The Haunted Palace – K-drama Episode 14 Recap & Review
Episode 14 Episode 14 of The Haunted Palace begins with Yoon Gap reuniting with a delighted Mrs. Yoon and a wary Yeo-ri. On their way to work, Yeo-ri accepts Gap's apology as he confesses to tricking her. However, she flinches when he reaches for her and he gives her back Gangcheori's bracelet. The palace is pleasantly surprised by Gap's return. The King hugs him but the ghostbane stone hurts Yoon Gap. Yeo-ri and the King deduce that the stone is reacting to Gap's corpse. Pung-san is eavesdropping via Yoon Gap's soul and realises that the ghostbane stone is their secret weapon. The inner circle gets back to work on the anti-slave reforms. The King finds Gap's enthusiasm refreshing but he also recalls how Gangcheori had cheered him when he had doubted his role as a benevolent king. Gap realises that the King misses Gangcheori. Surprisingly, even Head Eunuch Kim misses Gangcheori's impudence. Suddenly, Gap is in pain and Pung-san 'helps' him. The shaman needs Gap to destroy the King's ghostbane stone, and then the body will be permanently his. All he needs to do is pour 'alcohol' over the stone. However, the loyal Gap refuses. Meanwhile, Yeo-ri and Ga-seop search for Gangcheori. She prays for him, upset that he broke his promise of not letting her go. Surprisingly, he wakes up in Gap's body as well. Chaos ensues as Gap and Gangcheori tussle over the body's dominance. Soon, we see that it is Pung-san helping Gap suppress Gangcheori. He keeps reminding Gap of all the things Gangcheori has taken from him. The next morning, Gap is gone early and Yeo-ri has a vision of him eyeing the ghostbane stone. She rushes after him. In the palace, the King constantly praises Gap and works on the reforms. The ghostbane stone is on his table and Gap decides to pour the 'alcohol' over it. Gangcheori screams no and he throws the liquor and slips. Gap is ejected and he runs off. Both Gangcheori and Yeo-ri find him and he is disappointed in himself. Gangcheori points out that it was Gap who threw away the liquor in the end. However, Gap is afraid of what he might become and begs Yeo-ri to help him cross over to the afterlife. They arrive home and Mrs. Yoon realises that Gangcheori has returned. She cries for Gap and is in shock when she learns that he is dead. The shamans perform the last rites and Gap bids farewell to his mother and Yeo-ri. The King cries as he holds his own ritual for Gap in the palace. Gangcheori knows Gap has feelings for Yeo-ri and wonders why he never confessed. Gap refuses to hurt her as she would never be able to accept his feelings. Gangcheori is impressed and as farewell, agrees to take care of Mrs. Yoon and Yeo-ri. With Gap gone, Pung-san convinces Minister Ahn to destroy the ghostbane stones by tempting him with the Chief State Councillor position. Gangcheori and Yeo-ri move out while Mrs. Yoon mourns Gap. They head to a tavern and are forced to share the only available room. Ah, the classic only-one-bed trope! As they turn in for the night, Yeo-ri is still determined to resolve the ghost conflict for the sake of the ghost, the villagers and her grandmother. She also teases Gangcheori who is awkward about sharing a room. He 'jokingly' makes a proposition but Mrs. Yoon interrupts. She has been searching for them all night and takes them home. It cuts to D-Day as the inner circle gets ready for the ghost's 100th death anniversary. Kwak's officer/assassin, Jung worms his way into the security detail. The King gives his ghostbane stone to his pregnant Queen. Yeo-ri remembers her grandmother mentioning how a shaman can die if the reaper method fails. The caragana finally blooms and Gangcheori drinks its tea as he realises it may be time to sacrifice himself. The ritual begins but the ghost possesses Assassin Jung. He easily fends everyone off, including Gangcheori, and smiles at the King. At the end of The Haunted Palace Episode 14, he stabs the Queen in the stomach. The Episode Review The penultimate week ends with a shocking cliffhanger and while we are surprised by the route they took with Yoon Gap's storyline, The Haunted Palace Episode 14 is still pretty satisfactory. We almost wish the K-drama hadn't included the teaser for the finale since it explains how the possessed Assassin Jung is able to stab the Queen, who has the ghostbane stone. Mrs. Yoon shines as she quickly understands the situation surrounding Gangcheori and accepts him back after mourning her son. And while we'd expected the typical