It's not just music - what a festival with a twist can bring to Arran

Just 500 tickets are available for the multi-stage festival that has a focus on sustainability and wellness as well as a diverse line-up of artists and performers from dub reggae, house, Italo disco, electro and acoustic music. Hosted in association with Hello?Disco Boombox, it is not your typical festival and it also has a programme that includes forest parties, beach yoga, eco-workshops, sound bathing, Indian head massages, holistic therapy, wild swimming and guided hikes but sticks with its ethos of Leave No Trace. Camping is available at the Ormidale Park & Hotel, where the event has its main event hub while there is also an acoustic spot at Wineport and the Arran Botanical Beach Bar will host the wellness stage. Read More The nearby Auchrannie's Motorhome facilities also offers shower facilities while there is plenty of other options for accommodation on the island too. Daniel Sharkey is the main organiser and his work in involving the locals of Arran has been heavily praised by Sheila Gilmore of VisitArran, who hopes the people visiting the island can enjoy everything it has to offer, including local food vendors who will be in attendance to serve up some delicacies. She said: 'We're always looking at encouraging people to come and it is something a wee bit different as well. 'There has been a lot of engagement with local businesses so from our point of view it is a win-win for everybody. 'Daniel is organised, and he's been planning it for a while so that has been really important so we're quite happy. The Arran trust is going to benefit as well so it's all good. It's all win-win for the island. 'We have lots of music festivals in Arran so this isn't the first of its kind but we're all for welcoming new events so that would be a great thing and we'd hope it would be repeated. 'It's exciting. Other festivals are more Indie music and that is great as well, but this is what it is all about, having something different. If everybody did the same thing it wouldn't work. 'They're going to have stunning settings so folk might want to extend their stay. They might go do something in the morning before the music kicks off so I think it will be good. It's also a good time of year, we're trying to expand the season and it's the beginning of September and people are thinking it might not be so busy the island so it gives people the opportunity to access other things if they want to. 'They might come on the Friday and go out and do activities on the Saturday, go do activities or climb Goatfell or whatever. There's no end of things they could want to do. There are options for everyone to enjoy our island.' The festival takes place on Arran in September (Image: Handout) For Daniel himself, also known by his DJ name Sharkey's Machine – who has also curated and created the Dance Tent at Back Doune The Rabbit Hole Festival next weekend from August 1 to 3 - he is keen to inspire festival goers to help promote the island and connect with music and nature during the weekend. He said: 'To encourage people to enjoy both music and outdoor exploration. Our goal is to inspire individuals from diverse backgrounds to connect music with nature in promoting access to natural spaces and advocating for responsible outdoor recreation. 'We do this by integrating music, art, and culture into the outdoor experience, aiming to ignite a sense of adventure and appreciation for the world around us, all in the name of inclusivity and diversity and through the value of music. 'In our quest to leave no trace we will do our own site and beach clean-up, have a no plastics use policy and a re-usable policy alongside health and wellness activities and are fully ready to onboard any interested sustainability and green brand partnerships. 'Our other goal is to put Arran, a recently included Unesco Global Geopark firmly on the global tourism map due to the introduction of the Glen Sannox vessel, we see Arran as the perfect fit and dare I say an almost tropical destination for this event.' The festival will take place near Brodick Bay and is easily accessed via ferry from Troon, Ardrossan or Claonaig. Passenger launched as a micro-clubbing concept to try and take it back to the days of intimate parties with friends, and had a successful first year with Adventures in Aviemore in 2024. The move to the islands is focused on music, mindfulness and wellness and is a family-friendly event although children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. He added: 'What makes this different is the sense of journey and adventure associated with this event – we are asking people to take a leap into the unknown with mindfulness and grace, recognising the intrinsic value of nature and the natural world and our own inter-connectedness with it. 'These are some of Passenger's core values and we are asking people to live these values and join us on the island for an unforgettable moment in time. Various ticket options are available, including early bird weekend tickets for £70, as well as individual day tickets, tickets for locals and a wellness pass. They can be bought here. Maindee Carnival adds a splash of colour to Newport

