PETALING JAYA : PAS has backed calls for a thorough investigation and firm action over a blunder involving an illustration of the Jalur Gemilang in the promotional material for a gathering organised by its state chapter in Terengganu.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan acknowledged the incident involving the logo for the Himpunan Teguh Memimpin Terengganu (TMT 1.0) 2025, which depicted an incomplete national flag with incorrect star points and stripes.
Upon being alerted, Terengganu PAS issued a public apology and corrected the error. Disciplinary action was also taken against the personnel involved.
'However, PAS firmly agrees that an apology alone should not be accepted as a sufficient resolution for such errors. This must not become the norm,' Takiyuddin said in a statement.
He said that while PAS welcomed the internal steps taken by those involved, the party also supported efforts by the authorities to carry out their duties under the law with transparency, fairness, and firmness, to prevent such incidents from recurring.
'PAS believes that all parties have a duty to show the utmost respect and pride for our national symbols at all times, as a reflection of our national identity and patriotism,' he said.
On Wednesday, Terengganu PAS assistant secretary Hanafiah Mat said they could not stop those who remained dissatisfied and continued to demand further investigations despite the party's apology.
Outlining the steps taken to rectify the error, he said 'there is nothing more we can say'.
Government party leaders previously called for firm action against Terengganu PAS over the TMT 1.0 logo.
MCA Youth information chief Neow Choo Seong said an apology should not be treated as an automatic solution each time a national symbol is disrespected or misrepresented.
He also reminded the public of PAS's previous response to similar incidents involving incorrect renditions of the Jalur Gemilang, stressing that enforcement must be carried out 'without fear or favour'.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh meanwhile called on MPs to draft specific legislation on the issue to enable stronger enforcement.
Similar flag snafus had involved the education ministry, Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, and even a Singapore-based exhibition vendor, triggering a strong public backlash and prompting PAS itself to call for firm action on the matter.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairudin as saying that 16 reports were received on the matter, and that an investigation paper had been opened.

In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid said the celebration highlights the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), two individuals who are symbols of unwavering obedience and sacrifice to Allah SWT. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, prayed that Aidiladha would bring peace and blessings to all Malaysians, especially those facing various life challenges. 'To the pilgrims who are currently in the Holy Land, we pray that your worship will be accepted by Allah SWT and that you will return as accepted haji and hajah,' he said. MCMC clarifies mobile phone data collection for national statistics, says no identifiable user information involved

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards. These included the MPD National Workshop held from Sept 2 to 5, 2024, attended by representatives from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, and MNOs (CelcomDigi, Maxis, TM Tech, U Mobile, and YTL). 'This initiative aligns with international best practices. It mirrors similar projects already implemented in countries such as Indonesia and Brazil, where anonymised telecommunications data is used to enhance national statistics while fully safeguarding user privacy,' it said. — Bernama
