Two Vietnamese tourists, on a cruise ship holiday to Greece, died after gale-force winds battered the popular holiday island of Milos
Two cruise ship holidaymakers have died at sea in Greece after powerful gales battered a tourist hotspot, sparking travel mayhem for thousands of visitors.

A male and female passenger, both Vietnamese nationals, were discovered at Sarakiniko beach on the popular holiday island of Milos. The coastguard confirmed the pair lost their lives following a devastating incident on Friday.

A representative for the local coastguard stated: "The man and woman were found unconscious in the sea and were taken to the local health centre."

The coastguard said the pair were on a cruise when gale-force winds wreaked havoc on the island. The spokesperson said: "The woman fell in the water and the man apparently tried to save her."
According to The Greek Reporter, their bodies were retrieved by a private boat and driver before being taken to a health centre.
Greece's civil protection ministry warned of strong winds reaching up to 54 miles per hour, particularly in the southern Aegean Sea and the Sea of Crete. These severe weather conditions led to the cancellation or delay of most ferry services from Athens to these popular holiday islands, the Mirror reports.

Ferries from the main Athens ports of Piraeus, Lavrio, and Rafina to the islands in the Aegean have been cancelled until at least later today. The coastguard has advised travellers to check with their shipping companies for updates on services.
Despite this, Greece's national weather service predicted the gale-force winds would subside by Friday night. However, the Athens National Observatory cautioned that these strong winds could also pose a significant risk of wind-driven forest fires.
A fire reportedly broke out in a forest on the island of Kefalonia on Friday, leading to the evacuation of 112 people to safety.Greece was hit with horror blazes just two weeks ago, forcing tourists to flee as Athens turned red. Infernos were battled in parts of the capital and on the countries two largest islands.
Emergency crews were pictured working to stop a wildfire raging near Crete's largest city of Chania. This fire started in two separate spots and quickly spread into a larger blaze, burning down two homes.
Another fire also battered parts of Evia, north of Athens and at least 335 firefighters, 19 planes and 13 helicopters were involved in the emergency operation. At the time, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis said: "The real difficulties are ahead of us."

‘I will not be back' - Mirror readers explain why they're ditching Spain

Spain is by far the most popular country among UK travellers, with close to 18 million of us visiting in 2023 — far more than the 9.2 million who took a trip to second-place France "The message we are receiving loud and clear from locals, especially in the islands and where we usually visit in Andalucia, is that we should stay away and are not welcome." ‌ That is how Mirror reader Allan Wilcox feels. He, like millions of Brits, is a regular visitor to Spain. In fact, Spain is by far the most popular country among UK travellers, with close to 18 million of us visiting in 2023 — far more than the 9.2 million who took a trip to second-place France. ‌ While it would be absurd to suggest that the country's love affair with Spain and its incredible culture, food and drink, spectacular weather, and general good vibes is over, there is undeniably a groundswell of frustration at a shift in attitude on the Iberian Peninsula. This comes amid a warning about the quality of breaks in Benidorm. ‌ READ MORE: Spanish beach bars demand urgent action as they reveal cost of Brits staying away A lot of Brits have taken overtourism protests to heart, heeding the words of campaigners who say that mass tourism is killing the culture of destinations including the Canaries and the Balearic Islands; the strident messages slapped on walls by graffiti artists; and the actions of protesters who squirted holidaymakers in Barcelona. Each week many of them email in to the Mirror's travel desk (webtravel@ to share their views on trips to Spain and whether they're still planning holidays in the country of 48 million. ‌ Although it would be unfair to suggest that their views are completely typical of the UK population at large, particularly given the small sample size, a clear anti-Spanish holiday sentiment has emerged. Sarah Meager has been particularly frustrated by new laws that prohibit smoking and vaping on terraces. She was dismayed to discover that the law covered private terraces when it comes to holiday villas and hotels. "We discovered this in Lanzarote in February. You are not even allowed on the terrace of your own room. It is a ridiculous decision. Even if only one member of a group smokes it means you just can't relax and enjoy yourself," she explained. ‌ Kevin Durkin is a committed Spain holidaymaker, having visited the country many times over a 30-year period. "Over the last few years, the anti-British sentiment has just grown. Some bar owners have put up signs telling the British to keep away and some hotel owners don't want us either," he said. "I do not need Spain, they can keep their latest charges and hatred of the British. I will not be back, neither will my friends or family. Adios." Kevin, who speaks Spanish and moved to the country several years ago, admitted that most of the ire from locals was directed towards "the loud British element, usually fuelled by alcohol", and that respectful tourists were unlikely to be bothered. ‌ For Linda Munro, overcrowding was a major issue. She flew into Majorca, where the airport has been struggling with long queues this summer."Border control is very, very stressful and must be putting families off," she recalled. "My husband and I got through the scanners, no problem. However, the rest of the family had to queue for an hour and a half. On the way back, it was worse, as people were worried they might miss their flights home. Our family just made it on time. They all said they wouldn't be back abroad anytime soon." Allan Wilcox is a committed visitor of Spain and is "happy to spend our money supporting local businesses. These include restaurants, bars, hotels and shops." Since overtourism protests began however, he has started to feel unwelcome. "The message we are receiving loud and clear from locals, especially in the islands and where we usually visit in Andalucia, is that we should stay away and are not welcome. Since the local feelings appear so strong and tourists have to run the gauntlet of being shouted or spat at or have to endure intimidating protests, we are no longer happy to visit the country under these conditions," Allan said. "Consequently, we have decided to holiday elsewhere and have not visited Spain for the past couple of years."

