Cardinals pitching prospect Tekoah Roby undergoes Tommy John, will likely miss 2026 season
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Tekoah Roby underwent Tommy John surgery and will likely not pitch until 2027, multiple team sources told The Athletic on Monday. Roby, 23, was placed on the injured list on July 14 and underewent the procedure on Friday. He entered the season ranked as the Cardinals' seventh-best prospect on the year list assembled by The Athletic's Keith Law. Advertisement Roby was promoted to Triple-A Memphis in June after posting a 2.49 ERA over 10 starts in Double A. He collected 87 strikeouts over 78 1/3 innings overall and was building a strong case for consideration in next year's major-league rotation. But injury befell the right-hander once more. Roby's availability has been limited since the Cardinals acquired him, along with infielder Thomas Saggese, in a 2023 trade that sent Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton to the Texas Rangers. He logged 58 1/3 innings in 2023, plus 13 2/3 in the Arizona Fall League, and 38 1/3 in 2024 due to various stints on the IL. RHP Tekoah Roby (AAA) tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in the @memphisredbirds 8-1 win vs. Charlotte last night, striking out 6 batters while only allowing one walk. Over his last 4 starts, Roby is 3-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. — Cardinals Player Development (@CardsPlayerDev) July 11, 2025 The Cardinals overhauled their player development this offseason, and Roby was of the first big beneficiaries. He was in the midst of his best season thanks to a retooled pitch mix. Roby was hurt and/or ineffective all of last year due to elbow trouble — a harbinger of what just happened — but the Cardinals turned him around by giving him a two-seamer, moving him from a straight change to a kick-change, and helping him tweak his slider to make it harder and give it some more horizontal movement. The slider became a real weapon for him to pair with the plus curveball, and the two-seamer helped reduce his hard-contact rates, since the four-seamer does tend to get hit hard despite plus velocity. He was so close to major-league ready with mid-rotation upside that Law considered him for his midseason top 60 ranking until learning he might be about to go under the knife. Advertisement Roby becomes the Cardinals' third pitching prospect to undergo Tommy John surgery this year. Cooper Hjerpe, the organization's first-round draftee in 2022, had it in April and 13th-ranked Sem Robberse in May. Starting pitching depth remains a top concern for the Cardinals, who have struggled to develop arms in their upper minor-league levels. Losing Roby is another significant blow for an organization already lacking viable rotation options. (Photo of Roby in spring training: Rich Storry / Getty Images)

Red-Hot Cardinals Pitching Prospect Placed on Injured List
Red-Hot Cardinals Pitching Prospect Placed on Injured List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis CardinalsNo. 10 prospect Tekoah Roby - who has been lights out over his last four starts - was placed on the 7-day injured list on Monday following last week's 5 2/3-inning shutout performance in which the righty struck out six. Advertisement Although the injury is unspecified, Roby's absence can be added to a long list of injuries to pitching prospects in the Cardinals organization this season. No. 5 Tink Hence and No. 2 Quinn Mathews have both missed time and No. 11 Cooper Hjerpe has been out all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 23-year-old prospect is in the midst of an excellent year on the mound, which propelled him from Double-A to Triple-A earlier in the campaign - his first promotion since before the 2023 season. Jeff Curry-Imagn ImagesJeff Curry-Imagn Images After carrying a 2.49 ERA through 10 starts with Double-A Springfield in which he struck out 57 batters in 47 innings, Roby was promoted to Triple-A Memphis on June 9. The former third-round pick got off to a slow start with the Redbirds, allowing 12 runs in his first two starts, but seems to have found his footing over the last couple weeks. Advertisement Dating back to June 22, Roby has allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings across his last four starts. In that span, the Asheville, North Carolina native has struck out 21 batters and walked just five batters, carrying a 0.86 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Despite the growing list of injuries sustained by pitchers in the Cardinals minor league system, help is on the way after the team drafted 12 college pitchers in the MLB Draft earlier this week. Springfield Cardinals take season opener
SPRINGFIELD–The Springfield Cardinals had to wait an extra 24 hours to open the 2025 AA season, but it was well worth the wait. Behind Tekoah Roby's stellar performance on the hill of five strikeouts over four scoreless innings, the Baby Birds won their first game of the season against the Wichita Windsurge, 6-2. With the Opening Day victory, Roby gets a little bit of redemption for missing a significant portion of last season due to injury. His command and arsenal was on point from the first pitch. He devestated hitters with a nasty breaking ball, that was set up by great command and location of his fastball. Roby struckout the side in the top of the third to put an exclamation point on his outing. At the plate, his teammates gave him plenty of early run support. Tallying four runs in the first three innings. Dakota Harris drove in a pair of runs, as did Jeremy Rivas. Both players helped the club put space between them and Wichita when the Cardinals scored three of their four runs in the bottom of the third. Rivas also smacked the team's first home run of the summer with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the 6th. Sunday, the Birds will host a double header. First game starts at 1pm with the second game soon to follow. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
