Latest RB rankings highlight unknowns at position for Jacksonville Jaguars
Now, the NFL.com's Maurice Jones-Drew has put together his annual running back rankings, and near the bottom of that list is Etienne at No. 28.

"He's under immense pressure to perform with Bigsby threatening his position as RB1 and with the Jags drafting a pair of RBs in Bhayshul Tuten (who has upside in this scheme) and LeQuint Allen," Jones-Drew wrote. "There are several scenarios that end with a player not named Etienne leading the ground attack for Jacksonville, but I think he still has juice left in those legs."
Etienne is coming off a 2024 season where he rushed for just 558 yards and averaged only 3.7 yards per carry. One major change under Liam Coen is that there has been a greater emphasis this offseason on getting Etienne the ball in space, which is where he has always been at his best.
The unknowns for the Jaguars at running back really lies in what the playing time is going to look like for each back. As Jones-Drew highlighted, it's not as if the Jaguars are short on options.
Tank Bigsby was one of the more efficient backs last season when it came to producing explosive runs. Bhayshul Tuten brings electric 4.32 speed and playmaking potential to the backfield, while LeQuint Allen has ample pass-catching experience.

On the flip side, however, Bigsby and Tuten have both had their issues with putting the ball on the ground, while Tuten and Allen are also currently navigating the learning curve that comes with making the jump to the NFL level, and in Coen's offense, that includes learning a robust playbook.
Success on the ground is a must in order for Coen's system to be operating at max capacity. For one, a strong run game keeps an offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations, but schematically, the run and pass game concepts are strongly tied together in this system, so if one isn't working efficiently, the other can be affected.

Trendlines: The Dallas Cowboys' historic ineptitude
Welcome to Trendlines, your weekly installment of what's trending up and what's trending down in the world of sports. This week, millions of Americans breathed a sigh of relief. No longer will they (and in this case me) be worried about whether their weekends would continue to be filled with boredom. No, the NFL's Hall of Fame game marked the beginning of the preseason. It's the first sign that autumn is near and football is back. Every new season means hope for teams that have never won a Super Bowl (like the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers, the Hall of Fame game participants). It, unfortunately, also means that some classic teams that have recently struggled get another shot at rediscovering their greatness of yore. And this is where we begin. There are few things more delicious than 'America's team' (and the quotes are there for a reason) falling flat on its face over and over again. Can you believe Dallas hasn't appeared in or won a Super Bowl since the mid-1990s? There are people I work with who weren't even alive then. The Cowboys were truly mediocre last year and they're hoping to bounce back this season under new coach Brian Schottenheimer. I don't know how Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones landed on Schottenheimer, but things aren't looking good for the team with a Lone Star. Vegas odds put the Cowboys' chances of winning a Super Bowl this year at about 2%. How very, very sad that Dallas' Super Bowl drought looks like it'll hit the big 3-0 after this season. When the Patriots were winning all of those Super Bowls, the big question was whether quarterback Tom Brady or head coach Bill Belichick was more responsible. Well, the Pats haven't won a playoff game since Brady left. Brady went on to win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Belichick, on the other hand, is now coaching in college. A post shared by CNN Sports (@cnnsport) This has left the team from the Bay State in a world of hurt. They finished last season with more than three times as many losses as wins. They were so bad that they dumped their first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and brought in Mike Vrabel. This season? The betting odds say that they will miss the playoffs again. We're a long way from nobody being able to stop the Brady/Belichick duo. Delicious. Although they lost last night, the Lions have one of the five best chances of winning a Super Bowl this season. They have a better shot than any team that's never won one, except for my Bills. I used to joke that the Bills hadn't made the playoffs since before my bar mitzvah. The funniest jokes are always the true ones. They didn't make the playoffs from the 2000 season through the 2016 season. Those days are gone. The Bills are basically in contention all the time now. They have won a playoff game in every season dating back to the 2020-2021 season. This five-year streak is the longest in the franchise's history. The question is whether they can finally get to the mountain top with MVP quarterback Josh Allen. They have the second best chance, according to Vegas odds makers. If Allen and the Bills can do it, then who says the Lions, Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings or Tennessee Titans won't be next?

Raiders Nab Frustrated Commanders Star in Recent NFL Mock Trade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Washington Commanders were one of the biggest stories in the NFL following their shocking run that almost ended with a Super Bowl appearance. They remain in headlines now, but not for the reasons that they want. Like most teams, the Commanders found themselves with a player intent on signing a new contract before training camp. While other front offices have been able to end their holdouts, that has not been the case in Washington. With the 2025 season just around the corner, things have hit a fever pitch between Terry McLaurin and the Commanders. Also read: Shocking Update Emerges on Commanders WR Terry McLaurin McLaurin was absent from minicamp, and after missing the opening days of training camp, he eventually made his return. Though he's back with the team, the star wideout is limited due to an ankle injury. Terry McLaurin #17 of the Washington Commanders runs the ball to score a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 26, 2025 in Philadelphia,... Terry McLaurin #17 of the Washington Commanders runs the ball to score a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 26, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Eagles beat the Commanders 55-23. More LaurenAlthough he made his long-awaited return, McLaurin and the Commanders are still at odds. The two sides are so far apart in talks that reports emerged Thursday that he has requested a trade out of Washington. Following the news of his trade request, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton put together multiple frameworks for the Commanders' wideout. In one scenario, they ship him to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a second-round pick and Jakobi Meyers. "Last year, Meyers proved that he can be a go-to target in a passing attack after Davante Adams requested a trade from Las Vegas. The seventh-year wideout went on to record career highs in catches (87) and receiving yards (1,027). Commanders quarterback Jayen Daniels can depend on Meyers as his most reliable target," Moton wrote. "From the Raiders' perspective, McLaurin would be an upgrade over Meyers. McLaurin has racked up 1,000-plus receiving yards in five consecutive terms, while Meyers has only one such season in his career." Dating back to his days with the New England Patriots, Meyers has been a fairly consistent wide receiver. He is also coming off his best year in the pros with the Raiders, racking up his first 1,000-yard season while also scoring four touchdowns. Also read: NFL Insiders Shut Down Any Possibility of Terry McLaurin Trade Though Meyers is a promising receiver, the Commanders' top priority should be retaining McLaurin. He's proven to be a strong complement to quarterback Jayden Daniels and is a pillar of the franchise. Having to move on from him would be a crushing blow for a team looking to get closer to contending for a championship. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
