Two cruise ship tourists found dead at beach as brutal gales batter Greece

Two Vietnamese tourists, on a cruise ship holiday to Greece, died after gale-force winds battered the popular holiday island of Milos Two cruise ship holidaymakers have died at sea in Greece after powerful gales battered a tourist hotspot, sparking travel mayhem for thousands of visitors. ‌ A male and female passenger, both Vietnamese nationals, were discovered at Sarakiniko beach on the popular holiday island of Milos. The coastguard confirmed the pair lost their lives following a devastating incident on Friday. ‌ A representative for the local coastguard stated: "The man and woman were found unconscious in the sea and were taken to the local health centre." ‌ The coastguard said the pair were on a cruise when gale-force winds wreaked havoc on the island. The spokesperson said: "The woman fell in the water and the man apparently tried to save her." According to The Greek Reporter, their bodies were retrieved by a private boat and driver before being taken to a health centre. Greece's civil protection ministry warned of strong winds reaching up to 54 miles per hour, particularly in the southern Aegean Sea and the Sea of Crete. These severe weather conditions led to the cancellation or delay of most ferry services from Athens to these popular holiday islands, the Mirror reports. ‌ Ferries from the main Athens ports of Piraeus, Lavrio, and Rafina to the islands in the Aegean have been cancelled until at least later today. The coastguard has advised travellers to check with their shipping companies for updates on services. Despite this, Greece's national weather service predicted the gale-force winds would subside by Friday night. However, the Athens National Observatory cautioned that these strong winds could also pose a significant risk of wind-driven forest fires. A fire reportedly broke out in a forest on the island of Kefalonia on Friday, leading to the evacuation of 112 people to was hit with horror blazes just two weeks ago, forcing tourists to flee as Athens turned red. Infernos were battled in parts of the capital and on the countries two largest islands. Emergency crews were pictured working to stop a wildfire raging near Crete's largest city of Chania. This fire started in two separate spots and quickly spread into a larger blaze, burning down two homes. Another fire also battered parts of Evia, north of Athens and at least 335 firefighters, 19 planes and 13 helicopters were involved in the emergency operation. At the time, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis said: "The real difficulties are ahead of us."

Protesters prevent Israeli cruise ship from docking at Greek island of Syros

BEIRUT — The MS Crown Iris, a cruise ship operated by Israeli company Mano Maritime, was forced to abandon its stop at the Greek island of Syros and head to Cyprus instead on Tuesday after pro-Palestinian protesters blocked 1,600 Israeli tourists from disembarking, several media outlets reported. The incident was confirmed by Mano Maritime to The Guardian and The Greek Reporter. According to The Greek Reporter, which cited accounts from Israeli tourists shared with Israeli Channel 12 and The Guardian, around 300 protesters gathered on the Ermoupolis dock, waving Palestinian flags and displaying a large banner reading "Stop the genocide." The ship had been scheduled for a six-hour visit. The protesters condemned Israel's war in Gaza and criticized what they described as the "economic, technological and military" cooperation between Greece and Israel. "As residents of Syros, but above all as human beings, through this action we want to contribute to ending the genocidal war that is ravaging our region," they said in a statement. No incidents, clashes or arrests were reported. Demonstrators marched from Miaouli Square to the Nissaki area, where the cruise ship was to dock, chanting slogans and remaining on site until the vessel departed, despite efforts to facilitate passenger disembarkation, The Greek Reporter said. Some passengers responded by waving Israeli flags and chanting patriotic slogans, witnesses told The Guardian. Mano Maritime confirmed the incident to The Guardian. Condemnation by a Greek minister Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar contacted his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, about the incident, the Greek Foreign Ministry confirmed, without disclosing details of their exchange. Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis condemned the protest in Syros on Wednesday, calling it "unthinkable and offensive to Greece," The Greek Reporter said. "Some people — regardless of their origin, unless Israelis have lost their status as human beings — paid for their tickets on this ship and chose to spend their holidays in Greece. And others forcibly impose themselves — for their own reasons — and prevent them," he added. This is not the first time Greek nationals have mobilized to express opposition to Israel's military campaign in Gaza, which has killed nearly 60,000 people, according to the enclave's Health Ministry. The war was triggered by Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people. The United Nations this week accused Israel of killing more than 1,000 Palestinians during aid distributions. On Tuesday, the director of one of Gaza's largest hospitals said 21 children had died of malnutrition and hunger in the past 72 hours. The Israeli government has openly signaled its intention to expel Gazans from the enclave, sparking accusations of ethnic cleansing. Last October, members of a Greek dockworkers' union blocked the loading of a container of ammunition destined for Israel in protest against the war in Gaza. Social media posts have also documented peaceful demonstrations and individual actions in Greece opposing Israel's military campaign, which is backed by the United States.

Graves Discovered on Silk Road Route Reveal Ancient Burial Customs

Archaeologists working deep within China's Xinjiang province have discovered over 200 ancient tombs which date back to the Warring States period as well as the Qin and Han dynasties, according to a study published in NPJ Heritage Toksun County, located near the oasis city of Turpan, researchers have unearthed a communal graveyard spanning approximately 10,000 square meters, the largest ever found in the Turpan Basin. The sites are adorned with large mounted piles of dirt and stones, leading scientists to conclude that these were communal burial cultures, a sharp contrast to the solitary graves that China's elite were given. Located near a river, the burial site is thought to have been especially important to nomadic groups. In Central Asia, early nomadic or semi-settled societies would place their plots near river valleys or springs. This allowed different groups to converge on the site, feed their animals, and bury dead members of their community according to their after the burial site was established, Turpan would become one of the key destinations on the Silk Road trade route. Ekbar Kelim, a local cultural official, told The Greek Reporter that he and his fellow researchers have already unearthed evidence of trade within the tombs. Kelim and his team plan to conduct further excavations of the tombs and surrounding areas. They will examine burial offerings and other artifacts such as ceramics, fabrics, and skeletal remains to hopefully find other evidence of intercultural interaction. They believe that the tombs of Turpan could reveal how ancient China interacted with the rest of the world.
