Former Auburn running back Tank Bigsby looking for a big year three with Jaguars

Former Auburn running back is getting a bulk of the Jaguars carries in practice per reports. Former Auburn running back Tank Bigsby is looking to help lead the Jacksonville Jaguars back to the postseason. Bigsby led the Jaguars in rushing last season with 766 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He made a big leap in his season in the NFL. In his rookie season, he rushed for just 132 yards and two touchdowns despite appearing in 17 games for the Jaguars. Another big leap in 2025 could mean his first 1,000-yard season as a professional. Training camp has begun for all 32 NFL teams, and the former Tigers running back has been a standout for the Jaguars. John Shipley of Jacksonville Jaguars on SI, described it as 'The Tank Bigsby Show." According to Shipley, Bigsby took a bulk of the carries for the team in practice over Travis Etienne. Bigsby and Etienne are both battling it out for the top running back spot. It says a lot that new head coach Liam Coen was giving Bigsby most of the carries. It should be noted that Jacksonville was not in pads during the training camp session. They were just in helmets and shorts. Jacksonville is looking to rebound from another disappointing season. The Jaguars went 4-13 last season and went 9-8 the season before. They have not made the playoffs since the 2022 season. Auburn fans should be excited to see what Bigsby can do this preseason as he attempts to stake his claim as the Jaguars' top running back. He is one of the most talented running backs to play for the Tigers. During his three seasons with Auburn from 2020-22, Bigsby rushed for 2,906 yards and 25 touchdowns. Bigsby is ranked No. 8 all-time at Auburn in yards and tied for eighth in touchdowns with Jarquez Hunter. 2025 Jacksonville Jaguars' roster preview: RB Tank Bigsby

With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Jacksonville Jaguars' 91-man roster. Going alphabetically, up is running back Tank Bigsby. Tank Bigsby's profile Height: 5-11 Weight: 215 NFL experience: 2 seasons Age: 22 College: Auburn No. 4 2024 Snap count totals Offense: 351 Special teams: 46 2024 PFF grades Offense: 68.1 Special teams: 48.1 2024 Season Review In his second NFL season, Bigsby took on a much larger role on offense, carrying the ball 168 times in 2024, compared to just 50 carries as a rookie. Bigsby averaged 4.6 yards per rush and scored seven touchdowns. Those 4.6 yards per carry that Bigsby averaged were tied for the 13th-most among running backs. He was one of the more difficult ball carriers to bring down as well, ranking third in average yards after contact and 13th in missed tackles forced, despite being 28th in carries. This all resulted in big plays for Bigsby, who was 11th in PFF's breakaway rate, which measures how often a back had a rush of 15 or more yards. On the flip side of all that, fumbles were an issue at times, with Bigsby losing three of them last season. Looking ahead to the 2025 season What the playing time and general workload will look like for Bigsby—as well as Travis Etienne and Bhayshul Tuten—within Liam Coen's offense remains to be seen. That will be one of the more intriguing training camp battles to take place this summer. However, this new-look Jaguars offense should lead to improved efficiency from the running back position. For one, GM James Gladstone has reshaped the offensive line unit with six new additions between free agency and the NFL draft. This has created a lot of competition, which hopefully results in better play up front. In addition to that, the multiplicity element that Coen wants prevalent throughout the offense can help keep defenses off balance and guessing by throwing a variety of looks at them, which can create opportunities for the skill position players to take advantage of. A strong running game is a key component to Coen's offense, not to mention that having a reliable rushing attack keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations. Big question facing Travis Etienne, Bhayshul Tuten, Jaguars RBs in training camp

