PM to open Yellow Line of Namma Metro today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bengaluru on Sunday to inaugurate the much-delayed Yellow Line of Namma Metro between R.V. He will address a public function on the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore campus, Electronics City, on Sunday, where he will lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase III. Sources in the BJP said he may respond to the Congress' allegations during the speech. This visit comes at a time when the political scene in the State is hotting up and a nine-day Monsoon Session of the State legislature is set to commence from Monday. Mr. Modi's visit is expected to further add to the political heat. Meanwhile, both the Congress and BJP have been trying to take credit over Namma Metro in the city.

Shah visit to set BJP's narrative for 2026 polls
Guwahati: Union home minister Amit Shah will visit Assam on Aug 29 to formally launch BJP's political narrative for the upcoming assembly elections, due early next year. The party is eyeing a third straight term amid a shifting regional political landscape. Adding weight to Shah's ideological kick-off to poll campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam 10 days later, on Sept 8, with a development-heavy itinerary, criss-crossing districts. Shah's visit includes the inauguration of the newly constructed Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, followed by a keynote speech at the Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan. "The speech by Amit Shah ji to the panchayat representatives will be an important one ahead of the elections. The process of political narrative building will definitely start from that day," chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after attending a preparatory meeting at the BJP's state headquarters here for the two high-profile visits. Later that evening, Shah will attend the birth centenary celebration of Golap Borbora, Assam's first non-Congress CM — symbolically reinforcing the BJP's anti-Congress legacy. Modi will begin his tour in Golaghat district, where he will dedicate the country's first bio-ethanol refinery in Numaligarh — a Rs 4,000 crore project — to the nation. He will then travel to Mangaldai to lay foundation stones for three major infrastructure projects: the Guwahati Ring Road, a bridge over the Brahmaputra between Narengi and Kuruwa, and the Mangaldai Medical College and Hospital. Later, Modi will inaugurate the birth centenary celebration of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika at a programme in Guwahati, as his tribute to the music legend seen as part of BJP's effort to connect with Assamese identity and cultural pride. This narrative-building exercise is not just about speeches — it's a coordinated strategy involving symbolic gestures, development showcases, grassroots mobilisation, and targeted messaging to consolidate support ahead of the 2026 polls. While most events are officially govt functions, the BJP is mobilising its full organisational machinery to ensure the success of both high-profile visits, which are expected to energise the party's grassroots and set the tone for the upcoming elections. "All BJP MPs, MLAs, and district leaderships are meeting here to ensure that the visits are successful," Sarma said. TN allots Rs 90 cr for SC/ST students' overseas scholarship
Trichy: While the Centre's National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) scheme has been facing hurdles, the Tamil Nadu government has steadily expanded its overseas scholarship programme for SC/ST students pursuing higher studies abroad. According to the state Adi Dravidar and tribal welfare department, the number of provisional sanctions has risen to 190 this year, with ₹90 crore allotted. Of these, 52 scholarships have been approved for the March intake, while the rest will be sanctioned for the September intake as courses begin. A total of 500 applications have been received this year, said department secretary G Lakshmi Priya. In 2024–25, 185 students were provisionally sanctioned scholarships; 161 eventually received funding, amounting to ₹65 crore. The scheme, which dipped in 2021–22 and 2022–23 due to the pandemic and operational bottlenecks, was restructured in 2023 to increase sanctions, raise scholarship amounts, and simplify processes. Since 2021–22, five beneficiaries have joined universities in the QS world top 25, 43 in the top 100, 136 in the top 500, and 107 in the top 1,000. TAHDCO also provides coaching to help students clear qualifying exams for admission abroad. Under the NOS, the Union government supports 125 students nationwide each year. However, in July, it withheld awards to nearly half the students for 2025–26 citing a possible fund crunch. The central policy note also states awards will be given "subject to availability of funds." Other central schemes for SC/ST students have faced similar issues. In July, 11 students at Tamil Nadu's National Law University in Trichy under the Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS) scheme did not receive the Centre's share, though the state had released its portion. While the overseas scholarship is entirely state-funded, the PMS follows a 60:40 cost-sharing model between the Centre and the state.
