance is the only one that can ensure real development for Tamil Nadu," he said.
