Emma Watson Makes Rare Appearance for 2025 Cannes Film Festival

The Harry Potter actress made her return to the 2025 Cannes Film Festival after a 12-year absence, putting her chic festival style on display as she arrived at the Nice Airport May 20. Emma wore a floral skirt, black sweater and dark sunglasses paired with black flats as she hopped off the plane. She later traded in the look for another spring ensemble while at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, donning a sleeveless red and white checker print dress and a pair of boots. Keeping the Parisian sun out of her eyes, Emma rocked a pair of aviator style sunglasses. For her last appearance at the festival in 2013, Emma showcased her style in pieces by Louis Vuitton and Chanel as she promoted the Sofia Coppola film, The Bling Ring. Aside from occasional film appearance including in 2019's Little Women, Emma—who is dating —has maintained a life out of the spotlight as works to obtain her master's degree in literature from Oxford University. Emma—who graduated from Brown University in 2014—made it clear that she's happy with her decision to fall back from the public eye and acting after years of being into the spotlight. 'I get a front row seat [with] some of the most successful, beautiful, incredible people in the world,' she explained to British Vogue in 2023. Emma Watson made a stylish arrival in Nice, France, yesterday, and continued showing off her chic summer wardrobe this afternoon in Cannes. The actress was photographed wearing a flowing red gingham dress with tan boots while having lunch at Bièrerie by Brasserie Du Casino. The Cannes Film Festival is ongoing, with its closing ceremony set for Saturday, May 24. Watson did not reveal which event or red carpet premiere she will be attending, but her return to the French festival event marks her first industry event of the year. Watson was last seen out at an NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Valentine's Day. She attended the Cannes Film Festival once before in 2013 for the premiere of The Bling Ring. Watson has been working on her master's degree at Oxford University. In December 2023, the star spoke about her choice to step away from acting to focus on academics. 'Because I'm in a career that moves very quickly, the decision to take time to do these things felt like a very big decision,' she said. '[Choosing] to go back and write and study and get behind the camera was terrifying for me because I'd never done it before. I had always been in front of the camera; I'd always been an actor.' She has no regrets though: 'I'm just so glad that I did [step away from acting] because I have this feeling of having my own voice and creative space and sovereignty in some way that I don't think I did before—more autonomy,' she said. 'I'm so glad that I allowed things to be messy for a minute and to really allow myself to not know [what's next], because the knowing that I've come to, I wouldn't trade that for anything.'

The British actress was photographed arriving at Nice Airport today, wearing a black cardigan with a white floral lace skirt. She finished the look off with black ballet flats. Watson is a Cannes Film Festival veteran, having first attended in 2013 for The Bling Ring: But her arrival today marks a rare appearance from the star, who has been pursuing a master's degree at Oxford University. Watson was last seen at a 2025 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on February 14 in Oakland, California. She was there supporting her friend, musician Tucker Halpern. A source told People that Watson was 'very low-key' and looked 'excited to be there.' In December 2023, Watson spoke to British Vogue about taking time away from acting. 'Going into my 30s, I was in this moment of real change and [thinking] 'What is going on?'' she said. 'And it was someone else who said to me, 'Oh, this is normal. You're going through your Saturn return.' [I was] like, 'What is that and why has no one warned me?!' I've spoken to so many women and so many of my friends who said, 'Oh, yeah, between 28 and, like, 30, 31, 32, that kind of age, everything shifted.' ' Watson decided to go back to school.
