Nancy Mace launches South Carolina governor bid

Rep. Nancy Mace (R) launched her run for South Carolina governor early Monday, joining a crowded Republican primary field to succeed Gov. Henry McMaster (R-S.C.). Mace made her official announcement at her alma mater, The Citadel, a senior military college, on Monday. The congresswoman was the first woman to graduate from the college in 1999. 'This morning I am making it official. I am running to be your governor of the great state of South Carolina,' Mace said, speaking from the school. 'I didn't come to join the club. They don't want me and I don't want them. I came to hold the line.' 'South Carolina is tired of the politicians who smile for the cameras, lie to your face, and then vanish when it's time to lead,' she said. On Sunday, Mace posted a video that concludes with a graphic that reads 'Nancy Mace For Governor.' 'Do you like our X header?' she asked in a post on the social media site with the same image. The firebrand South Carolina congresswoman had teased a potential run in recent days. Last Monday, she released a video highlighting the governor's race and President Trump's praise for her. The video included the caption 'Coming soon.' According to Fox News, Mace told a crowd at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics over the previous weekend that 'not only do you pick presidents, maybe you can pick the next South Carolina governor too while we're here today, because we're going to be announcing a run very shortly potentially for that as well.' Mace joins fellow Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), state Attorney General Alan Wilson (R), state Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and state Sen. Josh Kimbrell (R) in the primary. Mace told Fox News that if she launched a gubernatorial bid, it would be a 'two-man race' between her and Wilson. 'If I get in, I will fight to the finish, and I will take out South Carolina's attorney general, because he's turned a blind eye on women and on children and on the state for a lot of reasons. He might force me to do this,' Mace said. The congresswoman accused four men of sexual misconduct in a speech on the House floor earlier this year and accused Wilson of not prosecuting the men. Wilson has denied Mace's accusations, saying they were not made to him or his office. A poll released by the South Carolina Policy Council showed Mace narrowly leading Wilson in the primary among Republican identifying voters. Nancy Mace launches South Carolina governor bid

Republican firebrand Nancy Mace has launched a bid to become South Carolina's next governor on a platform reminiscent of President Donald Trump 's. And she's not shying away from her reputation in Congress as a pain-in-the-side rabble rouser while pushing pro-Trump policies. During her four and a half years in office, Mace, 47, established herself from the pack of Republican women due to her many antics in Congress. At first, she appeared to be a moderate, eager to work on bipartisan work. Now she's campaigning on how she ruffles feathers on both sides of the aisle. 'I'm running to put South Carolina first,' Rep. Nancy Mace said. During her campaign announcement at her alma mater The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, South Carolina, she ripped into 'weak leadership' of the past. She pledged to no longer 'turn a blind eye' to 'trannies invading women's spaces, an unaccountable judicial process and failed schools.' Her top priorities are to restore law and order, protect women and children and fix the judicial system. And she's not backing away from her controversial reputation that she earned in the House of Representatives as she joins an already-crowded pack to replace outgoing Gov. Henry McMaster. She also had some new proposals: The Republican unveiled a five-year plan to eliminate state income taxes. 'Other states, like Florida , Tennessee , Texas , have zero state income tax,' she said. Mace also announced initiatives to expand school choice, vocational education and floated policies that could help the state's authorities better cooperate with ICE to accelerate deportations. Before she took the stage at The Citadel, a Trump-inspired playlist of MAGA rally favorites like the Village People's YMCA and Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless the USA' blared out. Mace allies donning a mix of suits, golf polos, sandals and Lilly Pulitzer highlighter-colored dresses bobbed along in the crowd. She's proved to be a conservative rabble-rouser since her election to Congress in 2021. Mace was one of eight GOP lawmakers to vote to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has crusaded through Capitol Hill vowing to protect women in the name of restricting transgender rights. Mace has been increasingly at odds with the trans community in recent years. Once, she even barged into a Capitol restroom along with Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., to investigate whether the patron was actually a woman. (Turns out she was). She has even been confronted by members of the trans community at her town halls and political events. 'Tranny, tranny, tranny. I don't really care. You want [expletive] in women's bathrooms and I'm not going to have it. No, thank you,' Mace fumed during a House Oversight Committee hearing in February about USAID funding to LGBT initiatives globally. In February, Mace spoke on the House floor for an hour about her ex-fiancé whom she stunningly accused of being involved in sexual crimes. State police in South Carolina later opened an investigation into Mace's stunning claims that she uncovered a [expletive] and sexual trafficking ring after sifting through digital information on her ex-fiance's phone . During her remarks, which had some extra legal protections because she gave them from the House floor, Mace slammed South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, her opponent in the state's governor race, for failing to investigate the matter. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed the probe into the matter one day after the extraordinary speech, where she identified four men she said were 'predators' and said she had uncovered video of herself being [expletive]. Mace's stunning House floor speech and threat to go 'scorched earth' against people she called predators has since kicked off a series of legal action. Mace in a statement called herself a 'key witness for victims,' alleges she faces a 'smear campaign,' and accuses a former advisor of 'flagrant dishonesty.' She calls herself a 'key cooperating witness.' Mace's er ex-fiancé filed legal action against the Republican in return.

