New Netflix show watched more than 12,000,000 times in a week

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Netflix fans can't get enough of a new thriller series that's being compared to the (mostly) beloved crime drama Dexter. Created by Miguel Sáez Carral, The Gardener – which is currently number one on the streaming platform's top 10 chart for non-English shows around the world – follows a gardener named Elmer (Álvaro Rico). Elmer isn't your typical horticulturist, though. He's actually a deadly assassin, with less of a green thumb and more of a red one. Under the strict guidance of his controlling mother, La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez), the pair run a successful garden centre and murder-for-hire business. Things are complicated, however, when the usually emotionless Elmer falls in love with his next target, the kindly teacher Violeta (Catalina Sopelana). Despite only premiering on Netflix a few weeks ago, the show has been watched by more than 19million people so far and 12.3million just this week. Last week, it was third on the top 10 chart in the US, alongside international hits like Adolescence, Black Mirror season seven, and Pulse. Fans online have been spreading the love for the Spanish-language show like a careful gardener spreading compost on their favourite flowers. @jasmineci_ wrote on X: 'The Gardener on Netflix 10/10. I love a good murder romance,' while @tmrtalks added: 'The Gardener on Netflix is so good!' It was @gab_div who perhaps had the highest praise for the show, telling her followers: 'Ok…#TheGardener ended in a way I did not expect 😂…Netflix is really 'the goat' streaming service.' Others were keen to point out the similarities to Dexter. @Bella1L1 wrote: '#TheGardener is like a twisted Spanish Dexter—but with a manipulative mom instead of a moral dad. La China doesn't manage Elmer's darkness, she nurtures it.' The Gardener – 12,300,000 views The Glass Dome – 9,200,000 Resident Playbook – 2,800,000 When Life Gives You Tangerines – 2,700,000 How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast): Season 4 – 1,800,000 Weak Hero: Class 1 – 1,800,000 Karma – 1,700,000 Kian's Bizarre B&B: Season 1 – 1,400,000 The Lady's Companion: Season 1 – 1,300,000 Project UFO – 1,100,000 Over on Reddit, however, viewers weren't quite as enthusiastic about Elmer's misadventures. While some, like lilsmallpuf, thought the 'The show was well made', more than a few were disappointed with The Gardener, with at least one fan (although they'd probably object to us using that word) saying it was like a 'fake' Dexter. The main complaint seemed to be that it's derivative of better TV series and that even when it was in full bloom, it was only ever okay. However, not everyone was as keen to pour weedkiller on Sáez Carral's work. Appropriate-Dog-525 wrote on the Netflix section of Reddit that while it was 'a little Dexterish,' they gave it a chance and enjoyed it enough to want a second season. Sadly, that seems unlikely. The Gardener was conceived as a limited series with no plans for a follow-up. Still, there are more than a few 'limited series' that got a second run after a popular first season – I'm looking at you, Shogun, The White Lotus, Good Omens, and The Flight Attendant. Online, there's definitely demand for another Elmer adventure with @QueenT_20 writing on X: 'Damn I need a Season 2 of The Gardener ASAP! More Trending @OldKatalyst meanwhile tagged Netflix on their socials to let them know, 'We need season 2 of The Gardener.' Only time will tell whether The Gardener blooms into a bigger franchise. The Gardener is available to stream now on Netflix. View More » A version of this article was published on April 16, 2025. Got a story? ‘The Gardener' Is a Great Pop-Goth Spanish Murder Series

A lot of foreign murder shows are about misery, about agony. Bereft parents bicker in muted kitchens while determined detectives avoid but inevitably confront their own personal failings; grim neighbors offer ominous condolences. Let us gaze at the violent, morose ocean. And then, let us gaze at the violent, morose ocean within. The Spanish series 'The Gardener' (in Spanish with subtitles, or dubbed), on Netflix, takes a campier, soapier approach. It still has ample bloodshed and intrigue, but it is a lot more soda than scotch. 'The Gardener' has plenty in common with slick, dark shows like 'Dexter' and 'You,' though it more often feels like 'Wednesday,' not only in its pop-goth vibes but also in its reliance on its protagonist's wide-eyed stare. Elmer (Álvaro Rico) is a young man with a passion for horticulture. Well, maybe not 'passion': He has no emotions, according to his witchy mom, China (Cecilia Suárez), a fount of Freudian oddities. They were in a car accident when Elmer was little, which caused brain damage that affected his ability to experience and interpret feelings. China has had to teach him how to emote, how to fake it, practicing facial expressions with him as a child and directing his speech and behavior as an adult. Sure, there are downsides to raising a blank sociopath. But the upside is that you can craft him into a perfect hit man, which is what China has done. They use their gardening business as a cover for their murder-for-hire work, and they use the literal gardens to bury the bodies — superb fertilizer, the characters say. And then one day Elmer is dispatched to dispatch Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), a young schoolteacher, and suddenly he wonders if maybe he isn't so empty inside. Maybe he has a lot of feelings, and maybe those feelings are mostly about Violetta and how much he likes her. Maybe instead of killing her, he'll woo her. Maybe this is love! Or … maybe it's a brain tumor. You don't have to know all the #boymom lore to guess that China is no fan of Violeta and that, in fact, Violeta could never understand Elmer the way she does, never love him for who he truly is, as she does. A boy's best friend is his mother and all that. This adds up mostly to indulgent, histrionic fun: Scenes are scored with organ music, and everything is very dun-dun-duuuuun when the focus is on Elmer and China. Far less interesting is the inevitable police subplot, but where goes a TV murderer, so goes a dogged female cop with boundary issues. SIDE QUESTS

4 hidden Netflix gems you can't miss this April

Netflix always offers a steady stream of new content each month, but with so many shows to choose from, it's easy for some hidden gems to get lost in the shuffle. While some original series steal the spotlight, there are a few underrated shows in April 2025 that deserve your attention. From intense family dramas to thrilling mysteries and a few surprising historical twists, these series are perfect for anyone looking for something fresh to binge. We've rounded up four standouts that might not have the buzz they deserve but are certainly worth adding to your watchlist. The Residence (2025) Imagine a murder mystery set in the White House — but with a twist of quirky characters and high drama. The Residence brings the intrigue with its unique setting, following Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), an eccentric detective who's tasked with solving the murder of Chief Usher A. B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito). As Cordelia works through a long list of wealthy and powerful suspects, she must unravel why Wynter was murdered before everything makes sense. If you're a fan of Knives Out, this is definitely one to watch. The Gardener (2025) This Spanish miniseries is shaping up to be one of April's biggest breakout hits. The Gardener introduces Elmer (Álvaro Rico), a young man raised to be a ruthless hitman under his mother, La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez). His life takes a turn when he falls for Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), a woman he was supposed to kill. This complicated romance not only threatens their family business but forces Elmer to protect Violeta from his own dangerous mother. American Primeval (2025) For fans of gritty Westerns, American Primeval will be a must-watch. Set in the bleak Old West, this series follows Sara Holloway (Betty Gilpin) and her young son as they embark on a dangerous journey across the frontier. Along the way, they are joined by Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier), a woman on the run from her tribe. Their journey is further complicated by Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch), a man with his own tragic past. Together, they must survive the perils of the unforgiving West. Project UFO (2025) What if UFO sightings were much more widespread than we thought? Project UFO takes you to 1980s Poland, where a UFO sighting sparks Cold War-era hysteria. The show follows a political landscape embroiled in alien rumors, as well as a nation unsure of what to believe. Set against the backdrop of a society gripped by UFO panic, this miniseries explores what might happen when the truth about extraterrestrial life is no longer a theory, but a reality.
