Bronwyn Tanner – Tuning In: Helping people and animals in need

We have just finished July…How is that possible? Wow, time has flown. Schools are back for the third term and Grade 12 learners will be making preparations for trials, which can be a stressful time for all concerned. Founder Tracy Klokie, together with Shemane Taylor and Lauren Giani, visited the SPCA to deliver a car load of love from the Winter Woofs & Whiskers Drive. They collected nearly a ton of supplies, including dog and cat food, kitty litter and blankets. Every donation has made a difference to tails that wag and whiskers that purr. There was a recent delivery of clothes, baby bundles and women's needs and comfort packs to GJ Crookes Hospital. They received the goods from Rachel Anderson and Karen Davy of Osisibathemba, Pennington. Osisibethemba (sisters of hope) works with the rape crisis centre at the hospital in Scottburgh to bless the less fortunate. They meet at Relton Hall on the first Thursday of every month. Donations are welcome, contact 076 2974457 or 083 3108479. The Hope Fundraising Festival, brought to the people of the South Coast by District 49 Child & Youth Care Centre supported by Lightness Productions, will light up the Blue Marlin All Inclusive Seascape in Scottburgh on October 4. Under the banner 'We care through love and protection', this community celebration seeks to rally families, businesses and volunteers for an afternoon of sport, music and joyful giving, all to secure vital funds for children who have endured abuse, neglect or abandonment. More details will be revealed in time for this fundraiser. TC Robertson Nature Reserve has a wish list that includes old car tyres for the playground, 20 litres of enamel white paint, indigenous plants for the memorial garden, 420g empty tin cans and wild bird seed. Your support would be greatly appreciated if you are able to contribute any of the items on the list. Contact 082 6227699. "But we really have been taken aback at the response, with over 2,000 wristbands snapped up already and superb interest from the hospitality industry in general. The Gardener (Image: Supplied) "Make a day of it, head into the city and stay overnight or get the last train home – you have 10 days to enjoy the very best of the city's cocktail scene. "You can hop from bar to bar or find your favourite and settle in – and enjoy the signature serves at the special member price, with a wide selection of cocktails across the many bars and restaurants on offer." Wristbands are on sale for £9.95, plus a £1.95 booking fee, at with the pass allowing access to discounted cocktails and mocktails at all participating venues. Alchemist Glasgow (Image: Supplied) Alice added: "This is all about good times and glitz of course, but there's a much more serious element which is many hospitality spots are really struggling to keep the doors open. "Our events around the UK have had massive impact on trade long term as people fall in love with new places through visiting with us. 'That's the real win here – yes it's fun bar hopping but people have told us they were faced with possible closure until our events helped them turn it around. "So you're not just having a good time – you're helping people keep their dream alive."

I love how they generally include gay storylines in most of their productions.' All eight episodes of Olympo have arrived on Netflix (Picture: Netflix, Inc./Matias Uris. All Rights Reserved) The Spanish drama series follows the events at a sports academy and the extreme lengths its athletes push themselves to (Picture: MATíAS URIS/NETFLIX) BringAltoidSousBack added: 'Spain really does make the best 'teen drama' shows. I also love that no one on those shows looks like a teenager (a point they made fun of in the final season of elite).' It comes after another Spanish title based on a spine-chilling true story caused waves on Netflix. A Widow's Game was released on the streaming platform in May and quickly made its way to the top of the movie charts in the UK. The Spanish-language thriller, starring Ivana Baquero, Tristán Ulloa, and Carmen Machi, follows the investigation into the slaying of engineer Antonio Navarro Cerdán (Álex Gadea). As police dig further into the matter, led by veteran homicide detective Eva (Machi), his widow's perfect façade is shattered, exposing a hidden double life. In May, Spanish series A Widow's Game shot into the Netflix charts (Picture: MANUEL FERNANDEZ VALDES/NETFLIX) Thriller series The Gardener also took Netflix viewers by storm (Picture: JAIME OLMEDO/NETFLIX) A month prior, Spanish series The Gardener also shot up the Netflix charts. Created by Miguel Sáez Carral, The Gardener follows a gardener named Elmer (Álvaro Rico), but he is not your typical horticulturalist. Elmer isn't your typical horticulturist, though. Under the strict guidance of his controlling mother, La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez), the pair run a successful garden centre and murder-for-hire business. Alcoa Mandurah Arts Gallery gets another three years