love triangle trope where Yoon Gap goes evil to make Yeo-ri his, his sacrifice fits his backstory as the kind-hearted little boy who stood up for her when she was an outcast. However, the King is a confusing little fellow with the writers taking way too much liberty with his character. The beginning of the show barely gives him any screentime before they make it up by having him work with Yeo-ri and Gangcheori. But his overaffection and PDA for Yoon Gap feel odd, especially when he and his court constantly insist on decorum with Gangcheori. Sure, the hug is a plot device to reveal the ghostbane stone but the King has not shown his own wife or son that much affection as he does to a loyal and like-minded but mere court examiner. The K-drama does highlight that the King is an emotional person with the way he mourns his evil grandfather and cries for the wronged Yongdam villagers. But it is not enough to fall in line for his character to break hierarchy and decorum with the way he does with Yoon Gap. The Haunted Palace – K-drama Episode 13 Recap & Review
Episode 13 Episode 13 of The Haunted Palace begins with a 100-year-old flashback. The enemies are getting close and King Yeon-jong makes a run for it. With nowhere to hide, Escort Officer Cheon Geum-hwi suggests his hometown, Yongdam Village. Unfortunately, on the way over, the enemies find out their location. King Yeon-jong decides to send a decoy to Yongdam so the enemies don't find his new safehouse. Cheon asks for time to evacuate the villagers but the King refuses as it would give away the ruse. With Choi Gil-song's signal, an officer ties Cheon to a tree and they all leave. The enemies slaughter everyone in Yongdam while searching for the King. At present, King Lee Sung is ashamed by his ancestor's cowardice and selfishness. Yeo-ri feels Cheon's guilt as he blames himself for the massacre. But he is not alone. As the 8-foot ghost, he has absorbed the grudge of all the murdered villagers. Gangcheori reveals that the villagers who survived turned bitter and vile. It is why he believes all mortals are loathsome beings. Meanwhile, the 8-foot ghost attacks the Crown Prince. However, the ghostbane stone keeps him away and Ga-seop comforts the prince. Back in the village, Yeo-ri spots Yoon Gap's soul. Gangcheori realises the ghost is scheming something but Yeo-ri has other problems. She wonders what will happen to Gangcheori after Yoon Gap takes back his body. Gangcheori is playful with her and Yoon Gap watches them from afar. In-seon is curious about them too and Yeo-ri flexes their relationship. Gangcheori teases her but he is surprised by the caragana plant suddenly blooming. A flashback shows Ga-seop explaining that caragana flowers have water energy which can help Gangcheori defeat the ghost. It seems to be a necessity as the Imugi's powers are getting weaker and weaker. Elsewhere, the King learns of Kim Bong-in's death and is upset. Paired with the shame of his ancestor's doing, he mopes. However, he does attend the one-legged ghost's ritual. Choi Won-u hesitates but ends up profusely apologising to the ghost which helps him cross over to the afterlife. As for the punishment, the King fines Choi and orders 50 lashings. While the retinue returns to the capital, Pung-san targets Minister Ahn, Kwak's peer and the one who had introduced the talismans. The blind shaman wins him over by promising to make him Chief State Councillor. Yoon Gap continues to watch as Mrs. Yoon dotes over Gangcheori. He is also upset when it is Gangcheori who cheers up a sulking King Lee Sung with some tough love. Gap is hurt that Gangcheori has taken everything important to him. We finally learn that Pung-san hopes Gap's bitterness will fester into an evil grudge. Onto the showdown prep, the King procures an identification tablet for Cheon Geum-hwi. Inspired by the one-legged ghost's resolution, he hopes to share his regret and apologise to the 8-foot ghost which should allow it to cross over to the afterlife. Yeo-ri agrees to hold a ritual 10 days later, on Cheon's 100th death anniversary. She does try to exclude Gangcheori out of concern but he refuses. Meanwhile, the Queen Mother tries to find closure. She is heartbroken when Yeo-ri reveals that Prince Yeong-in has been devoured by the 8-foot ghost. However, Yeo-ri lies that praying with his precious belongings shall set him free. The kid ghost calls her out but she points out the tenacity of a mother's prayer. The kid misses his mother and Yeo-ri helps him cross over as