Nirvana performs surprise reunion set with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent
Nirvana performs surprise reunion set with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent Show Caption Hide Caption Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell and other celebs unite for LA fire victims Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stefani and a swath of other celebrities united at the FireAid concerts to raise funds for LA fire victims. No one could have expected a surprise Nirvana reunion with a rotating cast of female singers standing in for the late Kurt Cobain, but that's what fans received Thursday night with Dave Grohl behind the drums, Pat Smear on guitar and Krist Novoselic on bass. There also was a family reunion with Grohl's 18-year-old daughter, Violet, who has frequently sung with her father onstage, joining the gathering of alt-rock royalty for Nirvana's almost-ballad, 'All Apologies.' The surprise one-night-only performance was one of more than a dozen sets at Inglewood's Kia Forum during the dual FireAid benefit concerts, which raised money for recovery efforts following historic wildfires that devastated areas in and around LA County and killed at least two dozen people. The band slammed through a quartet of Nirvana songs with sometimes questionable audio, especially with St. Vincent's frantic 'Breed.' But the volume and energy never relented as Kim Gordon stormed through 'School' and Joan Jett growled during 'Territorial Pissings.' Nirvana's last performance with Cobain – who died April 5, 1994, at 27 – was a month prior in Germany. The band's last performance, which featured Gordon, Jett and Lorde, was when was Seattle grunge group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The set was part of a star-studded lineup – which also included Joni Mitchell, The Black Crowes, Stevie Nicks and the Red Hot Chili Peppers – at the Forum. Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Rod Stewart and Katy Perry were among the acts that took the stage at the nearby Intuit Dome. Every FireAid performance: Which songs Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, No Doubt and more performed The Nirvana reunion was not initially included in FireAid's lineup. This was the first time that Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, and daughter Violet have performed together since he announced the birth of a daughter outside of his 21-year marriage last fall. Grohl has been married to Jordyn Blum since August 2003, and the two largely keep their relationship private. They have three daughters together. Per organizers, funds raised "will be distributed under the advisement of the Annenberg Foundation" and "will be distributed for short-term relief efforts and long-term initiatives to prevent future fire disasters throughout Southern California." The dual benefit concerts took place just three days before the 67th annual Grammy Awards, which will take over Arena in downtown LA on Sunday. Numerous events associated with Sunday's ceremonies were canceled following Southern California's wildfires. The celebrations that have vowed to go forward, including a MusiCares concert honoring The Grateful Dead and the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala, will have a philanthropic focus aimed at first responders. Nirvana's Reunion, Dr. Dre's Cali Cameo, Lady Gaga's Show-Closer & More of the Best Photos From FireAid Benefit Concert
With a lineup of 27 legendary acts across two venues to raise money for wildfire victims and rebuilding efforts, Thursday night's FireAid benefit concert was poised to be an epic night. But what transpired at the Kia Forum and Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, turned out to be even more historic than anyone could have expected. The most unexpected part of the night came from the unannounced reunion of the surviving members of Nirvana — drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic, along with touring guitarist Pat Smear — plus a revolving door of female vocalists (lovingly dubbed 'Hervana'). They started out with St. Vincent for 'Breed,' then Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon for 'School,' followed by Joan Jett on 'Territorial Pissings,' and finally Dave's 18-year-old daughter Violet Grohl for 'All Apologies.' The performance needed (and got) no introduction, as audience members at the Forum and at home pieced together what they were witnessing in real time. Two sets later, Dr. Dre joined Anderson .Paak (as well as drummer Sheila E.) for 'Still D.R.E.' and the ever-appropriate 'California Love.' Also, Dawes welcomed Stephen Stills and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for Buffalo Springfield's 'For What It's Worth,' and Stills hung around when buddy and bandmate Graham Nash joined for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 'Teach Your Children.' John Fogerty popped up with The Black Crowes for Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain,' while Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash joined the rock band to cover Led Zeppelin's 'Going to California.' Jelly Roll welcomed Travis Barker on drums to cover Bob Seger's 'Hollywood Nights'; and Sting returned to the stage to join Stevie Wonder for 'Superstition' and 'Higher Ground,' which also included Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass. And that's just what wasn't on the stacked lineup in advance. We also got P!nk covering Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin, Lady Gaga debuting the one-night-only new song 'All I Need Is Time,' Joni Mitchell bringing the emotional weight with 'Both Sides Now' and much more. Originally appeared on E! Online Dave Grohl's family united to the tune of love. The Foo Fighters frontman took the stage with his and wife Jordyn Blum's 18-year-old daughter Violet at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles Jan. 30. In his first performance since he revealed he fathered a baby outside of his marriage, the 55-year-old was also joined by his former Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear for the first time since 2020 as they surprised the audience by performing some of the band's beloved songs, including "Breed," "School," and 'Territorial Pissings," during the Los Angeles wildfire relief fund raiser. While Dave returned to his Nirvana roots by taking his place behind the drum kit, Violet surprised the audience as she appeared on stage and performed the band's final song of the evening, 'All Apologies.' Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear Reunite for Surprise Performance at FireAid: Watch
The post Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear Reunite for Surprise Performance at FireAid: Watch appeared first on Consequence. Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear reunited at the FireAid benefit concert, where they were joined by St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, and Violet Grohl for a number of Nirvana songs. Watch clips of the performances below. The reunion was a highlight of the evening, and came as a surprise amidst the two-venue benefit show's already-stacked lineup. St. Vincent started things off, playing a rendition of 'Breed' with Novoselic on bass and Grohl on drums — marking the latter's first public musical performance since his extramarital scandal last year. Gordon was next to fill in for the late Kurt Cobain, taking center stage to perform 'School.' After her, Novoselic introduced Jett, who led a rocking version of 'Territorial Pissings.' Then, with Novoselic on accordion and Gordon on bass, Grohl's daughter, Violet, took the stage for the final song, 'All Apologies.' Last month, it was announced that she was working on her debut album, after touring with Foo Fighters for several years. Earlier this month, her dad was seen making chili for families displaced by the wildfires. FireAid was organized to raise for relief efforts in Los Angeles after the city was hit with devastating wildfires earlier this month. In addition to Nirvana's moment, there were performances by Billie Eilish, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Joni Mitchell, Anderson .Paak and Dr. Dre, Olivia Rodrigo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Nicks, P!NK, Sting, Stephen Stills, John Mayer, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Lil Baby, Gracie Abrams, Tate McRae, Katy Perry, Rod Stewart, and more. Why Dave Grohl only wants female singers to front Nirvana reunions
The charity FireAid concert played host to the closest thing the world will see to a Nirvana reunion, as the band's surviving members teamed up with a rotating cast of female rock artists for a set of songs such as 'Breed' and 'Territorial Pissings'. Held at the Inuit Dome in Inglewood, California, the event was put together in aid of those affected by the devastating California wildfires, with performances from Billie Eilish, Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dr Dre, Joni Mitchell, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder, Olivia Rodrigo, Pink and Stevie Nicks. For rock fans, the biggest surprise of the night was the unexpected reunion of Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic, with guest vocalists stepping in for the late Kurt Cobain. St Vincent growled her way through Nevermind classic 'Breed', complete with some serious guitar shredding, while Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, a longtime friend of the band, took on lead vocals for 'School'. Meanwhile, Joan Jett led a raucous rendition of 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, sang 'All Apologies' from the group's final album, In Utero. St Vincent, Jett and Gordon previously fronted the band when Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, leading to the unofficial name 'Hervana'. Nirvana reunited with female singers including Joan Jett and Kim Gordon on lead vocals (Getty) Grohl, Novoselic and Smear dissolved Nirvana following Cobain's death in 1994, but have performed together on a number of occasions. Nearly every time, a female singer (or several) has been brought on to perform the late artist's words, an idea Grohl said came to them around the Rock Hall of Fame ceremony. 'We thought, 'Wait, it has to be all women,' he told Rolling Stone at the time. 'Don't even ask anyone else. If we can fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance with these incredible women singing Nirvana songs, then we'll have achieved our own revolution.'' He added: 'It also added a whole other dimension to the show. It added substance and depth, so it didn't turn into a eulogy. It was more about the future.'
