Chennai corporation to revamp two flyover spaces for parking, pedestrian use
The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced redevelopment projects for two major flyover underpasses in the city — at T. Nagar and Alwarpet — at a combined cost of Rs 7.5 crore. The initiative is part of a broader effort to make better use of idle urban spaces and improve public amenities for residents and commuters. Under the Rs 3.75 crore redevelopment plan for the space beneath the North Usman Road–Mahalingapuram Road junction flyover in T. Nagar, provisions will be made for two-wheeler Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, to be set up in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). In addition to EV infrastructure, the site will feature designated parking for two-wheelers, five commercial kiosks to support local businesses, and essential amenities for public use. The civic body will install eight public toilets — three for men, three for women, and two accessible for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). A Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water facility will also be provided to enhance convenience for commuters and pedestrians. An official from the Corporation confirmed that the redevelopment will not affect existing infrastructure, such as the U-turn beneath the flyover, auto-rickshaw stands, or ambulance parking zones. 'We are ensuring that vital transport and emergency service spaces remain intact while enhancing the surrounding area,' the official said. The redesigned space will be landscaped with trees, plant beds, ornamental lighting, and street furniture to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Public seating areas and tactile paving will be installed to support accessibility, particularly for the visually impaired. The area will also feature paved flooring and proper stormwater drains to ensure durability and cleanliness. CCTV cameras and signage will be installed to enhance safety and wayfinding. Simultaneously, a similar Rs 3.75 crore redevelopment project will be undertaken beneath the TTK Road–CP Ramaswamy Road flyover in Alwarpet. Although this location will not include EV charging stations, it will offer organised parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, commercial stalls, landscaping, seating arrangements, and decorative lighting. CCTV surveillance and upgraded drainage infrastructure will also be implemented. Separate tenders have been floated for both projects, and work is expected to begin after finalisation of the bids.

Power distribution network in Chennai, nearby districts set for an upgrade
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) is planning a major upgrade to the electricity transmission network by commissioning new substations and improving several existing ones in Chennai and its neighbouring districts to prevent power cuts and voltage fluctuations during the summer months. The TNPDCL, which is the restructured entity of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), will set up 12 33/11 kilovolt (kV) substations to ramp up the distribution network in areas with increased power demand. While the Electricity Department has adequate electricity generation capacity, certain parts of the city and Tiruvallur district, faced unscheduled power cuts during the peak summer months this year. Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said the delay in the upgrading and renovation of the 110-kV substation in Avadi, which is one of oldest substations, has resulted in several western suburbs such as Avadi, Pattabhiram, and Paruthipet facing power disruptions. While welcoming the announcement to construct three new 33/11 kV substations, he wanted one to be constructed at the newly inaugurated TIDEL Park. K.S. Gopalakrishnan of Avadi said the substation in Pattabhiram caught fire due to power overload last year, leading to outages that lasted for over two days. He wanted officials to construct new substations within the proposed deadline. A senior official said the decision to set up substations was taken after taking into consideration the increasing power demand in several areas of north and west Chennai. These substations, to come up at a cost of ₹186.96 crore, will be commissioned in Broadway, M.K.B. Nagar, Pudupet, Mylapore, Mannurpet, Surapet, Avadi, and Sholavaram, among others. Similarly, in Kancheepuram, which includes Sriperumbudur and nearby industrial zones, 20 new substations have been proposed at a cost of ₹325 crore. These are part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme for 33/11 kV infrastructure improvement works, being undertaken at a cost of over ₹1,800 crore, and for which the REC has sanctioned a loan amount of ₹1,632 crore. A total of 133 new substations is planned to be built across the State. Meanwhile, J. Radhakrishnan, TNPDCL Chairman and Managing Director, chaired a meeting with senior officials on fast-tracking the turnkey substation projects. In addition to the new substations, the Electricity Department will upgrade the capacity of 33/11 kV substations at 11 places in the city at ₹39 crore, and at nine places in Kancheepuram district at a cost of ₹73 crore. The works will begin soon, the official said.

Tamil Nadu industries seek freeze on power tariff for a year
Industry associations in Coimbatore have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government and the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation not to revise the electricity charges from July. Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association president Pradeep Natarajan said the average power consumption of industries, operation of MSMEs, and export orders for the manufacturing sector in Tamil Nadu have all seen a year-on-year decline. With the ongoing conflict in West Asian countries disrupting energy markets, trade routes, and financial sentiment, industries in Tamil Nadu, particularly MSMEs and export-driven manufacturers, are bearing the brunt. The Dearness Allowance/Consumer Price Index points during 2024-2025 have dropped. Hence, the Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) revision scheduled for July 2025 should be postponed, said Mr. Natarajan. 'This is not the time to increase power tariffs. Our industries are already struggling with falling demand, rising energy input costs, and mounting financial stress. A new tariff hike will only deepen the crisis,' he said in a press release. The Association sought a minimum one-year deferment of the multi-year tariff revision, status quo on current tariff levels until economic conditions stabilise, and special relief measures for energy-intensive and job-generating sectors. The Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to stall the proposed tariff revision with effect from July 1. Association president J. James pointed out that the fixed charges for MSMEs went up 430 % in 2022, and the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation was not reclassifying the tariff for micro units to 3 A (1) from 3 B despite orders from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission. Further 6 % tariff revision will lead to closure of MSMEs and job losses, he said.