Held at Maindee Primary School, the event marked the beginning of a two-year journey under the theme 'Future Maindee,' where young people are stepping into leadership roles to shape the festival's direction. The event, which aims to bring people together, has been running since 1997. The day kicked off with the iconic carnival parade featuring stunning silk flags crafted by local groups including Age Alive, Coffee and Laughs, and Greening Maindee. The parade, led by the drummers of VB Samba, wound through Millennium Walk and across the footbridge to the Riverfront before returning for the opening ceremony, which included a performance by the Maindee School Choir. Live entertainment filled the grounds throughout the afternoon. The main stage, programmed by Newport's youth team, featured acts like Milk Slice, Bryn Geary, Bowen Barklam, and Operasonic. A secondary Youth Stage showcased dance performances and interactive sessions led by Maindee Youth Arts. The Spoken Word tent offered a platform for poets and writers from across Wales to share their voices. The Tent of Intent returned with a focus on sustainability, inviting festivalgoers to explore eco-conscious living. Food stalls, walkabout performers, and community dance spaces added to the colourful festive atmosphere. This year's festival saw young people being involved in every aspect of planning, from staging and marketing to programming and performances. As the sun set over Maindee, the message was clear: the future of Newport's cultural scene is in passionate, capable hands. Organisers of Maindee Festival thanked the National Lottery Community Fund and #NationalLottery players along with Welsh Government Local Air Quality Management Fund, Newport City Council Prosperity Fund for making this project possible. They also passed on their thanks to supporters, volunteers, performers and visitors.

'Perfect for festival' Amazon tent reduced in time for Glastonbury

Glastonbury Festival starts in a few days and this tent is said to be 'easy to put up and take down', making it ideal for summer events Amazon shoppers are flocking to buy a tent that's 'perfect' for festivals in the run-up to Glastonbury. The Amazon Basics Dome Camping Tent would usually be £56.99 but has dropped down to £39.99 in a limited time deal. Glastonbury kicks off this coming Wednesday, June 25, and for festival-goers who are yet to source their camp set-up, Amazon's next-day delivery could be a last-minute solution. The tent is water resistant with inverted seams to prevent rain from getting through. It's described as easy to put up and take down, a must for many in festival environments. It comes in a few sizes, starting with a spacious two-man tent. For those looking for something a little more spacious, the Eurohike Sendero 4 Family Tent is currently reduced from £300 to £104 with room for four people to sleep as well as having space for bags. Halfords also has a massive eight person tent, but at £185 it's not the most budget-friendly option on the market. The Amazon Basics tent has brought in over 2000 five-star ratings on the shopping giant. One shopper was thrilled with how easy it was to put together, and said: "This was so quick and easy to put up and take down, and it all fit back in the very compact bag without too much of a struggle. "In our case, it was, literally, child's work, as the 12-year olds put it up and took it down themselves, only needed help when folding it back up in the right shape to fit in the bag. (The bag is a rectangle with two handles, which is not suitable for carrying long distances.) "Four youngsters fit comfortably inside, four fully grown adults would be ok if the gear is left elsewhere. We were lucky with the weather, so we can't assess the water tightness, though it looks like it would do fine if properly assembled. "It can get hot inside in the sun, but the open mesh all around helps a lot with ventilation, and the waterproof rainfly is completely removable for complete air circulation. Good quality for money, surpassed expectations, and super quick delivery." Another was thrilled, saying: "I took this tent to the Download Festival 2022 for 5 nights camping. It was easy to put up (I had a practice run at home to make sure it was ok) and was pretty easy to pack up. "The groundsheet of the tent seemed a little thin, but no tears on this occasion. Double layer means you don't have to worry about ingress of water, which was great. "Yes, I was happy with this, surprised I didn't see another one there. The value was great." It is worth noting that some shoppers were disappointed by the insulation in the tent, with one writing: "Great cheap tent but not for any Cold nights, I used this in summer when it was 10 degrees at night and not windy and we were freezing. "Two of the side panels are mesh, so very breezy - great for a hot summer night but wouldn't advise using beyond that. If you're looking for a cheap tent for camping with friends and nothing heavy duty, then this is perfect." It does seem that those who have bought the tent with a festival in mind have been quite impressed, another shopper said: " Perfect for camping/festivals / beach, etc comes with a storage bag to store the tent in after use. "The tent has plenty of ventilation options to help prevent it from getting to warm inside so allowing you to easily create a comfortable environment inside. Overall, a very well-made four-person tent which is generous inside, provides more than enough protection against most of the elements, easy to put up and great value for money suitable for all kinds of outdoor activities." The Amazon Basics Dome Camping Tent with Rainfly and Carry Bag is now available for £39.99.

