Pogacar shares Tour de France week two expectations and strategy

TOUR DE FRANCE: Defending champion Tadej Pogacar has shared his thoughts on the crucial second week of the Tour de France, describing it as fast-paced and decisive despite being shorter than the first. Speaking on the rest day, the Slovenian cyclist revealed his expectations, rival assessments, and personal goals for the upcoming stages. Pogacar, who currently sits second overall, 29 seconds behind leader Ben Healy, acknowledged the intensity of the opening week. 'Explosive, nervous, stressful, and super-hard,' he said, also pointing to the heat and Visma team's tactics as challenges. He expects the next phase to be quicker but equally demanding. The 26-year-old highlighted the unpredictability of this year's race, with new contenders like Healy and Kevin Vauquelin shaking up the competition. 'The field is packed, it's going to be a huge fight even for the podium and especially for the yellow jersey,' Pogacar said. He anticipates a shift in leadership, particularly on the Hautacam climb, where he hopes to reclaim the yellow jersey. Looking ahead, Pogacar pinpointed the uphill time-trial to Peyragudes as a key moment. 'I'm really looking forward to this week, especially the uphill time-trial,' he said, hinting at his confidence in the stage. While he remains cautious about rivals, Pogacar emphasized that the pressure is on others to attack. 'In the coming days I'm under no pressure to attack, it's up to them if they want to get ahead of me,' he stated. With Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard trailing, the battle for supremacy is set to intensify. - AFP

Tour de France Stage 10 results, standings: Simon Yates wins, Ben Healy nabs yellow jersey

The first mountain stage of the 2025 Tour de France led to a shake up in the race for the yellow jersey at cycling's most prestigious event. Simon Yates of Great Britain won Stage 10, which featured eight different ascents and challenged riders with climbs totaling nearly 14,600 feet. But it was the jockeying for position going on behind him amongst those challenging for the overall lead that provided the most drama. Advertisement Ben Healy, who represents Ireland and won Stage 6 last week, grabbed the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogačar. Healy finished in third place during the stage, 31 seconds behind Yates but more than 4 minutes, 20 seconds ahead of Pogačar. Healy started Monday's race ‒ a 165.3-kilometer course that began in Ennezat and ended on Puy de Sancy mountain ‒ outside of the top 10 in the chase for the yellow jersey. He'll now keep it for at least two days, with the first rest day of the 2025 Tour de France scheduled for Tuesday, July 15. Pogačar sits in second place in the overall standings and trails Healy by 29 seconds. Tour de France Stage 7 results, standings: Tadej Pogacar wins, reclaims yellow jersey

Tadej Pogačar didn't give up the yellow jersey at the 2025 Tour de France for long. The defending champion and three-time winner of cycling's preeminent test sprinted past Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and top contender Jonas Vingegaard near the finish line to win Stage 7 on Friday, July 11 and take back the overall lead at this year's Tour de France. Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands entered the race with the yellow jersey after finishing Stage 6 with a one-second lead over Pogačar, who was the pre-Tour favorite. Stage 7 also featured a late crash involving multiple riders, most notably Pogačar's teammate with UAE Team Emirates XRG, João Almeida. Mattia Cattaneo, one of Evenepoel's teammates with Soudal Quick-Step, also withdrew from the race about 70 kilometers into Friday's 197-kilometer course from Saint-Malo to Mûr-de-Bretagne Guerlédan. Pogačar also took over first place in the chase for the green jersey during Friday's stage win and moved closer to Belgium's Tim Wellens, another UAE Team Emirates XRG teammate who will enter Stage 8 on Saturday with the polka dot jersey as the best climber thus far at the 2025 Tour de France.