Nancy Mace launches campaign for South Carolina governor

US Rep. Nancy Mace is aiming high, officially throwing her hat in the ring for the South Carolina 2026 gubernatorial race to succeed term-limited incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster (R). Mace (R-SC) announced her campaign Monday after weeks of sending strong signals that she intended to vie for her state's governor's mansion, vowing to usher in the state's 'Golden Age.' Her formal campaign launch is set to take place at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where she graduated in 1999 as the first female graduate from its Corps of Cadets. Following her formal campaign debut, Mace is set to embark on what she has billed the 'Mother of ALL Town Halls Tour,' starting in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, kicking off her barnstorming of the state. Advertisement The three-term congresswoman has served in the House since 2021, where she quickly rose to national prominence and made a name for herself as one of the more outspoken members of the Republican Party. 3 Rep. Nancy Mace has been teasing a gubernatorial run for weeks. AP 3 Nancy Mace is set to formally debut her gubernatorial campaign at The Citadel. Citadel Military College of South Carolina Advertisement The South Carolina rep previously served in the state house from 2018–2020, after unsuccessfully challenging Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) during his 2014 reelection bid. She now faces a growing field of candidates on the Republican side, including fellow Rep. Ralph Norman, state Sen. Josh Kimbrell, state Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. Mace has already traded barbs with some of her competitors, namely Wilson, whom she publicly accused of ignoring evidence she presented alleging she suffered sexual abuse from her ex-fiance and others. Wilson has called those claims 'categorically false,' and Mace is facing a defamation suit over the accusations. Advertisement Some polling has pegged Mace as the frontrunner, but indicates that many South Carolinians do not have their minds made up yet. A Targoz Market Research poll, for example, found Mace with a slight lead, but also found over half of GOP primary voters were undecided. 3 Rep. Nancy Mace has worked to bury the hatchet with President Trump. AP Looming over the race will likely be whether President Trump makes a formal endorsement. At the start of her tenure in Congress, Mace criticized Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, though she later voted against impeaching him. This prompted Trump to endorse former South Carolina Rep. Katie Arrington (R) during the 2022 midterm elections. Advertisement Last year, Mace endorsed Trump over her former home state Gov. Nikki Haley in the 2024 presidential primary. Notably, her fellow congressional foe, Norman, backed Haley and was the only sitting House Republican besides Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) to do so. Over recent years, Mace has drawn national attention for wading into the culture wars. Last year, for example, she crusaded to ensure that women's facilities would be restricted to biological women after the election of Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), the first openly transgender member of the House. Back in 2023, she shocked observers by joining with a band of seven other hardcore conservatives led by former firebrand Rep. Matt Gaetz to oust then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) South Carolina is largely a Republican stronghold state, meaning the winner of the GOP primary is heavily favored to win the general election.

South Carolina congresswoman to make 'special announcement' in Charleston on Monday

Congresswoman Nancy Mace will be at her alma mater in Charleston on August 4 to make a "special announcement." Mace was the first woman to graduate from The Citadel in 1999. Mace's team sent out a press release teasing an upcoming announcement at The Capers Hall Courtyard at The Citadel. The first district congresswoman has hinted at a gubernatorial run numerous times on social media and in speeches, but she has not formally announced her bid. Mace said in the past that she may be forced to enter the gubernatorial race because South Carolina is not doing enough to protect women. "I see how weak our laws are in South Carolina that do nothing to protect women," Mace said at a Greenville County bond hearing. "I may be forced to run for governor because of these kinds of issues, because none of our statewide leaders are doing anything to protect us." Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman hint at upcoming announcements on state's future Mace's political career started in the South Carolina House of Representatives when she won a special election in 2017 to fill Rep. James Merrill's seat (R-District 99). She won the 2018 general election months later for the same seat, before turning her focus on the state's District 1 congressional seat. She has represented the first congressional district since her election in 2020, winning reelection in the subsequent two elections. "South Carolina continues to face the same challenges as we have for decades with no end in sight," a press release about Mace's upcoming announcement stated. "Congresswoman Mace is considering a decision she never anticipated, but one she knows is necessary for the future of South Carolina." The South Carolina Policy Council released its summer poll on July 28, which put Mace as the top contender in the 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary. According to a survey of Republican-identifying voters, 16% said they would vote for Mace in the governor's race. The candidate with the second-highest percent of voter support was Attorney General Alan Wilson with 15%. Other candidates in the race include Lieutenant Gov. Pamela Evette, State Sen. Josh Kimbrell (R-Spartanburg), and Fifth District Congressman Ralph Norman. Mace's event is open to the public, and registration is free on Humanitix.