Festival and camping tent that stood 'everything thrown at it' is now £146 off

As summer rapidly approaches, festival season is just on the horizon. From the iconic fields of Glastonbury to the power-packed line-ups at Download, fortunate ticket holders across the UK are preparing for weekends filled with positive energy, live music, and hopefully, afternoons bathed in sunshine with a beverage in hand. Whether you're headbanging to heavy metal or absorbing indie tunes, one thing is certain - a robust camping setup is crucial for enduring multi-day events. Most festival-goers will require a dependable tent for their weekend abode, and while quality equipment can be pricey, outdoor brand Tiso has unveiled a fantastic deal that makes upgrading a tad easier. The Phoxx II v2 2-Person Tent is now available for £84, down from £230, offering a substantial saving of £146. Crafted with pre-angled poles for additional internal space, this sturdy tent comfortably accommodates two people and even boasts a porch area - perfect for keeping muddy boots separate from your sleeping quarters. Festival-friendly extras include internal storage pockets for easy access to essentials, lantern hanging points, and a fully waterproof groundsheet and flysheet designed to withstand typical British rain showers. Even better, pitching takes approximately seven minutes, allowing you to spend more time enjoying the music rather than struggling with tent poles. However, if you need something larger for a big group, there are plenty of options. Mountain Warehouse's 6-person design, currently £159.99 from £259.99, features a dome style with ample ventilation and flysheet doors. Otherwise, Decathlon has this inflatable option for eight people. At £999.99, it's expensive, but it's super easy to set up and has a spacious living area and three bedrooms. Festival-goers starting anew with their camping gear might want to check out Tiso's extensive array of auxiliary camping items, such as this cosy down-filled sleeping bag, now discounted to £186 from £260, and airbeds that promise a warm snuggle during chilly nights. For added comfort, shoppers might consider camping furniture. A nifty collapsible camping chair with a built-in drinks holder, a steal at only £10. Returning to the Phoxx II v2 2-Person Tent, reactions have been solid; one user enthused that the tent 'hasn't let them down yet' while another commented that it 'fits two people snugly. ' An individual shared their experience, highlighting, "Tried it last night for the first time. Easy to erect. Lightweight and compact and very well made." And for lone campers, there's good news from Tiso, who've reduced the Phoxx I v2 1-Person Tent to £70, down from £165. It has similar features, including water resistance, astute storage, and speedy setup, but it adopts a more compact tunnel shape, requiring a bit of a squeeze to enter. One reviewer remarked: "I bought this for my daughter as we're planning a bikepacking trip. Space is tight, but it feels robust, and it's light and compact enough to fit in a handlebar bag." However, not everyone was taken with it. One review stated: "Tiny! I can't sit inside (I'm just 5'3"), which makes it impractical for changing clothes and doing tick checks. It's more of a shelter/bivvy rather than a tent. It's very discreet in the wild, though."
