Graeme McDowell's comment after banking €1.6 million speaks volumes about him
Graeme McDowell was all class as he shared the runner-up spot at LIV Golf Virginia. McDowell chalked up his top result of the LIV season to date – landing second on Sunday, just behind winner Joaquin Niemann who secured his fourth 2025 victory. The Portrush native, alongside Anirban Lahiri, pocketed a tidy €1.6 million for their efforts at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Showing true sportsmanship, 45-year-old McDowell was quick to heap praise on his fellow competitors after the triumph. The event saw some of LIV's heavyweights, like Bubba Watson, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm, making a mark, yet McDowell edged out this illustrious group to finish near the very top. "Nice to be up there with names like that," he remarked when asked about the calibre of players. "Those are pretty good names. I think it speaks to the golf course. "I think it speaks to the fact that it was a - it required a bit of thought. It required a little bit of cunning, if you like, and I think that's why so many experienced players played well. "I think it's a wonderful track. Obviously shout-out to the maintenance crew for the work they did to get the course ready after the rain. I really enjoyed the golf course. It was a great setup and the type of venue that LIV deserves here in the US." McDowell's heartfelt mention of the tireless maintenance workers and greens staff upon his latest performance speaks volumes about his character. Even though he didn't scoop the top €3.6m prize at the Virginia event, his stout finish and sizeable seven-figure earnings are just as sweet for the golfer who has often been missing from the winner's circle. Assessing his achievement on the leaderboard, prior to this high-pressure weekend in Virginia, McDowell was sharing 12th place as his pinnacle for 2025, measured during a tournament in Hong Kong. Sunday saw him notch his most impressive result within the LIV Golf circuit yet, nabbing second place just shy of victory, building on three top-10 placements accrued last year, reports Belfast Live. Nevertheless, his thoughts were immediately with those whose hard work made the event's smooth run possible – showing gratitude when most might be soaking up their own success. Meanwhile, Niemann's recent triumph in Virginia consolidates his standing as the reigning heavyweight of LIV Golf, forging ahead with a healthy lead above DeChambeau in the rankings. Next on the LIV Golf calendar is Dallas, returning as a familiar host from last year's Team Championship. McDowell currently sits in 25th place, just outside the 'Lock Zone'. The top 24 players in any LIV Golf campaign are guaranteed a spot in the following year's competition, though exceptions can be made for certain players. This was the case for McDowell after he finished both the 2023 and 2024 seasons in the 'Open Zone'. However, it seems he's well respected on the tour as Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka chose to keep him on board regardless.

Campbell taking time out to let wrist injury heal
Ben Campbell is confident a minor hiccup will not derail his plan to settle in for a long spell with LIV Golf. The Queenstown golfer is having an unexpected rest at home as he nurses a niggling wrist injury. He played the opening round at the LIV tournament in Mexico last month before withdrawing, and had to skip the following tournament in Korea. ''I just sort of strained a tendon and had a bit of fluid in my wrist joint,'' Campbell told the Otago Daily Times yesterday. ''So I'm home for a few weeks and just sort of getting that under control. It's nothing too serious, but just niggly enough.'' Campbell, 33, has not had a club in his hand since sustaining the injury, but is hoping to do a little putting this weekend then put his back into a full swing a week later. The injury to his right wrist came out of nowhere when he was warming up for the Mexico tournament. ''I hit a shot on the range and just really sort of grabbed a bit of turf. ''I didn't really think too much of it. I felt my wrist click a little bit but it felt fine. ''But it got worse and worse as the day went on, and I lost quite a bit of range in my wrist, which made it tricky on my backswing. ''I had an MRI the next day, and talked to the LIV doctor and our team physio, and we thought it was best to pull out and just have a couple of weeks off, because the end of the year gets quite busy and they were worried I could do more damage. ''It was a good call, I think. I've pushed things in the past and been out for a long time, so this is the right move.'' Recuperation time has given Campbell a chance to reflect on the first half of his inaugural year as a fully carded LIV golfer after a season as a reserve. Things have gone well for the humble ex-Masterton golfer. He sits 25th on the LIV money list - the top 24 are guaranteed full tour status next year - with earnings of US$2.19 million (NZ$3.64m), powered by a sizzling third place, and a cheque for NZ$2.6m, in the fourth tournament of the season in Singapore. ''It's been busy but good,'' Campbell said. ''It was nice to get off to a good start, and the third in Singapore was great. ''One more decent result would be nice because one of my main goals this year was to get that top 24 and guarantee a spot for the following year, and I've put myself in a good position.'' The next LIV tournament is the Washington, DC stop at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Then it is off to Dallas, Spain, the United Kingdom, Chicago and Indianapolis before the Team Championship - Campbell's RangeGoats, captained by Bubba Watson, are presently eighth - in Michigan. Campbell is particularly looking forward to playing the Valderrama course at the Spanish stop, and the JCB Country Club in England. ''Some of those American courses are pretty long for my length, so those two should be ideal.'' After the LIV season, Campbell will return to the Asian Tour in October-November for several International Series tournaments.

Young athletes participate in local MLB Pitch Hit and Run competition
COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WKBN) — About 60 kids participated in the MLB Pitch Hit and Run competition at Athletix Columbiana on Sunday. The program is a free event that provides kids aged 7 to 14 with an opportunity to showcase their baseball or softball skills. They were tested on their battling, throwing and speed. It was also a great chance for young athletes to work on fine-tuning their skills as the Little League season is just underway. 'Gives them exposure to something maybe they wouldn't have exposure to normally and just give them a nice experience. Maybe they're here meeting some new friends, hanging out with some kids on their team, just things like that. Just give them a new opportunity and an experience they wouldn't normally have,' said Rachel Wardle, the Athletix co-owner. The best from Sunday have the chance to go to the Team Championship event at an MLB stadium. Top scores qualify for an all-expense-paid trip for two to compete at Finals, which is hosted at the World Series. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