Alcoa's Pinjarra Alumina Refinery has announced a three-year partnership with the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. The Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery houses two spaces showcasing both emerging and established artists as well as touring exhibitions. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Pinjarra Alumina Refinery manager Jodie Giraudo said Alcoa was proud to support local artists to present and promote their creative talents through the gallery which is a vibrant local arts community. 'Alcoa's funding not only offers enriching art experiences for everyone to enjoy, it also provides educational opportunities and community engagement programs for the region,' Ms Giraudo said. Local landscape and botanical artist Robyn Lowry has her collection of floral artwork on show as part of the gallery's Plein Air Artist of the Month program. New Netflix show watched more than 12,000,000 times in a week

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Netflix fans can't get enough of a new thriller series that's being compared to the (mostly) beloved crime drama Dexter. Created by Miguel Sáez Carral, The Gardener – which is currently number one on the streaming platform's top 10 chart for non-English shows around the world – follows a gardener named Elmer (Álvaro Rico). Elmer isn't your typical horticulturist, though. He's actually a deadly assassin, with less of a green thumb and more of a red one. Under the strict guidance of his controlling mother, La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez), the pair run a successful garden centre and murder-for-hire business. Things are complicated, however, when the usually emotionless Elmer falls in love with his next target, the kindly teacher Violeta (Catalina Sopelana). Despite only premiering on Netflix a few weeks ago, the show has been watched by more than 19million people so far and 12.3million just this week. Last week, it was third on the top 10 chart in the US, alongside international hits like Adolescence, Black Mirror season seven, and Pulse. Fans online have been spreading the love for the Spanish-language show like a careful gardener spreading compost on their favourite flowers. @jasmineci_ wrote on X: 'The Gardener on Netflix 10/10. I love a good murder romance,' while @tmrtalks added: 'The Gardener on Netflix is so good!' It was @gab_div who perhaps had the highest praise for the show, telling her followers: 'Ok…#TheGardener ended in a way I did not expect 😂…Netflix is really 'the goat' streaming service.' Others were keen to point out the similarities to Dexter. @Bella1L1 wrote: '#TheGardener is like a twisted Spanish Dexter—but with a manipulative mom instead of a moral dad. La China doesn't manage Elmer's darkness, she nurtures it.' The Gardener – 12,300,000 views The Glass Dome – 9,200,000 Resident Playbook – 2,800,000 When Life Gives You Tangerines – 2,700,000 How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast): Season 4 – 1,800,000 Weak Hero: Class 1 – 1,800,000 Karma – 1,700,000 Kian's Bizarre B&B: Season 1 – 1,400,000 The Lady's Companion: Season 1 – 1,300,000 Project UFO – 1,100,000 Over on Reddit, however, viewers weren't quite as enthusiastic about Elmer's misadventures. While some, like lilsmallpuf, thought the 'The show was well made', more than a few were disappointed with The Gardener, with at least one fan (although they'd probably object to us using that word) saying it was like a 'fake' Dexter. The main complaint seemed to be that it's derivative of better TV series and that even when it was in full bloom, it was only ever okay. However, not everyone was as keen to pour weedkiller on Sáez Carral's work. Appropriate-Dog-525 wrote on the Netflix section of Reddit that while it was 'a little Dexterish,' they gave it a chance and enjoyed it enough to want a second season. Sadly, that seems unlikely. The Gardener was conceived as a limited series with no plans for a follow-up. Still, there are more than a few 'limited series' that got a second run after a popular first season – I'm looking at you, Shogun, The White Lotus, Good Omens, and The Flight Attendant. Online, there's definitely demand for another Elmer adventure with @QueenT_20 writing on X: 'Damn I need a Season 2 of The Gardener ASAP! More Trending @OldKatalyst meanwhile tagged Netflix on their socials to let them know, 'We need season 2 of The Gardener.' Only time will tell whether The Gardener blooms into a bigger franchise. The Gardener is available to stream now on Netflix. View More » A version of this article was published on April 16, 2025. Got a story?
