'Mare of Easttown' Fans: The Show's Creator Is Back With Brand New Crime Drama 'Task'

Following the acclaimed Mare of Easttown, creator Brad Ingelsby is back with Task, a new HBO Max — and yes, this series is set Pennsylvania too. Inspired by his uncle, a former priest, and insights from the FBI, Task stars Mark Ruffalo as an ex-priest turned FBI agent investigating drug-house robberies in Philly's suburbs. The show also follows a garbage man with a double life. With Ingelsby's signature attention to detail and a compelling premise, Task is set to premiere on HBO Max later this year. Here's what you need to know! Mare of Easttown came out with a bang in 2021. The HBO series, which followed a detective investigating a small-town Pennsylvania murder, was nominated for 16 Emmys and took home four awards. Aside from Kate Winslet's acclaimed portrayal of Mare Sheehan, the show, created and written by Brad Ingelsby, was also revered for its detail-oriented portrayal of the titular town. This is precisely what inspired Brad Ingelsby to make his latest HBO series, Task, and set it in his home state again. "It's where I live now, it's where I grew up, it's where I was raised, and it's where a lot of the important relationships in my life were formed. It's also a place that I feel like I can speak about and write about with some conviction and authority," he detailed. The show centers on a former priest-turned-FBI agent named Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo, who leads a specialized task force investigating a wave of drug-house robberies in the working-class suburbs outside of Philadelphia. As the case unfolds, the story also pans to Robbie Prendergrast, a local garbage man leading a double life as he conducts heists on drug houses. Robbie's role is taken on by Tom Pelphrey. According to Brad, the whole premise of Task was actually inspired by his real-life uncle, who used to be a priest. And while speaking with his uncle about the priesthood, he came to learn that sometimes, clergymen are asked to assist the FBI. This led him to create Tom Brandis' character, a man who lived through events that shook his faith. As for where Robbie Prendergrast's storyline originated, Brad got the idea while speaking with a source at the FBI. Both garbagemen and mail carriers are "people that know a lot about your life, but you kind of ignore them. They're invisible. But they get your bills and your mail, and they go through your trash," he explained. The Task cast is stacked, including names like: Mark Ruffalo Tom Pelphrey Emilia Jones Fabien Frankel Raúl Castillo Thuso Mbedu Jamie McShane Alison Oliver Sam Keeley. The production is reportedly more complex than Mare of Easttown, too, but what Brad cares most about is doing Pennsylvania justice by getting the details right. That's why he consulted with various technical advisers, such as the Easttown Township chief of police, an FBI agent who really was a priest in the past, and even someone who'd previously been in a biker gang. "It gives the audience a sense of comfort that the people who have told this story know these people, and they care about them enough to make them really layered and honest characters. And that, to me, is important. Because I have to live here, so I'd better get it right," Brad said. Yes! HBO Max just dropped yesterday — and it's safe to say this show is gonna be pretty intense after watching! Task is supposed to premiere on HBO Max later this year, but an exact release date hasn't been confirmed yet. In the meantime, you can stream Season 1 of Mare of Easttown on Max now. You can stream Task on HBO Max once it premieres. Looking for more & news? Follow us on so you never miss a thing!

Suspected spy supplied Indian SIM cards to Pakistan

Jaipur: In a continued crackdown on espionage activities, intelligence agencies have arrested a suspected spy in Rajasthan for allegedly supplying Indian SIM cards to Pakistani intelligence operatives. The accused, identified as Qasim, is a resident of Bharatpur district in Rajasthan. He was arrested by Delhi Police's Special Task Force on Thursday and is currently in police custody. This arrest comes shortly after the apprehension of another suspect, Shakoor Khan, also from Rajasthan, for similar charges. According to police officials, Qasim had travelled to Pakistan twice -- the first time in August 2024 and then again in March 2025 -- spending a total of approximately 90 days there. During these visits, he is suspected to have established contact with agents of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Authorities revealed that Qasim was supplying Indian SIM cards to ISI operatives, who then used these numbers to contact Indian citizens via WhatsApp. The aim was to extract sensitive information related to the Indian Army and critical government institutions. 'In September 2024, the Special Cell/NDR received intelligence inputs indicating that Indian mobile numbers were being used by Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) for espionage purposes. During the investigation, Qasim's name surfaced as a key suspect,' said a senior Delhi Police official. Qasim had been under surveillance since September 2024. His movements and communications were closely monitored, leading to the discovery of his links with Pakistani handlers. A case has been registered against Qasim under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Official Secrets Act. Police are now working to uncover the full extent of the network involved in smuggling Indian SIM cards to Pakistan and gathering intelligence for the enemy nation. Officials said further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses. On Wednesday night, Shakur Khan, the Personal Assistant of former Rajasthan Minister and MLA Saleh Mohammad, was arrested by the Rajasthan Police on espionage charges. Khan, who works in the district employment office, was found to have phone numbers associated with Pakistan stored on his device, an official said.

