Micheál Donoghue and his complicated Dublin affair

Micheál Donoghue and Dublin. Let's just start by saying it's complicated. With them, he has caused Galway heartache and against them he has suffered the same. The first cut was the deepest in Sunday's corresponding fixture six years ago when Dublin sent Donoghue and Galway out of the championship at the provincial stage. Four-point victors in Parnell Park, there was some vindication for Dublin's Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry boss Mattie Kenny who had been overlooked as head of the Tribes. The defeat turned out to be the final game of Donoghue's first reign in Galway as differences with some elements of the county board could not be resolved and he stepped down in August 2019 having only agreed a two-year extension four months previously. The same month three years later, he succeeded Kenny in Dublin and in both championship meetings that followed Galway were unable to beat his boys in blue, a draw in the final round of the 2023 Leinster campaign before an infamous clash in Salthill last year. Sunday is almost a year to the day Donoghue not only masterminded the downfall on his own on their own sod and served them the shortest of summers but remonstrated to have his 2017 All-Ireland winning captain David Burke sent off for a foul on Fergal Whitely. Burke's dismissal was a key factor for then Galway manager Henry Shefflin who afterwards mentioned Donoghue's reaction to the incident. 'When you have the opposing manager as well in the linesman's ear telling him that it should be a red card, I think the linesmen and the officials need to support each other.' What Donoghue did that day enraged Joe Canning. 'Seeing Micheál in a Dublin tracksuit the day they dumped us from the 2024 championship just ran against the grain for me,' he revealed in his autobiography My Story last year with Vincent Hogan. 'And it's probably no secret that the immediate reaction of Dublin's management to that 16th-minute collision probably didn't help Burkey's case when the referee subsequently went to his linesman.' Burke, Canning says, took a lot more of a philosophical approach to Donoghue going to 'The Big Smoke' but he couldn't accept it. 'Hand on heart, the idea of Micheál Donoghue managing a Leinster opponent just didn't sit well with me from the moment he was announced as Dublin's new boss.' The 2017 hurler of the year continued: "I said as much at the time in texts I sent to himself and selectors Franny Forde and Noel Larkin. Not the most gracious sentiment, I accept, but I didn't like it. I still don't.' Canning has mentioned since that Donoghue reached out to Burke upon returning to the Galway position. Clearing the air was important in convincing the elder statesman to stay around for another season. But what say or think the Dublin hurlers of Donoghue after he left them with a year to run in his term? Maybe not as entrenched as Canning was about leaving Galway but soon after his exit last August, captain Chris Crummey said: "There wasn't much communication and I think most inter-county teams are like that. 'You sort of have four or five weeks where players go on holidays, management go on holidays and you take stock. We haven't been around each other so obviously we wouldn't have known, but it's very disappointing.' Naturally, there are those among them who accept he couldn't say no when it became apparent there was more than a chance of him returning to Galway and with more favourable terms than before. But there are those who also harbour the sense that he jacked them in for a better offer having made obvious strides the past couple of seasons. It's an intriguing tale to what is effectively a Leinster semi-final. Donoghue may have the skinny on Dublin but Dublin have the venue and perhaps an air of vengeance too.

Wetherspoons to make huge menu change from today with three items axed

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WETHERSPOONS is shaking up its menu today – and fans of steaks and grills won't be happy. From Wednesday, May 14, the pub giant will be ditching three major dishes – steaks, mixed grills and gammon – in a shock menu overhaul. The move comes as bosses aim to freshen up the food offering and cut back on items branded 'loss-makers' after meat prices shot up. In an email sent to staff, Wetherspoons chief John Huston confirmed that the meats were being ditched 'after much debate', as part of a planned menu change. But in their place comes a 'mouthwatering' new selection, with Wetherspoons confident customers will lap it up. Here's what you can expect from today. What's being axed? From May 14, the following dishes will vanish from menus nationwide: All steaks Mixed grills Gammon The dishes have long been Wetherspoons staples, but have reportedly become too expensive to keep serving. What's new on the menu? In their place, a gourmet burger trio will land on plates across the UK – and it's not your average pub grub. The Big Smoke – Pulled BBQ beef brisket, American-style cheese and maple-cured bacon. Buffalo Burger – Fried buttermilk chicken breast with blue cheese, naga chilli sauce and melted cheese. Cheese Meltdown – American cheese layered with gooey Emmental and Cheddar cheese sauce. Prince William visits a J D Wetherspoons pub Each one will be built around a new 6oz patty, which becomes the new standard burger size going forward. Other Wetherspoons news Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink. There are also veggie options available, which is served between 8am and midday. Meanwhile tea and toast, which comes with two slices and either jam or marmalade, is just £2.49. It's not been all good news for Wetherspoons punters in recent months though. The pub chain exclusively revealed to The Sun in January it had increased the price of a host of drinks and meal deals by up to 30p. The chain hiked prices on drinks by 15p while meal deals were bumped up by 30p. The price rises saw the cost of a Guinness at the London and South Western branch in south west London go from £4.66 to £4.81. Meanwhile, the price of a Strongbow increased from £3.24 to £3.39.
