Perikatan rubbishes claim 10 of its MPs switching sides, calls for proof amid defection rumours
KOTA BARU, June 1 – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has challenged those claiming that 10 of its MPs have pledged support for the government to provide evidence. Utusan Malaysia cited its chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan saying such allegations were no longer surprising amid the current political atmosphere. 'Why only 10 MPs, when we have 74 seats in Parliament? So, when we hear stories like this, it's not surprising anymore in today's political landscape. 'Some even say 11 government bloc MPs are planning to cross over — who knows?' he asked. PN currently has 68 seats in the Dewan Rakyat — 43 from PAS and 25 from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. The Malaysian United Democratic Union (Muda) has also joined it in the Opposition bloc. Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, reiterated that PN remains confident in the loyalty of its MPs and believes none intend to defect. Reports had earlier surfaced citing unnamed opposition sources alleging that 10 PN MPs had signed a pledge backing the leadership of the Unity Government. The unnamed sources claimed the move was intended to 'safeguard national political stability' and to 'reject efforts to undermine the people's mandate through continued perception warfare.'

PN urges AG to intervene in Anwar's reference application
PN's Takiyuddin Hassan said the attorney-general has a duty to scrutinise the legality and constitutionality of the prime minister's application and provide formal advice on the matter accordingly. PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional has urged the attorney-general to intervene in an application by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to refer eight questions of law to the Federal Court, including whether he has immunity from a civil suit scheduled for trial next month. Opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said the AG, as the government's legal adviser entrusted with upholding the Federal Constitution, must intervene in the matter. Takiyuddin, who is a lawyer, suggested that the AG join the proceedings as an intervenor or appear as amicus curiae (friend of the court). He said the AG has a duty to scrutinise the legality and constitutionality of the prime minister's application and provide formal advice on the matter accordingly. Takiyuddin also said the AG held the duty to prevent the establishment of a 'dangerous' judicial precedent that may undermine the principle of accountability for political leaders. The judge must first determine whether the legal questions posed cross the threshold for them to be referred to the Federal Court. Anwar wants the apex court to rule whether Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from a suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. The other questions posed include the High Court's obligation to hold a 'threshold inquiry' to determine whether the suit constitutes an abuse of process or a threat to public interest, and if so, whether it must be stayed or dismissed 'to preserve constitutional governance'. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 24, 2022. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, filed the suit against Anwar in 2021, claiming that he was assaulted at the PKR president's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar has denied the claim and filed a countersuit.

‘A mere apology is not enough': PAS sec-gen admits fault, says party will accept firm action over flawed Jalur Gemilang
PETALING JAYA, May 16 — PAS is facing mounting criticism for offering nothing more than a cursory apology after a promotional poster for its Himpunan Teguh Memimpin Terengganu (TMT 1.0) 2025 event featured an inaccurate depiction of the Jalur Gemilang. While the party has since corrected the poster and taken internal disciplinary action, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan conceded that such a serious oversight demands more than just a perfunctory apology. 'A mere apology should not be accepted as a standard solution for such errors without firmer measures being taken,' he said in a statement today. He added that PAS supports transparent, fair, and firm action by the authorities to prevent similar instances of insensitivity or negligence. 'As citizens, PAS believes that everyone must uphold the highest level of respect and pride for national symbols at all times, as a reflection of our national identity and patriotism,' he said. The controversial poster, circulated last week ahead of a gathering in Terengganu, depicted the national flag with only an 11-pointed star and 12 stripes instead of the correct 14 each.

PAS backs firm action over Terengganu event flag gaffe
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the authorities must carry out their duties under the law with transparency, fairness, and firmness. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PAS has backed calls for a thorough investigation and firm action over a blunder involving an illustration of the Jalur Gemilang in the promotional material for a gathering organised by its state chapter in Terengganu. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan acknowledged the incident involving the logo for the Himpunan Teguh Memimpin Terengganu (TMT 1.0) 2025, which depicted an incomplete national flag with incorrect star points and stripes. Upon being alerted, Terengganu PAS issued a public apology and corrected the error. Disciplinary action was also taken against the personnel involved. 'However, PAS firmly agrees that an apology alone should not be accepted as a sufficient resolution for such errors. This must not become the norm,' Takiyuddin said in a statement. He said that while PAS welcomed the internal steps taken by those involved, the party also supported efforts by the authorities to carry out their duties under the law with transparency, fairness, and firmness, to prevent such incidents from recurring. 'PAS believes that all parties have a duty to show the utmost respect and pride for our national symbols at all times, as a reflection of our national identity and patriotism,' he said. On Wednesday, Terengganu PAS assistant secretary Hanafiah Mat said they could not stop those who remained dissatisfied and continued to demand further investigations despite the party's apology. Outlining the steps taken to rectify the error, he said 'there is nothing more we can say'. Government party leaders previously called for firm action against Terengganu PAS over the TMT 1.0 logo. MCA Youth information chief Neow Choo Seong said an apology should not be treated as an automatic solution each time a national symbol is disrespected or misrepresented. He also reminded the public of PAS's previous response to similar incidents involving incorrect renditions of the Jalur Gemilang, stressing that enforcement must be carried out 'without fear or favour'. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh meanwhile called on MPs to draft specific legislation on the issue to enable stronger enforcement. Similar flag snafus had involved the education ministry, Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, and even a Singapore-based exhibition vendor, triggering a strong public backlash and prompting PAS itself to call for firm action on the matter. Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairudin as saying that 16 reports were received on the matter, and that an investigation paper had been opened.
