More: Texas Tech officials provide details on fatal shooting on campus with university police This information comes after Texas Tech officials hosted a news conference Tuesday in Lubbock, presenting a brief outline of the events that occurred just north of the Jones AT&T football stadium on campus. According to previous A-J reporting, the incident occurred at 12:45 a.m. on June 24 after two officers, who were working an unrelated traffic violation in the 2700 block of the Marsha Sharp Freeway access road, noticed suspicious activity in the parking lot on the north side of the Jones AT&T Stadium. TTUPD Chief Kyle Bonath said during the news conference that the officers saw someone making "furtive gestures" around a vehicle that had an open door and was not parked in a normal spot. That is when the officers went to investigate. During the interaction, TTUPD states that Simboli produced a gun and began firing shots at officers, who returned fire, killing him. It was also during the interaction that two TTUPD officers were injured and taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Bonath said one officer was released from the hospital, and the other remained hospitalized as of June 24. The identities of the officers have not yet been released. TTUPD has further stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing as of June 25. Mateo Rosiles is the Government & Public Policy reporter for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