The Jacksonville Jaguars' rookies will report for training camp on July 19th, the veterans on July 22nd, and the first practice will take place on July 23rd. So with training camp almost here, we will be taking a position-by-position look at the Jaguars' roster, specifically examining the one big question that faces each unit. Up next are the running backs. If you missed our quarterbacks preview, you can find it here. How does the playing time shake out at running back for the Jaguars? In what has quickly become a crowded running back room this offseason, with draft picks Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen joining Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby, this will be one of the more intriguing positional battles to watch this summer. The running game is a staple within Liam Coen's offense. For one, a strong running game keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations, which then can open up opportunities in the passing game. In addition to that, this is a scheme where the running and passing concepts go hand-in-hand and are married together, building off of each other throughout a game and even week-to-week. "Obviously there's going to be a lot of changes in verbiage and terminology and all those things and the system is different," Trevor Lawrence said early in the offseason. "But I think the run game and how it's built off of that and I think just his knowledge on how to set up the run game with play-action, screens, and then obviously mixing in dropbacks and shots downfield. "I think the plan there I'm really excited about how he's going to set it up and how we're going to game plan it." It's also going to be important that the running back position has a presence in the passing game as well. Last season in Tampa Bay, running backs Rachaad White and Bucky Irving both ranked top 10 among backs in targets. Under Coen, an emphasis has been on finding ways to get Etienne the ball in space, which is where he's been at his best in his career. Etienne is coming off a 2024 season where he rushed for only 558 yards at 3.7 yards per attempt. "He's been getting me a lot in space," Etienne said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "I love me one-on-one with anybody and just being able to make that first man miss and being able to get the extra yards. I feel like Liam has a great knack for getting the players the ball. It's more so players than plays with Liam and he has a great feel for the game." Bigsby was one of the better backs at generating big plays, according to PFF's metrics, but he has put the ball on the ground. Tuten brings big-play abilities of his own to the backfield with 4.32 speed. However, he had fumbling issues of his own in college and is navigating the learning curve that comes with making the jump to the NFL level. As of now, we can assume that all three of these backs will be a part of the equation on offense, but again, how that shakes out exactly is unknown at this time. When it comes to Allen, he could carve out a role in the passing game, where he has ample experience from his time at Syracuse. But the roster math is also going to be a part of that equation. Not to say that the Jaguars can't keep four running backs, but going heavy at one position means going light at another. "LeQuint's been awesome," Lawrence said.. Pass protection, it seems like he really understands it. Great hands. Hard worker. I've been impressed with his attitude and how he carries himself." Latest RB rankings highlight unknowns at position for Jacksonville Jaguars

Speaking with NFL execs, coaches, and scouts, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler compiled his ranking of the top running backs this season, a list in which the Jaguars' Travis Etienne fell from being top 10 to unmentioned. Now, the Maurice Jones-Drew has put together his annual running back rankings, and near the bottom of that list is Etienne at No. 28. Advertisement "He's under immense pressure to perform with Bigsby threatening his position as RB1 and with the Jags drafting a pair of RBs in Bhayshul Tuten (who has upside in this scheme) and LeQuint Allen," Jones-Drew wrote. "There are several scenarios that end with a player not named Etienne leading the ground attack for Jacksonville, but I think he still has juice left in those legs." Etienne is coming off a 2024 season where he rushed for just 558 yards and averaged only 3.7 yards per carry. One major change under Liam Coen is that there has been a greater emphasis this offseason on getting Etienne the ball in space, which is where he has always been at his best. The unknowns for the Jaguars at running back really lies in what the playing time is going to look like for each back. As Jones-Drew highlighted, it's not as if the Jaguars are short on options. Tank Bigsby was one of the more efficient backs last season when it came to producing explosive runs. Bhayshul Tuten brings electric 4.32 speed and playmaking potential to the backfield, while LeQuint Allen has ample pass-catching experience. Advertisement On the flip side, however, Bigsby and Tuten have both had their issues with putting the ball on the ground, while Tuten and Allen are also currently navigating the learning curve that comes with making the jump to the NFL level, and in Coen's offense, that includes learning a robust playbook. Success on the ground is a must in order for Coen's system to be operating at max capacity. For one, a strong run game keeps an offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations, but schematically, the run and pass game concepts are strongly tied together in this system, so if one isn't working efficiently, the other can be affected. Execs, coaches, scouts rank top RBs, Jaguars' Travis Etienne falls out of top 10

NFL executives, coaches, and scouts recently ranked the top 10 running backs heading into the 2025 season, and the Jacksonville Jaguars' Travis Etienne was nowhere to be found this year. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently spoke to execs, coaches, and scouts across the NFL to determine who the "league's true insiders" view as the top running backs in 2025. Advertisement A year ago at this time, Etienne was No. 10 in these rankings, but this year, he wasn't even among the Honorable Mentions or those in the 'Receiving Votes' category. "Etienne failed to deliver a third consecutive 1,000-yard season for the struggling Jags in 2024, rushing for 558 yards and two touchdowns on a career-low 3.7 yards per carry," wrote ESPN. "How first-year coach Liam Coen integrates Etienne into the offense will be among the storylines worth watching in 2025 training camp." As the numbers indicate, Etienne's production took a big step back last season. Not helping matters was the play of the offensive line, a unit that has been reshaped this offseason. Etienne will be competing this summer with Tank Bigsby and Bhayshul Tuten for snaps. One fairly big change that Liam Coen has made so far to help get Etienne back on track is prioritizing getting him the ball in space, whether that be on jet sweeps. screens, or as a ball carrier out of shotgun. Advertisement "He's been getting me a lot in space," Etienne said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "I love me one-on-one with anybody and just being able to make that first man miss and being able to get the extra yards. I feel like Liam has a great knack for getting the players the ball. It's more so players than plays with Liam and he has a great feel for the game." The running backs play a vital role in making things go within Coen's system. Looking at the Tampa Bay offense last season, the backs were featured regularly in the passing game, while the running and passing game concepts build off each other in this scheme to keep defenses off balance and guessing. Etienne will have a role this season in the offense, but what exactly that looks like still remains to be seen.
