I'm a TV critic – here's 7 shows I'm bingeing in June
Does anyone else feel it's very quiet for TV at the moment? As Metro's TV Editor and an avid binge-watcher in my spare time, I've been poring over Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the other streaming platforms, desperately trying to find something new that'll grab my attention. In the absence of a show like Celebrity Big Brother consuming the daily rhetoric for several weeks in a row, I've been waiting patiently… and now, some of the biggest releases of the year are finally coming this month. So, June, what do you have in store for us? There are seven shows in particular that are on my to-watch list, including the final season of Squid Game and a sizzling period drama that seems to be flying under the radar. There's also a brand new thriller coming soon that I hope will have me on the edge of my seat, and the latest season of the TV show that single-handedly made me up my omelette-making game. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. It's looking like an exciting month for TV – let's see if you'd agree with my go-to binge-watches in the coming weeks this June. First up is a new golf comedy series that's giving Ted Lasso merged with Happy Gilmore, a combination that has me grinning from ear to ear. And to top it all off, Owen Wilson leads the cast, alongside acting legends Judy Greer and Marc Maron. What more could you want? In an age where the news can often send me into a spiral of despair, I need a bit of levity and hopefulness on TV, and I'm hoping Stick will provide that solace. Stick premieres on Wednesday June 4 on Apple TV Plus. Even though we Bridgerton fans were fed this year with a little taste of what's to come in season four, I'm still very much feeling the period drama void in my life. Especially after My Lady Jane's unceremonious axe from Amazon Prime Video last year. Enter: the highly-anticipated second season of The Buccaneers, a show that champions female empowerment within both romance and friendship. The trailer for season two sent shivers down my spine with an orchestral version of Chappell Roan's Good Luck Babe playing in the background, and the promise of even more love, lust, sisterhood, queer celebration and the addition of Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in the cast. Say no more. The Buccaneers season 2 premieres Wednesday June 18 on Apple TV Plus. Squid Game is actually coming to an end this month, and I'm still not quite sure how we're all going to process our emotions by the time we watch the finale. The second season ended on a massive cliffhanger, following a bloodbath battle between the players and the soldiers after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) embarked on his dangerous mission to bring the lethal game down from the inside. How will the story draw to a close? With plenty of gore, that's for sure. But more importantly, reminding the audience once again about the way that class struggles dictate the world we live in. Squid Game season 3 launches on Friday June 27 on Netflix. Apple TV Plus has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with critically-acclaimed releases including the likes of The Morning Show, Severance, Foundation, Slow Horses, Pachinko, Silo and many more. Smoke, starring acting chameleon Taron Egerton, is joining the roster this month, following an arson investigator and a detective who team up to try to apprehend two serial arsonists. But, in the trailer that's garnered 4.5 million views in five days, it's revealed that even Taron's lead character is under suspicion… or could at least have a secret hidden up his sleeve. Created by the writer behind Black Bird (Dennis Lehane), I'm already hooked. Smoke premieres on Friday June 27 on Apple TV Plus. As a bookworm, I often love to have read the book that a film or TV show is based on before watching it. In the case of We Were Liars, I'm glad I haven't. Coming to Amazon Prime Video soon, the show is described as a psychological thriller, in which an accident occurs one summer among a group of friends that changes the course of their lives. I'm being wary of how much I Google for fear of spoilers. One comment on YouTube underneath the teaser even says: 'The twist at the end is insane, anybody who's never read the book or didn't read the plot on Wikipedia, you're in for a treat.' I'm ready to have my mind blown. We Were Liars premieres on Wednesday June 18 on Amazon Prime Video. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A little while ago, I was lucky enough to go to a Disney Plus event, where they served us the famous omelette from The Bear, complete with Boursin down the middle and crisps sprinkled on top. It was, quite frankly, the best omelette I've ever eaten in my life. Fortunately, that's not the only good thing about The Bear. It's a phenomenal show, one teeming with chaos that's promising to grow even more in season four. Amid the feelings of anxiety and stress that watching The Bear can induce, it's a drama that at its core is full of heart, passion, and a sense of community that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Even if I couldn't handle the heat of Carmy's kitchen, I'll be tuning in. The Bear season 4 launches on Thursday June 26 on Disney Plus. It's been three years since Dominique Thorne made her debut as Riri Williams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blasting onto the scene in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a teenage genius with brains to rival Tony Stark. More Trending She's finally returning in her very own eponymous series, Ironheart, and I can't wait to see what the young superhero does when given the opportunity to spread her wings. The era of the Young Avengers, which could see Riri join forces with Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop, Joe Locke's Wiccan, and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, to name a few. No one can dull my excitement about what the MCU could bring in the near future. View More » Ironheart premieres on Wednesday June 25 on Disney Plus. Got a story? 'The Buccaneers' season 2 trailer is here to tease romance and new characters
Even more sweet sisterhood, steamy love affairs and spectacular landscapes are soon to come with the return of "The Buccaneers." The Apple TV Plus period drama-comedy will debut its second season on June 18, with one new episode dropping on the streaming service every Wednesday through August 6. And fans now have a much-anticipated early look with the season's first official trailer, teasing more 1870s London drama set to Chappell Roan's present-day "Good Luck Babe." On May 22, Apple TV Plus released a fresh two-minute trailer that kicks off with Nan St. George (Kristine Froseth) navigating her new marriage to Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) all while still seemingly harboring feelings for Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome). 'I really want to make this version of my life work. I have to let Guy go," she can be heard declaring in the new clip. Speaking of Guy, we see him and Jinny St. George (Imogen Waterhouse) arriving somewhere warm, sunny and decidedly un-England-y. "It's been months since Jinny and I left England," Broome's character can be heard in the trailer. "Everything has changed, except the way I feel." Needless to stay, the drama between Nan and Guy is far from over. Check out the full trailer below: The logline for season 2 promises a new chapter for the young American Buccaneers, one packed with "sisterhood, romance, wit, steamy love affairs, extravagant gowns, spectacular landscapes and jaw-dropping plot-twists. " Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'Now the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders — England is their home. In fact, they're practically running the place,' the synopsis reads. 'Nan is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country. Conchita is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine to a wave of young American heiresses. And Jinny is on every front page, wanted for the kidnapping of her unborn child. "All of the girls have been forced to grow up and now have to fight to be heard, as they wrestle with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths … themes consuming all women of any age, no matter what year it is. Last time we got a taste of England. This time we're in for a veritable feast.' Along with returning cast members, including Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Aubri Ibrag, Josie Totah, Imogen Waterhouse, Mia Threapleton and Emmy Award nominee Christina Hendricks, the sophomore installment will welcome several new faces to the ensemble, including Greg Wise, Jacob Ifan, Grace Ambrose, Maria Almeida and, notably, "Gossip Girl" favorite Leighton Meester, who pops up in the final moments of the new trailer. We're very ready for all of the stylish Victorian shenanigans yet to come. Tom's Guide will keep you posted on all things related to the second season of "The Buccaneers", including casting intel, new teaser clips, plot details and more.
