Watch: Why some States are upset with the Centre over revenue sharing: Part 1

Why some States are upset with the Centre over revenue sharing: Part 1 Almost every State — including those ruled by the BJP — is calling for a change in the current revenue-sharing formula with the Central government. To understand this growing demand, it's crucial to first unpack how the Centre earns revenue, what constitutes the 'divisible pool,' and why many States view the existing formula as inequitable — a concern that has only deepened in the post-pandemic years. In the first part of this three-part series, The Hindu Data Team simplifies the complexities of fiscal federalism using a ₹100 note to illustrate how funds are shared. The Fifteenth Finance Commission had recommended that 41% of the divisible pool be allocated to States. Now, the Sixteenth Finance Commission is visiting all States to determine the new revenue-sharing formula for the next five years. This series delves into the roots of the Centre-State fiscal debate and explores the road ahead. Pakistan formed 0.0001% of India's imports in FY25

The closure of the Integrated Check Post at Attari has brought to a complete halt the already negligible trade between India and Pakistan. The shutdown followed the recent terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. In 2024-25, Pakistan accounted for just 0.0001% of India's total imports—more than 1,000 times smaller than its 0.1% share in 2017-18. This slide from insignificant to minuscule began after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, when India imposed a 200% import duty on goods from Pakistan. Chart 1 shows Pakistan's share in India's imports over time. A similar trend is seen in India's exports. In 2024-25, only 0.12% of India's exports were headed to Pakistan, down from around 0.6% in 2017-18—again, a marginal figure. Chart 2 shows Pakistan's share in India's exports over the years. In 2024-25, pharma products formed close to 40% of all India's exports to Pakistan. While most of the imports from Pakistan were fruits and oilseeds. Anika K is interning with The Hindu Data Team
