TREMONT, Ill. (WMBD) — The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help locating a missing, endangered man on Friday. James Leach, 76, was last seen driving a silver Honda Ridgeline with Illinois license plate SNSGOLF, according to a sheriff's office Facebook post. He was believed to have been last seen in rural Tremont. Leach may be experiencing memory loss and confusion, according to the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office. TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WVNS) — The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office warned the community about scam calls. According to a post on the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, scammers are reportedly calling people and are pretending to be members of the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office. The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office stated that the scammers not only call from what appears to be local numbers, but they also pretend to be members of the sheriff's office, use the name and address of the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, request payment for fake fines for charges such as contempt of court, failure to appear, and more, and threaten arrest if financial or personal information is not given. According to the Facebook post from the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, they do not ask for payment or sensitive personal information to be given over the phone, and stated that people who get the scam calls are advised to not give out any financial or personal information and to hang up immediately. Tazewell County Sheriff's Office receives grant to expand EMT program

TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WVNS) — The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office received grant funding that will help expand their EMT program. According to a press release, the Norfolk Southern Corporation awarded $15,000 in grant funding to to expand the EMT program at the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office. Comcast announces broadband expansion project in Mercer County This funding, along with the continued support of our Board of Supervisors, will have an immediate impact on the work we do. We're thankful to Norfolk Southern for investing in our community and for supporting our mission. Sheriff Brian Hieatt Various divisions of the Sheriff's Office, including Patrol, Courthouse Security, School Safety, Civil Process/Code Enforcement, and the Detective Division, have people who are EMT-certified, which allows them to effectively serve the people in Tazewell County. According to the press release, some of the deputies who are EMT-certified help with staffing shortages by working part-time with local rescue squads, making Tazewell County one of two agencies in Virginia, and the first in southwest Virginia, with deputies who are also trained as EMTs. The press release stated that the funds will allow for the addition of seven additional EMT deputies to expand the EMT program at the Sheriff's Office. In 2023, Norfolk Southern started two community programs that the grant is a part of: The Safety First Grant Program and the Thriving Communities Grant Program. TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WVNS) — The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office warned the community about EBT card scams. According to a post on the Tazewell County Virginia Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, law enforcement received multiple reports about people with compromised Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. The post stated that the reports included information about unauthorized transactions that were made out of the area, and that the full amount was withdrawn from some people's accounts. Raleigh County Sheriff's Office warns community about scam calls The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office stated that people can protect their EBT cards by keeping their PIN a secret, changing their PIN regularly, and keeping an eye out for any unauthorized activity on their account. Individuals can also be careful when using the cards, cover the keypad when entering the PIN number, and look out for any tampered card readers. People can report suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions at their local department of Social Services, and additional information can be found on the Virginia Department of Social Services website. According to a Facebook post from the sheriff's office, the scammers will call people claiming they are from the sheriff's office and demand money from their victim for missing a court date. The scammer will claim to have a warrant for their victim's arrest and demand immediate payments or fines ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 to avoid arrest.
