"The Black Phone 2" Is More Violent, Scarier, More Graphic, Says Director Scott Derrickson

Yara Sameh
"Dead is just a word," that's the message behind Universal and Blumhouse's "The Black Phone 2".
The official
trailer
unveiled Sunday at CCXP Mexico, a pop culture convention being held in Mexico City over the weekend.
The movie is the sequel to the surprise 2022 hit that grossed $161 million against an $18 million budget.
Based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, the movie introduced audiences to the Grabber, a masked serial killer who abducts children, locking them up in his basement. One such kid, however, finds an unplugged but haunted rotary phone that connects him to the ghosts of the previous snatched boys, and in that a possible way out.
The movie ends with the Grabber dead, so how is he back?
The trailer shows builds to a chilling phone conversation between our hero, played by a returning Mason Thames, and the Grabber, once again played by Ethan Hawke, with the latter telling the teen, 'You of all people should know that dead is just a word.' Then the trailer unleashes a barrage of horror images.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson elaboratedthe nature of ghost stories.
'The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story,' he said prior to the
trailer
's reveal. 'But in this one, you've got a ghost that is a villain.'
With the first movie, Derrickson tapped into his Denver childhood, where bullies and violence were common. For the new movie, he drew on his high school experience of going to winter camps in the Rocky Mountains. The severity of the weather, the environment and the surrounding Rockies contributed to the tone of the sequel.
The difference between middle school and high school ages of the characters is the big change in tone.
'A middle school coming-of-age horror movie is a different animal than a high school coming-of-age horror film,' Derrickson added. 'A there's a ratcheting up of intensity because of that.'
Derrickson wasn't necessarily planning on a sequel to "Black Phone" but said Hill wrote to him a month or two after the movie came out with some ideas. And having it set in the high school years proved appealing, especially when he worked out the timing in his head.
'I thought if I go make another movie first and don't make a sequel now like you're supposed to, then by the time I finish, these kids are all going to be in high school,' he explained.
The movie he did was the large-budgeted monster Apple TV+ movie titled "The Gorge" with Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. 'And I can return to these characters in this different stage of their lives.'
And because of that, "Black Phone 2" is more of a horror film than the first movie, which he considers to be a supernatural thriller.
'It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic,' he said. 'And part of that is because of the age of the kids.'

"Phasmophobia" Movie in Works

Yara Sameh Blumhouse Productions has set its sights on another horror video game to adapt to the big screen, developing a feature based on 'Phasmophobia,' the first-person paranormal puzzle title that became a viral sensation during the coronavirus pandemic. The film adaptation will be produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, in association with Kinetic Games Limited. First released in early access in 2020, 'Phasmophobia' became a social media fixation as Twitch streamers and YouTubers quickly took to the multiplayer ghost-hunting video game. Developed and released by Kinetic Games Limited, the title was a breakthrough hit for the indie banner, becoming the best-selling video game on Steam for several weeks through the final months of that year. It has been ported to several consoles and has sold more than 23 million copies globally in the time since. 'Phasmophobia' was also a critical darling, taking the prize in the category of best debut game at the 2020 Game Awards. The project was unveiled at the first-ever 'Business of Fear' event in Hollywood on Tuesday, which featured Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum and president Abhijay Prakash as speakers. It comes as Blumhouse's latest video game adaptation, following their 2023 title 'Five Nights at Freddy's' — another film based on a streamer-popularized horror game. That Universal release grossed $291 million worldwide — an especially impressive figure, considering it had a simultaneous streaming debut on Peacock in North America. A sequel, 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2,' will be released in theaters on December 5. Blumhouse also sports a game division, with upcoming titles including 'Eyes of Hellfire' and 'Sleep Awake.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Vanessa Kirby Is Expecting Her First Child, Reveals Her Baby Bump at a Fantastic Four Event

Yara Sameh Vanessa Kirby is pregnant with her first child. The actress revealed that she is pregnant and currently expecting her first baby while she attended "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" panel event at the CCXP Mexico, a pop culture convention being held in Mexico City over the weekend. Kirby — who played an expectant mother for her Oscar-nominated lead role in the 2020 film Pieces of a Woman — walked the red carpet in a shimmering blue form-fitting Schiaparelli dress and black sandals. As she posed for photographs, she cradled her baby bump. The "Crown" star was joined at the event by her Marvel castmates Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Kirby is currently involved with retired lacrosse player Paul Rabil. They went public with their relationship on Instagram in November 2023. At the time, Rabil, 39, posted a series of photos of the pair together, as he wrote in his caption, "From the very minute we first met in Des Moines, around the world and back, life is far better, more purposeful and more beautiful with you ❤️.' The couple was first linked in October 2022 after being spotted together in New York City. Back in April, Kirby posted a slew of romantic photos on Instagram of the pair vacationing in the West Indies. She captioned: "What a beautiful time away to stop for a second to appreciate the people you most love. "Five Nights At Freddy's 2" Gets New Poster

Yara Sameh Blumhouse has dropped a new poster for the sequel to its box-office horror phenomenon "Five Nights at Freddy's". The reveals were made Sunday night at the pop culture convention CCXP festival in Mexico City. Based on the blockbuster game series, "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi. "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" is again produced by Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon. The highest-grossing horror film of 2023, its sequels plot hasn't been disclosed. Shattering expectations in 2023 with a $300M worldwide gross, "Five Night at Freddy" adapts Scott Cawthon's popular video game franchise of the same name and follows Mike (Josh Hutcherson), a troubled young man who reluctantly takes a job as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant, Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, hoping it will help him retain custody of his young sister. That fateful decision instead drags him into the black heart of a supernatural nightmare. The film was one of several items that were unveiled at the festival Sunday including a new trailer and poster for the upcoming sequel to "The Black Phone". Blumhouse Founder and CEO Jason Blum took the stage in Mexico City to mark the company's 15th anniversary and unveil a slate of updates, exclusive footage and surprise reveals. James Wan, Atomic Monster CEO + Founder, was also in attendance and introduced the trailer for Blumhouse's big summer pic "M3GAN 2.0", which bows on June 27.
