Elizabeth Olsen Faces the Ultimate Romantic Dilemma in A24's Eternity

A24 just lit the afterlife on fire. This morning, the acclaimed indie studio debuted the first official trailer for Eternity, a high-concept romantic comedy set in the great beyond, starring Elizabeth Olsen (His Three Daughters), Miles Teller (The Gorge), and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air). The film, directed by Dating Amber's David Freyne, will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September before hitting theaters in November, and it's already shaping up to be one of A24's most buzzed-about releases this year. A Love Triangle That Transcends Death The premise? Simple in theory. Chaotic in execution. In Eternity, when people die, they aren't immediately whisked away to Heaven or Hell. Instead, they're given one week, seven ethereal days, to decide where, and more importantly with whom, they want to spend forever. And for Joan (Olsen), death is only the beginning of her problems. Freshly deceased, she finds herself reuniting with her recently dead husband Larry (Teller), the man she built a life with. But the cosmic curveball comes in the form of Luke (Turner), her long-lost first love who died tragically young and has spent decades in the afterlife waiting for her. Joan now faces the impossible: choose the comfortable love she knew or the soul she never got the chance to grow old with. 'A lot has happened in a week,' Joan sighs in the trailer. 'You died. I died. I've just been reunited with both of my dead husbands, and I have to pick where to spend eternity.' The trailer wastes no time diving into the romantic tug-of-war, teasing everything from heaven-adjacent group therapy sessions to surreal bureaucratic afterlife limbo, complete with clipboards and snarky guides. It's 'The Good Place meets The Notebook' with a twist of existential chaos. A Dream Team Behind and In Front of the Camera Eternity boasts a powerhouse team both on screen and behind the scenes. Elizabeth Olsen leads the cast with the charm and vulnerability she's become synonymous with, bringing unexpected warmth and comedic timing to a character teetering between heartbreak and hope. In a recent interview with Extra, Olsen hinted at the film's old-school rom-com roots: 'It's real fun. It's a callback to Billy Wilder films. I think it's gonna be a special romantic comedy that we're all really proud of.' Miles Teller, fresh off Top Gun: Maverick and Apple TV+'s The Gorge, brings his signature swagger and depth as Larry, the solid husband Joan built her life with. Meanwhile, Callum Turner delivers as the hauntingly tender Luke, whose wartime death robbed both of them of a future. Rounding out the ensemble are John Early, In the Heights' Olga Merediz, and Oscar-winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), who's fast becoming the comedic scene-stealer of the moment. Behind the camera, director David Freyne is no stranger to heartfelt stories in unlikely circumstances. After his acclaimed 2020 LGBTQ+ rom-com Dating Amber, Freyne returns to the genre with an otherworldly twist. He also co-wrote the film with Pat Cunnane, a former Designated Survivor writer, whose original script appeared on the 2022 Black List, Hollywood's annual roll call of the best unproduced screenplays. Producers Tim White and Trevor White, best known for Oscar-nominated titles like King Richard, are on board under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner. And with A24's Midas touch, Eternity has all the ingredients of a festival darling and awards-season sleeper. A24's Hot Streak Continues A24 is having a year, and Eternity is the latest jewel in its halo. The studio's romantic gamble follows the success of Materialists, Celine Song's follow-up to Past Lives, which also featured a steamy love triangle, that one between Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. That film grossed over $52 million globally, setting a high bar for indie rom-coms and proving audiences still crave sharp, character-driven love stories with soul. And A24 isn't slowing down. Up next is Architecton (August 1), Viktor Kossakovsky's documentary on Berlin architecture. Then comes Highest 2 Lowest from Spike Lee starring Denzel Washington and Ne Zha 2 (August 22). October brings The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, directed by Benny Safdie, followed by Marty Supremestarring Timothée Chalamet on Christmas Day. With Eternity, A24 is clearly betting that a story about love beyond death will resonate just as deeply as Song's meditation on fate and timing. TIFF, Then Eternity Eternity is set to have its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 4 through 14. Early buzz suggests it could be one of the event's emotional high points, especially as Olsen's performance is poised to anchor one of the most complex, genre-blending romantic narratives in recent memory. Can love that never had the chance to grow compete with a love that weathered decades of reality? Can two wildly different kinds of romance both be right? And if you had to choose just one person to spend eternity with, how would you know? Those are the questions Eternity is asking, and if A24's track record holds, it won't be giving us easy answers. Eternity opens in theaters this November. Watch the full trailer below. Emmys shake-up: ‘The Gorge' jumps into top 5 for Best TV Movie