South Dakota Attorney General clarifies scope of immigration enforcement agreements with feds

Attorney General Marty Jackley listens to testimony at a Project Prison Reset meeting on April 29, 2025, in Springfield. (John Hult/South Dakota Searchlight) South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley shared Friday that the new immigration enforcement agreement he aims to enter into with federal authorities is the same type Gov. Larry Rhoden aims for, but said his agents will only use that authority in limited circumstances. The agreements let officials trained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ask people about their immigration status and make warrantless arrests for suspected violations. Jackley's requested agreement between ICE and the state Division of Criminal Investigation is limited in scope, however, he said in a Friday press release. 'To be clear, I am restricting the use of this federal authority to violent criminals and drug dealers,' Jackley said. Governor, attorney general visit the border and seek a bigger immigration enforcement role Jackley first announced his intent to pursue the agreement during a news conference this week with Republican attorneys general at the U.S.-Mexico border. At the time, the type of agreement was not specified. The news came via the release of Jackley's proposed agreement, which operates under Jackley's direction. ICE had not yet signed the shared agreement signed stateside byDCI Director Dan Satterlee. ICE offers three types of agreements under Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. One, the Jail Enforcement Model, lets trained jailers ask those in their custody about their immigration status, and lets those jailers search ICE databases and issue immigration detention orders. Another trains local jail staff as ICE Warrant Service Officers, allowing them to serve immigration warrants obtained from a judge by ICE officers to inmates already in local custody. Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead and Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan both made those types of agreements earlier this spring. The third type of agreement offers the broadest scope of authority to local officers. The Task Force Model trains locals who work outside detention centers to act as limited immigration agents, enabling them to ask those they encounter in the normal course of police business about their immigration status, and to arrest them if they're suspected of violating immigration law. The Obama administration discontinued the type in 2012 due to concerns about racial profiling and civil rights violations. They were revived by the Trump administration earlier this year. Jackley and Rhoden, both Republicans and potential 2026 gubernatorial candidates, have characterized their support for the agreements as moves showing them to be in lockstep with President Trump's immigration policies. While Jackley said in a press release that his agents would use their immigration enforcement authority in limited situations, Rhoden spokeswoman Josie Harms would not expand upon the scenarios under which state troopers would use their authority once an agreement is in place for the highway patrol. Taneeza Islam, CEO of South Dakota Voices for Peace, said the general message will make victims of labor and sex trafficking less likely to come forward, and lets perpetrators threaten to turn their victims in for deportation if they attempt to flee. 'You have legal protections if you come forward, but victims don't know that,' Islam said. ICE has authority and supervision over all immigration-related activities, according to Jackley's agreement. Authorities must undergo ICE-led training and pass federal exams. ICE covers training-related travel costs and provides instructors and materials. Mark Ruffalo And Natalie Portman Are Getting Back Into The Rom-Com Game, And I'm Already Digging Their Netflix Movie's Premise

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Mark Ruffalo and Natalie Portman already have Marvel movies in common, with Portman as Jane Foster and Ruffalo as The Hulk. But before they delved into the superhero genre, they were also known for acting in intimate, steamy movies. Fortunately, the former MCU actors will be diving back into the rom-com genre by starring in a Netflix movie together, and I'm already loving the premise. One of the most fascinating things about these two is their ability to blend into any genre. This year, Portman has starred in the heist action-adventure movie Fountain of Youth (which is streaming on your Apple TV+ subscription) and will be in the animated 2025 Netflix release The Twits. Ruffalo is busy this year too, with the HBO crime miniseries Task. But if you'd like to see them come back to their rom-com goodiness roots, they'll both star in Lena Dunham's new Netflix movie Good Sex. Can I just say that I'm already digging the rom-com's original premise? Here's the intriguing plot from the streamer on X: Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo and Tucker Pillsbury (Role Model) will star in the Lena Dunham rom-com, GOOD SEX. After a decade in a failed relationship, Ally turns 40 and reenters the New York dating scene. She'll meet two men — one in his twenties and one in his fifties — who show her there's no set formula for good sex. Now, this is a love triangle I can get into. It'll be very interesting to see a 40-year-old have to choose between two different age groups and see which leading man gives her those steamy vibes. There have been plenty of recent movies that show age has nothing to do with who's good in bed, such as the A24 thriller Babygirl, The Idea of You (one of the best Amazon Original Movies), Netflix's Lonely Planet and more. But at least in this case, it's not just about the older woman going out with the younger guy (played by Tucker Pillsbury a.k.a Role Model). The 40-year-old Ally also has a man in her 50s sweeping her off her feet. Compared to the usual love triangles having to do with the rich and the poor, at least an unconventional setup like this will leave me guessing who Ally would choose. If anyone can pull off an original premise like this, it's Lena Dunham. She's an actress/writer/director who's never been afraid to delve into sexual themes. After all, her HBO show Girls got the world talking, which not only showed physically how sex can be messy, but also the emotional insecurities that come with it. With the Emmy nominee not afraid to tackle sex with honesty and humor, I have no doubts she'll do the same with her new Netflix movie. It'll be so nice to see Mark Ruffalo and Natalie Portman head back into the rom-com genre. You can't forget about Ruffalo sweeping Jennifer Garner off her feet in 13 Going on 30, Reese Witherspoon in Just Like Heaven, and Jennifer Aniston in Rumor Has It… Some of Portman's best movies happen to be in romantic comedies as well, like Garden State and No Strings Attached. As these two are capable of sharing chemistry with any of their screen partners, I'm sure the duo being paired together will bring something sexy and electric to their new movie. Good Sex's entertaining premise already has me sold knowing that Lena Dunham has written and directed Natalie Portman to get into a love triangle with Mark Ruffalo and Tucker Pillsbury. With the two leads heading back to the rom-com genre and the creative force of Girls behind it, how can we go wrong? Check out our 2025 movie releases in case the new Netflix rom-com finds its way there.
