"The Black Phone 2" Is More Violent, Scarier, More Graphic, Says Director Scott Derrickson
"Dead is just a word," that's the message behind Universal and Blumhouse's "The Black Phone 2".

unveiled Sunday at CCXP Mexico, a pop culture convention being held in Mexico City over the weekend.
The movie is the sequel to the surprise 2022 hit that grossed $161 million against an $18 million budget.
Based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, the movie introduced audiences to the Grabber, a masked serial killer who abducts children, locking them up in his basement. One such kid, however, finds an unplugged but haunted rotary phone that connects him to the ghosts of the previous snatched boys, and in that a possible way out.
The movie ends with the Grabber dead, so how is he back?
The trailer shows builds to a chilling phone conversation between our hero, played by a returning Mason Thames, and the Grabber, once again played by Ethan Hawke, with the latter telling the teen, 'You of all people should know that dead is just a word.' Then the trailer unleashes a barrage of horror images.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson elaboratedthe nature of ghost stories.
'The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story,' he said prior to the

's reveal. 'But in this one, you've got a ghost that is a villain.'
With the first movie, Derrickson tapped into his Denver childhood, where bullies and violence were common. For the new movie, he drew on his high school experience of going to winter camps in the Rocky Mountains. The severity of the weather, the environment and the surrounding Rockies contributed to the tone of the sequel.
The difference between middle school and high school ages of the characters is the big change in tone.
'A middle school coming-of-age horror movie is a different animal than a high school coming-of-age horror film,' Derrickson added. 'A there's a ratcheting up of intensity because of that.'
Derrickson wasn't necessarily planning on a sequel to "Black Phone" but said Hill wrote to him a month or two after the movie came out with some ideas. And having it set in the high school years proved appealing, especially when he worked out the timing in his head.
'I thought if I go make another movie first and don't make a sequel now like you're supposed to, then by the time I finish, these kids are all going to be in high school,' he explained.
The movie he did was the large-budgeted monster Apple TV+ movie titled "The Gorge" with Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. 'And I can return to these characters in this different stage of their lives.'
And because of that, "Black Phone 2" is more of a horror film than the first movie, which he considers to be a supernatural thriller.
'It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic,' he said. 'And part of that is because of the age of the kids.'

Horror Hit "28 Years Later" Sets Streaming Date
Yara Sameh Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodi Comer and Ralph Fiennes' hit horror thriller "28 Years Later" is coming to digital streaming this week. The third film in the horror film franchise that began with "28 Days Later" in 2002, "28 Years Later" reunites the original film's director, Danny Boyle, and its screenwriter, Alex Garland. The film was released in theaters on June 20. The official logline for "28 Years Later" reads, 'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.' According to a listing on Prime Video, "28 Years Later" will be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, July 29. When it is released, "28 Years Later" will also be available on several digital platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube. The film is still playing in theaters. So far, "28 Years Later" has earned $70 million domestically and $80 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $150 million. The film had a $60 million production before prints and advertising costs, per The Numbers. While those who have the Rage Virus in "28 Years Later" have zombie-like qualities, Danny Boyle insisted in an interview with TIME Magazine before the film's release in theaters that the antagonists are not zombies. 'We had this thing about, 'No, they're not zombies. They're infected,'' Boyle told TIME. 'We wanted them to behave in a different way physically, but they also weren't undead. They could die and they will die, but so will you if they catch you.' In "28 Years Later", Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character, Jamie, takes his 12-year-old son, Spike (Alfie Williams), to the mainland where the infected roam over the objections of his wife and the boy's mother, Isla (Jodie Comer). The trip to the mainland is a rite of passage where the younger people sheltered by their island community learn to hunt the infected. Bold told TIME that part of the storyline was influenced by the coronavirus pandemic. 'When COVID first happened, we wore gloves, we disinfected groceries,' Boyle told TIME. 'But gradually over time, you start taking more risks. You don't stay in that super alert stage. You evolve. And so it is in 28 Years. They begin to take risks. Jamie takes his 12-year-old son to the mainland even though, as the mom says, that's f---ing crazy.' "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" Unveils Trailer
Yara Sameh The official trailer for 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' has been unveiled, teasing the continuation of Freddy Fazbear's chilling reign. The sequel from Universal and Blumhouse has a new tagline: 'Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances.' Emma Tammi returns as director. Josh Hutcherson, star of the first film, also returns for the sequel, which includes cast members Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail and Piper Rubio. The first film, which earned $297 million at the global box office, featured Hutcherson playing a security guard at Freddys Fazbear's Pizza. It went on to become Blumhouse's highest-grossing movie ever. Hutcherson told Variety last year that the huge success was unexpected. 'We hoped it would connect with audiences,' Hutcherson said. 'But I don't think that anybody, even on our side of things, expected it to really connect the way that it did.' Hutcherson also hinted to Esquire the follow-up would be 'scarier.' 'There's more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way,' he said to the publication. Murtada Elfadl reviewed the first film for Variety, writing that 'Hollywood has not been successful at turning video games into movies — a disappointing streak that 'Five Nights at Freddy's' fails to correct.' Elfadl added that 'there's not enough of the animatronic creatures. Despite their distinctive look, they are not used effectively for horror or hilarity, missing the mark on both counts.' Harrison Ford Lands Emmy Nomination for "Shrinking"
Yara Sameh Harrison Ford has landed his first ever Emmy nomination. The Hollywood legend reached the new milestone Tuesday, earning his first-ever nomination on Tuesday for his role in the Apple TV+ comedy 'Shrinking," in the category of best supporting actor in a comedy series. Ford will compete against Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo, Jeff Hiller, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Urie, and Bowen Yang. He had been tipped to receive a nomination last year for the show's debut season but he was bested by The Bear's Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who won, and Lionel Boyce, Hack's Paul W. Downs, Only Murders In The Building's Paul Rudd, Abbott Elementary's Tyler James Williams, and SNL's Bowen Yang. Last year, the series scored an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nomination for Jason Segel and an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Jessica Williams. The "Star Wars" star also received a Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film nomination at this year's Golden Globes and a nom for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards but didn't win either. Ford stars as Paul Rhoades, well-known and experienced psychotherapist and Jimmy's (Jason Segel) mentor at their workplace. A bit of a curmudgeon who draws comparisons to Batman and more, Paul has a bit of his ego and can come off arrogant at times, but he cares for his patients and for the people in his life that he loves. Paul also has Parkinson's disease. "Shrinking" co-creators Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, who moved from behind the camera to guest-starring in Season 2 as a very notable role, Louis Winston, both have a 'deep history' with the illness as both of their fathers have been diagnosed with it. Lawrence also mentioned that his 'mentor' Michael J. Fox, influenced the portrayal of Parkinson's in the series. Fox has been cast in Season 3 of the comedy series. Apart from this arc for Paul Rhoades, he often finds himself placating Jimmy, who worries a lot about his patients and will bend over backwards to help them. Paul is big on boundaries, and he calls his home his 'fortress of solitude.' He also did secret 'chats' with Jimmy's daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) in Season 1 that Jimmy eventually found out about. Of course, they were mini therapy sessions. Ford hasn't made a great deal of television; he started his career with small roles on shows such as "Ironside," "The FBI," "Gunsmoke," and "Kung Fu" before moving on to movies. His first major role was in Paramount+'s "1923".