Are Emmy voters about to gorge themselves on The Gorge? This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead. More from Gold Derby 'Squid Game 3' - instant Emmy predictions for the bloody final season Blessed be the comeback? 'The Handmaid's Tale' is on track to return to this major Emmy category for final season For those unfamiliar with The Gorge, Scott Derrickson's original sci-fi film stars Miles Teller as Levi Kane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, unaware of what mysteries lie below. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller. Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) wrote, "This is a great-looking movie with star-power leads, and not for a second is any of it even close to being plausible, and we're just fine with that." Brian Truitt (USA Today) called it a "Whitman's Sampler of film genres with a delightfully sweet center that belies its freaky packaging." And Jake Coyle (Associated Press) noted, "There is good preposterous and bad preposterous. The Gorge may find some believers on both sides of that gulf." Despite the film's improved fifth-place position in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, its stars remain out of the money. Taylor-Joy is down in 16th place for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress, while Teller ranks 24th for Best Movie/Limited Actor. So, why the disconnect? Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for original telefilms, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series. Over the past five years, only two performers have received Emmy nominations for appearing in traditional TV movies: Daniel Radcliffe for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2023) and Hugh Jackman for Bad Education (2020). Then there's Tituss Burgess, who nabbed a supporting bid for his canceled show's interactive follow-up film, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (2020). Gold Derby's Emmy predictions are based on the combined forecasts of more than 4,600 people (and counting), including experts we've polled from major media outlets, editors who cover awards year-round for this website, and the mass of users who make up our biggest predictions bloc. "The Black Phone 2" Is More Violent, Scarier, More Graphic, Says Director Scott Derrickson

Yara Sameh "Dead is just a word," that's the message behind Universal and Blumhouse's "The Black Phone 2". The official trailer unveiled Sunday at CCXP Mexico, a pop culture convention being held in Mexico City over the weekend. The movie is the sequel to the surprise 2022 hit that grossed $161 million against an $18 million budget. Based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, the movie introduced audiences to the Grabber, a masked serial killer who abducts children, locking them up in his basement. One such kid, however, finds an unplugged but haunted rotary phone that connects him to the ghosts of the previous snatched boys, and in that a possible way out. The movie ends with the Grabber dead, so how is he back? The trailer shows builds to a chilling phone conversation between our hero, played by a returning Mason Thames, and the Grabber, once again played by Ethan Hawke, with the latter telling the teen, 'You of all people should know that dead is just a word.' Then the trailer unleashes a barrage of horror images. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson elaboratedthe nature of ghost stories. 'The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story,' he said prior to the trailer 's reveal. 'But in this one, you've got a ghost that is a villain.' With the first movie, Derrickson tapped into his Denver childhood, where bullies and violence were common. For the new movie, he drew on his high school experience of going to winter camps in the Rocky Mountains. The severity of the weather, the environment and the surrounding Rockies contributed to the tone of the sequel. The difference between middle school and high school ages of the characters is the big change in tone. 'A middle school coming-of-age horror movie is a different animal than a high school coming-of-age horror film,' Derrickson added. 'A there's a ratcheting up of intensity because of that.' Derrickson wasn't necessarily planning on a sequel to "Black Phone" but said Hill wrote to him a month or two after the movie came out with some ideas. And having it set in the high school years proved appealing, especially when he worked out the timing in his head. 'I thought if I go make another movie first and don't make a sequel now like you're supposed to, then by the time I finish, these kids are all going to be in high school,' he explained. The movie he did was the large-budgeted monster Apple TV+ movie titled "The Gorge" with Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. 'And I can return to these characters in this different stage of their lives.' And because of that, "Black Phone 2" is more of a horror film than the first movie, which he considers to be a supernatural thriller. 'It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic,' he said. 'And part of that is because of the age of the kids.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
