Use tech to expand services of IRCS: Guv

1 2 3 4 Mangaluru: Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot said the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) should adopt technology by using digital platforms to expand its humanitarian services. He was speaking after inaugurating the new centenary building of the IRCS Dakshina Kannada (DK) unit at the Old DC office premises on Saturday. Suggesting the IRCS extend its services beyond the traditional approach, he insisted that there is a need for the involvement of more young volunteers in community service through the Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross units. He called upon IRCS DK members to put in efforts into making the new centenary building serve as a hub for public welfare activities. "Being a symbol of humanity and selfless service, the IRCS has upheld its ideals for decades. It has been standing as a supporting force with its humanitarian services in times of illness and crisis. The only religion before the IRCS is humanity, and it works for the welfare of society, thereby offering happiness to all," he said. Rapid urbanisation and rising health challenges increase the scope of IRCS services, he said, adding that the organisation has expanded its services to all villages and cities, offering medical care, emergency services, and promoting blood donation. As an international organisation, it has a presence in over 190 countries, he said. IRCS Karnataka has bagged the national award twice for its active involvement in humanitarian services like health initiatives and awareness campaigns. Assembly speaker UT Khader said that the DK unit of the IRCS, which has been offering dedicated service in the district for the past 70 years, has instilled humanitarian values among the young generation. He said the IRCS should continue its effective campaigns by motivating young people to donate blood. "There was a time when people had apprehensions about blood donation. The campaigns of the IRCS instilled confidence among people and made them understand that blood donation is the greatest gift one can give," he added. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, lauding the efforts of DK IRCS, said that he will extend his support to avail funds through CSR initiatives and govt schemes to expand the Red Cross Society activities in the district. "The govt may not be able to help everyone directly, but organisations like the IRCS can reach the masses," he said. A digital souvenir titled 'Samarpana' was released on the occasion. IRCS Karnataka vice-president Bhaskar Rao, IRCS Dakshina Kannada president Dr Shantharam Shetty, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath were present.

Teachers pillars of society, nation building: Governor Gehlot

Mangaluru: Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot said, "Teachers are the pillars of society, building knowledge, values, and moral principles. They not only impart knowledge to students but also provide direction, vision, and purpose to their lives. Just as a lamp burns itself to dispel darkness, teachers illuminate society by spreading the light of knowledge, values, and ideas." He was speaking during Prerana Diwas-2025, organised by the Karnataka Rajya Mahavidyalaya Shikshaka Sangha (KRMSS) in Moodbidri, on Saturday. The event was held to felicitate exemplary educators and celebrate their unwavering dedication to shaping young minds. He added that the guru-disciple tradition has been an integral part of India's cultural heritage, where teachers are revered as 'Guru Brahma' and 'Guru Vishnu'. "Whether it is ancient scholars or modern educators like Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, all have demonstrated that teachers are not only knowledge providers but also builders of society. Teachers are the architects of nation-building," he said. "In today's society, surrounded by moral crises, technological changes, and global challenges, teachers are the foundation for innovation, wisdom, and ethics. In the current era of technological revolution, artificial intelligence, and global competition, the role of teachers has become even more crucial. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 30 Remarkable Women from 80–100 Years in the Past Undo Their dedication and innovation inspire countless individuals. Mangaluru: Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot will inaugurate the new centenary building of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Dakshina Kannada unit at the old DC office premises, here on July 26. IRCS district president Shantharam Shetty told reporters here on Tuesday that the new 20,000 sqft building, built at a cost of Rs six crore, comprises a basement, ground floor, and two upper floors. The ground floor has an office, visitor's lounge, and a meeting hall, an AC conference hall with a capacity of 300 seats, has been set up on the first floor. A conference hall with a sea view has been set up on the second floor with a seating capacity of 500 people, he said. "Though the foundation stone for the centenary building was laid on 26 cents of land in 2021, the work could not be expedited due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors. The building was completed utilising the CSR funds, contributions from donors, and support from the state govt," said Shetty. The Red Cross office, which operated from a small room in the DC's office, was allocated a dedicated office space in 2007. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Later, the IRCS unit built its own facility in 2011. The DK unit of IRCS has plans to supply free blood to BPL patients being treated at private hospitals. Shetty said there is a need to create a dedicated fund for the project. Efforts in this regard will continue after the new building is made fully operational, he said. The unit also plans to establish an eye bank or a dialysis unit with support from CSR funds and other grants. A disaster management unit will be set up on the ground floor, to train volunteers and stock materials required for rescue operations. The conference halls will be given for programmes organised by NGOs and other organisations on days when there are no IRCS activities, he added. Shetty announced that a mobile application is being developed by a private company for the IRCS Dakshina Kannada unit. The app will be launched during the inauguration.
