Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has opened up about his life with wife Beth Cullen-Kerridge, reflecting on "never giving up". The couple first crossed paths in 1997 when Beth cheekily asked Tom for money to pay for a stripper at a friend's birthday bash in London. Despite the rather unusual first encounter between the pair, it wasn't long before their romance started to blossom, with Beth proposing just months after they first met. Since launching the Hand and Flowers pub in 2005, Tom and Beth's careers have moved apart, but they faced the challenges of running their first venture together head-on. Tom recently revealed on the Go-To Food podcast how their determination played a crucial role in the success of their Michelin-starred establishment: "We've got to this point over 20 years and I think it's about relentlessness, never giving up." (Image: undefined via Getty Images) He added: "I mean she's as strongminded as me with that relentless drive of just doing stuff and doing things that we want to do and moving forward." Tom reflected on the challenges of running The Hand and Flowers, which is commemorating its 20th year, especially in the early days of living and working together with his partner: "I think at first it's very difficult, you live in one small room and you run a business together." "Yeah, those pressures tell, it's like living with a flatmate or something like that in a confined space." (Image: undefined via Getty Images) He also commented on how overcoming such obstacles has bolstered their relationship: "There's no escape or kind of release, but as you work through it, you come to realise that it actually makes you much stronger as opposed to a weakness." Commenting on his journey since establishing the Hand and Flowers with his wife in 2005, Tom expressed gratitude for their partnership in business: "There's not many people that with their partner, have been able to go on and do stuff and grow together." (Image: undefined via Getty Images) Not only has the Hand and Flowers secured two Michelin stars under his leadership, but Tom has expanded his influence by opening additional establishments including The Coach and The Butcher's Tap in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, along with four more venues in Manchester and London. Tom married Beth three years after they first met, and together they welcomed their child, Acey, in 2015, marking a personal milestone alongside his professional accomplishments.

The celebrity chef owns six restaurants including the two-Michelin-starred pub The Hand and Flowers and often appears on The Great British Menu. Despite his culinary success, he revealed that running his various establishments is not always smooth sailing. In a candid admission, Tom confessed that managing his businesses is a "constant battle." He explained that while three of his restaurants do make a minor profit, the others barely break even and one loses money. He likened the process to "spinning plates" to keep things going. Tom told the Guardian: "We have six sites and I would say three operate at a very minor profit, two just about break even, and one's losing a lot of money. It's a constant battle of spinning plates and moving money to keep it bubbling along." Tom conceded that three sites did indeed run at a profit (Image: Getty Images ) Jamie May, the executive chef and butcher at Tom's Butcher's Tap and Grill in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, also shared his experiences with the challenges of the industry. He said: "I prepare every day like I'm going into war." Article continues below This isn't the first time Kerridge has spoken out about the difficulties facing the restaurant industry. He previously expressed his views in a piece for The Guardian in 2024. Before the general election, Tom voiced his concerns about rising costs for products such as olive oil and eggs, energy bills, business rates, and the 20% VAT rate, stressing it was "no surprise" to see restaurants shutting down. Following Labour's accession to power, Tom rated the new government a "six out of 10" in the new interview, critiquing April's National Insurance hike as "slightly ill thought out". Tom has to engage in "spinning plates" to keep things "bubbling" (Image: Getty Images ) Tom went on to share the secret to a perfect barbecue - and it seems that it's all down to selecting the right charcoal. He explained that it's better to have "bigger" as it holds the temperature for longer. Speaking to the Western Mail, Tom said investing in charcoal "goes a long, long way", saying it will "last twice as long" as cheaper alternatives and cook your food more evenly. Article continues below As for choosing the food, Tom favours homemade burgers, lauding the ability to mince your own beef. He advised using a lean mince, with the flavouring added after they've been shaped. When it comes to some meats, he recommended slow-cooking: "It's quite good to braise things and slow-cook them in the oven first, in a dry rub or marinate, then leave them to cool and reheat them on the smokiness of the barbecue - the best of both worlds."

Tom Kerridge shares secret he's hiding from wife as she'll 'go mental'
Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge is a man of many talents - but there's one thing he's keeping from his wife, Beth, and it's all to do with his love for the band Oasis Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge and his wife Beth have been a couple since their fateful meeting in 1997, when she boldly asked him for £3 to cover the cost of a stripper at his mate's birthday party. Despite facing numerous challenges together, including the gruelling hours spent launching their now-famed eatery The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, there remains one thing Tom refuses to share with his other half. Speaking to The Guardian, Tom, an ardent Oasis fan, expressed his excitement for the band's upcoming reunion concerts later this year but also shared his concerns – particularly one he's keeping under wraps from Beth. He admitted: "I had to pay a huge amount of money for the tickets," confessing only they cost "a lot". He added: "I can't divulge because my wife would go mental. "One, because I had to pay a huge amount of money for the tickets. And two, because it's in September so they might not even be together by then!" While tickets for the iconic Manchester group's eagerly awaited Wembley Stadium gigs were originally set between £75 and £200, they've skyrocketed on resale platforms like StubHub, fetching up to £8,000 for a pair, reports Gloucestershire Live. Not only did Tom secure a Michelin star within a year of opening The Hand and Flowers with Beth, but his deep-seated passion for Oasis also saw him clinch one of his most cherished achievements – being crowned the winner of Celebrity Mastermind. "Oasis was my specialist subject," he revealed to Kate Thornton on her White Wine Question Time podcast. "Two Michelin stars, the first, first pub in the world to ever do it, and Celebrity Mastermind winner!" Tom shared a hilarious anecdote with Kate about the time one of his musical heroes visited his Buckinghamshire pub while keeping his trademark jacket on during the entire meal. "He's a very funny character," Tom said, reminiscing about the visit. "He's very full-on. He came to eat one day in the Hand and Flowers, and not once did he never stop being Liam Gallagher. "He spent the whole lunch with his cagoule on, zipped up to the top. He was drinking espresso martinis right, from the start, all the way through to the end. And when he finished his lunch, he moon-walked into the kitchen to thank all the chefs." The chef didn't hold back his admiration for the rock icon, telling Kate: "He's actually Liam Gallagher but on steroids! He's twice the Liam Gallagher you ever think he's gonna be." Tom added: "For me, Liam Gallagher should be Prime Minister. He's one of the great philosophers of our time. He's my leader."
