Air quality initiative launched in Dibba Al-Hisn
Reducing air pollution in line with Sharjah's vision This initiative comes under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It supports Dibba Al-Hisn's vision to become a leading city in health and environmental standards as part of the "Sharjah Healthy City" programme. The municipality's efforts focus on key criteria such as water quality, sewage system efficiency, food safety, and air pollution reduction — all of which contribute to the city's status as a sustainable and healthy environment. Mobile unit to monitor vital locations The initiative reflects Dibba Al-Hisn Municipality's commitment to best environmental practices and institutional cooperation in sustainable development. The mobile unit will assess air quality at key locations across the city, including residential and agricultural areas and public facilities. This step is part of the municipality's strategy to regularly monitor environmental indicators and gather accurate data to enhance quality of life. Results from the air quality assessments will be used to improve agricultural and landscaping plans, ensuring they meet the highest environmental standards. Supporting long-term environmental strategy Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al-Hisn Municipality, said the municipality is dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals and the wider community by fostering a healthy environment and reducing pollution. He emphasised that initiatives like this enable precise and ongoing monitoring of air quality across the city and help guide appropriate actions and decisions. He added that the initiative is also expected to raise public environmental awareness and provide accurate data to support decision-making in environmental and public health planning — such as identifying suitable tree-planting sites, improving infrastructure in high-pollution areas, and directing awareness campaigns. The measurements will help monitor environmental changes year-round and link them to health indicators, in collaboration with relevant entities in Sharjah, to enhance safety and quality of life in Dibba Al-Hisn. Al Yahyai thanked Sharjah Municipality for their productive cooperation, stressing that such partnerships with relevant Sharjah authorities help improve service efficiency for the local community and support the emirate's overarching strategy to improve quality of life and achieve sustainable development.

Dibba Al Hisn Municipality launches 'Jood Al Saaf' initiative
A Tradition Aligned with the Date Season The 'Jood Al Saaf' initiative comes in conjunction with the start of the date season, which is warmly anticipated by UAE citizens as it signals the arrival of summer. For many, especially senior citizens, this season evokes memories and stories from a past deeply intertwined with the land and its traditions. Community Appreciation and Cultural Identity The initiative was met with great appreciation from local dignitaries and heads of government departments and institutions in the city. It reinforces Emirati cultural identity, as dates are considered an essential part of the UAE's agricultural heritage. Diverse Date Varieties and Productive Palm Groves Dibba Al Hisn Municipality oversees approximately 800 palm trees spread across various parts of the city. This season, the harvest included abundant yields from over five different varieties of rutab, most notably Naghal and Khneizi. Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Khadija Najib, Director of the Agriculture Department at the municipality, stated: 'This diversity in harvest significantly contributes to local self-sufficiency in dates during the season. The annual expansion of palm cultivation is a key pillar of the city's agricultural sustainability plans, especially in the face of environmental challenges and climate change. Palm trees help maintain ecological balance, preserve soil, and lower temperatures in agricultural zones, thereby enhancing the city's resilience and supporting long-term food security.' Advanced Agricultural Practices She added that the Agriculture Department has implemented advanced systems to care for the palm trees, including scheduled fertilisation, irrigation, and environmental analysis programmes in cooperation with specialized entities. Scientific studies have been conducted to assess soil and water quality, and crop testing ensures safety and top-tier quality. These integrated scientific plans aim to optimise agricultural returns and ensure sustainable growth in the sector. Strengthening Community Bonds and Heritage His Excellency Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, emphasised the municipality's commitment to organising this initiative annually, saying: 'This initiative enhances social connection in the city and reinforces the values and traditions passed down from our ancestors. It also helps raise awareness about the importance of agricultural heritage, as the date season symbolises blessing and Emirati generosity.' Successful Season Backed by Agricultural Efforts Al Yahyai noted that this year's date season saw plentiful yields thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Agriculture Department in caring for palm trees and green spaces throughout the city. These efforts have contributed to the success of agricultural plans and resulted in a productive season. Embracing Tradition Across Generations He also pointed out that 'Jood Al Saaf' received a warm response from the residents of the city due to its strong ties to local heritage and folklore, which continue to be passed down through generations. Welcoming the summer season with joy and the symbolism it carries remains a cherished Emirati custom. A Strategic Sector in National Food Security The palm cultivation sector in the UAE is considered a vital component of the country's food security system. The UAE has given this sector great importance through initiatives and programmes aimed at protecting palm trees from harmful pests and adopting modern techniques to improve the quality and variety of dates, with the ultimate goal of producing top-grade fruits.

Tree-planting initiative by Dibba Al Hisn Municipality in WED
Leadership involvement Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, and department directors participated in the project. The action is intended to boost afforestation efforts, improve the area's natural aesthetics, minimise maintenance and water usage, and restore the symbolic importance of the GHAF tree, which has historically given shade and symbolised principles of tolerance and coexistence. Gesture to promote sustainable lifestyles The Agriculture Department handed additional ghaf tree saplings to participating department heads as a symbolic gesture to urge them to implement the project in their workplaces and social contexts, as well as to practice sustainable planting in their daily lives. Ghaf in every institution Khadija Najib Al Nuaimi, Director of the Agriculture Department of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, noted that the ghaf planting is part of the " Ghaf in every institution" campaign initiated by Sharjah's Environment and Protected Areas Authority. The campaign encourages afforestation at government and private institutions while emphasising the ghaf tree's national symbolism of tolerance, resilience, and a strong connection to the UAE's environment. The ghaf was chosen specifically because of its high adaptation to desert environments. Najib further stated that the effort goes beyond simply giving shade and fresh air; it actively contributes to transforming carbon emissions into clean air for future generations. Municipality's broader sustainability vision According to Talib Al Yahyai, this event is part of a series of environmental events aimed at supporting long-term environmental efforts and making Sharjah a role model in natural resource conservation and ecological balance in the UAE. Al Yahyai emphasised the necessity of community involvement in environmental protection, as well as the value of such activities in increasing awareness and reinforcing collective efforts to conserve the natural environment for future generations. A global call to act World Environment Day, commemorated every year, provides a chance to highlight global environmental challenges and inspire people to take concrete steps to protect the world. In this context, Dibba Al Hisn Municipality intends to take an active role in this global movement by developing meaningful projects that raise awareness and encourage responsible environmental practices.