Ryanair's little-known bag rule can cause passengers a major headache

Ryanair passengers could see their luggage rejected at the boarding gate, even if they are willing to pay extra for it. The budget airline allows passengers on regular fares to bring one "personal bag" for free, as long as it meets a certain size restriction. Ryanair passengers face getting into a spot of bother at the boarding gate thanks to one of the airline's little-known rules. The Irish airline's passion for fining travellers whose bags are too big is now well known. Less widely circulated are rules about how much you can and can't pay if you get caught with a non-compliant piece of luggage. Ryanair has a no cash policy at the boarding gate. That means even if a passenger is prepared to pay the fee, if they only have physical money on them, they may be forced to leave the bag behind. This comes after the amount Ryanair pay boarding staff for catching oversized bags came to light. Have you been caught out by Ryanair? If you'd like to share your story, email webtravel@ "Our bag policy is simple; if it fits in our bag sizer (which is bigger than our agreed dimensions) it gets on free of charge. If it doesn't fit in our bag sizer, you pay a gate bag fee. As our boarding gates are cashless, gate bag fees cannot be paid in cash. These fees are paid by less than 0.1 per cent of passengers who don't comply with our agreed bags rules," a spokesperson for Ryanair said. "For the 99.9 percent of our passengers who comply with our rules, we say thank you and keep flying, as you have nothing to worry about." The budget airline permits travellers on standard tickets to carry one "personal bag" free of charge, as long as it adheres to specific size limitations. This is a recent change in policy. Previously, the dimensions were 40x25x20cm, but these have been updated in line with changes to EU legislation. Now, Ryanair's personal bag requirements are 40x30x20cm, and staff members can use bag measuring tools at every gate to check if passengers' luggage exceeds this limit. If your bag doesn't fit into the sizer at the gate, you'll be slapped with an additional fee to bring it on board, which could amount to £70 or 70 euros. The most affordable Ryanair flights are the Basic Fares, which only permit a passenger to bring a personal item (which must fit under the seat) on board, as well as being allocated a random seat. Despite the ticket price being lower than other fares, it comes with numerous restrictions. We've all read or heard tales about travellers getting stung with eye-watering fees because their personal items exceeded the size limit. Arguably, one of the most shocking happened to Mirror reporter Ruby Flanagan, who was charged £50 to take her water bottle onboard. "On the 50 minute flight back to London, I realised that it would've been cheaper to throw the bottle away and buy a new one for £25 when I landed. Of course, that level of hindsight just made me feel stupid. But that would've been ridiculously un-environmental - and would've taken away from the satisfaction of being the over one-millionth plastic bottle of water saved from landfill by refilling mine. Shout out to Dublin Airport for informing me of that info," she recalled.