well. Pung-san's next phase is put into motion as Lord Ahn invites Gangcheori for a meal. The Imugi realises it is a trap but it is too late as he faints. He is taken home and he seems to be burning up. At the end of The Haunted Palace Episode 13, Yoon Gap wakes up in his own body. Mrs. Yoon is delighted to see that he is back to his old self. But Yeo-ri is worried by Gangcheori's disappearance. The Episode Review As the penultimate week, this K-drama is off to an exciting start. The Haunted Palace Episode 13 unravels all the remaining mysteries such as what happened in Yongdam Village and why the ghost is targeting one particular royal bloodline. Yoon Gap finally returns but is leaning towards the misguided villain role rather than the hero we all thought he would be. Gangcheori and Yeo-ri's romance is still pretty sweet even though the focus is largely on wrapping up the ghost conflict. And while it is quite sad how Yoon Gap feels replaced, the moments between Gangcheori and the King, Yeo-ri and Mrs. Yoon were quite heartwarming. It highlights just how much Gangcheori has changed from the beginning of the show. And finally, a shoutout to Sung-jae for portraying two distinct characters so well that we could identify Yoon Gap the moment he woke up in his body. How Korean shows like 'Tastefully Yours' reflect shifting content landscape
Traditional formula for measuring a content's success has long changed, says content creators Today, a show's failure to achieve high ratings on TV does not mean failure. Increasingly, content is experiencing a divide between streaming success and traditional broadcast viewership. As of Wednesday, "Tastefully Yours," a romantic comedy headlined by Korean stars Go Min-si and Kang Ha-neul, has soared to No. 2 on Netflix's global Top 10 non-English TV series. The series also clinched the fourth spot on the streamer's Korea rankings for the top 10 most-watched series. Despite its streaming momentum, the series is struggling to gain traction on linear television. "Tastefully Yours" posted a 3.4 percent viewership rating on TV, trailing behind dramas such as "Heavenly Ever After" and "The Haunted Palace," which pull in a solid 8 to 10 percent in ratings on average. "Tastefully Yours" is one of many Korean shows to post significantly different viewership numbers on television and streaming platforms. A notable example is KBS' variety show "Beat Coin," which initially saw viewership ratings hover around the 1 percent mark during conventional airing. But when a retooled version was released on streaming platform Wavve, the show exploded in popularity, dominating KBS' non-drama category for 28 consecutive weeks between May 8 and Nov. 13, 2023. The rebooted show also ranked No. 1 on Netflix Korea's Top 10 series chart two days after its release. The disconnect between success on linear TV and streaming platforms is largely attributed to demographic distribution among the two media. Viewers of traditional broadcasts are older, while those middle-aged and younger are rapidly shifting to digital platforms. The gap between success in TV and streaming platforms becomes even more pronounced when the content resonates with global youth audiences, as is often the case with Netflix. "Success on Netflix is now generally seen as being more important than high TV ratings," said an industry official from a local drama production studio, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'With success in the streaming space becoming more and more important, from the development stage, we are focusing on creating globally accessible storytelling by incorporating elements such as easily translatable dialogue and editing styles optimized for binge-watching.' With content enjoying longer lifespans thanks to streaming and viral short-form clips, he said producers are now prioritizing long-term potential rather than overnight success, shifting away from focusing solely on a show's performance during its initial television run. 'Even if a series underperforms on broadcast, it can find new life elsewhere. The traditional formula for measuring a content's success has long changed,' he said. Yet, concerns are mounting that the dominance of major streaming platforms, particularly Netflix, could skew creative direction and lead to monopolistic practices in the content industry. The streamer recently raised its subscription fees in Korea, with the ad-supported tier jumping from 5,500 won ($4) to 7,000 won and the basic plan increasing from 9,500 won to 12,000 won.
