Karen Pirie star Emer Kenny married to huge TV presenter with toddler son

Karen Pirie is back and she's set for a whirlwind - but off-screen, things were just as intense for series creator Emer Kenny, who couldn't rely on her famous (and busy) husband. Karen Pirie's second season is packed with intense drama and explosive bombshells - but things were just as intense behind the scenes. ‌ Series creator Emer Kenny juggled triple duties as writer, executive producer and cast member as Karen's best friend River… while also being a new mum. ‌ 'Filming was hectic,' she says, 'My baby was 12 weeks old when I started writing the season and he was 18 months old when we were shooting. He came to Glasgow with me for three months.' ‌ Emer had a secret weapon, but it wasn't her husband, presenter Rick Edwards. 'I wouldn't have been able to do it without my mum,' she says. 'My husband was away working in Germany at the Euros because he's a presenter, so I had my mum with me at all times.' Kylie Minogue helped too, making a daunting experience a delight: 'Kylie has her own brand of rose that we drank the whole way through. It was absolutely crazy but I never feel more alive than when we're making stuff. It just feels thrilling.' Lauren Lyle returns to the ITV crime drama as the sharp, scrappy Scottish detective in the second season of Karen Pirie, and DI Karen's ready to ruffle a few feathers. ‌ Freshly promoted - albeit reluctantly - she's still got everything to prove. 'She's determined to prove herself,' Lauren says. 'Even though she's been promoted, she's still doubted. It's a reluctant promotion. Where her boss says, 'You're difficult but you're great so you deserve it.' That's what drives her. There's a general frustration with men being in her way and having to listen to them.' 'Biggest ever' teeth whitening sale beats Amazon Prime Day with 50% off ‌ The TV adaptation of Val McDermid 's best-selling novel series was a hit during its first season. So it's no surprise that Emer also felt the pressure. 'It was a little daunting,' she says, 'Season one was my first time writing a show. Coming back, you really hope you can match the energy and bring another good story. So I was a little daunted but the book has a really exciting story.' Based on A Darker Domain, the second novel in the Karen Pirie series, the new season dives into a case that's haunted the nation for decades: the 1984 disappearance of heiress Catriona Grant and her toddler son, Adam. ‌ 'She's kidnapped at gunpoint, and then a ransom note arrives at her family home with a polaroid of her, and she is never seen again,' teases Emer. 'There's never a handover. No other ransom note was received.' Until now. When a body is found in a remote quarry, it blows the case wide open. But it's not Catriona. 'It's a man,' says Emer, 'But her car key is in his pocket.' As the investigation unfolds, so do the secrets - including Catriona's steamy, hidden affair with Mick, played by The Last Kingdom 's Mark Rowley. ‌ 'Julia (Brown) and Mark were amazing together,' Emer says, 'When I got their auditions in, I knew it would work. It was really important that their love story felt romantic and real.' But Catriona isn't the only one getting her heart tangled this season. Karen's own love life heats up with DS Phil Parhatka, played by Zach Wyatt, but she's keeping it strictly under wraps. ‌ 'Karen's under the impression a woman can only have one of the other - a career or a home life,' Lauren says. 'Phil's a good, smart man who's willing to support her, but Karen thinks she has to choose her career to keep getting ahead. Her career gives her a sense of worth, but it can damage her love life.' But the cold case earns her more attention and Karen struggles to keep the balance. 'No one at work knows they're together and she wants to keep it that way,' Emer says. 'But there's a whole new level of public interest. This is an even bigger case than the first one so she has a lot of eyes on her.' If the stakes are higher, the humour's sharper too - something inspired by Miss Congeniality. 'Lauren and I always talk about Sandra Bullock 's character in that film as a big touchstone. We love her humour and her no-nonsense personality,' Emer says. ‌ Other icons helped shape Karen's DNA: Helen Mirren 's steely Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, Kate Winslet 's bruised brilliance in Mare of Easttown and Toni Collette 's grit in Unbelievable. Season two took the cast from gritty Glasgow streets to the sun-drenched chaos of Malta. 'We had to move the shoot to September because it was too hot in Malta to shoot,' Emer remembers. 'We had tons of running scenes through the streets of Malta in 40 degree heat. But I think they loved it. I think they loved having their inner James Bond moments.' Audiences clearly love it too and with eight novels in the series (and counting), there's no shortage of source material. 'There is potential for another season and ITV are really supportive,' Emer says. 'It just depends on whether the audience wants more.' But for now, Karen is here to stay - and she's fiercer than ever.

You can finally binge all 4 episodes of 'fantastic' historical drama for free

A critically acclaimed historical drama has arrived on a UK streaming service for free – just over a year after it was first released. Shardlake, which was originally released on Disney Plus in May 2024, was based on the 2000s novel series of the same by CJ Sansom. Set in the 16th century, the novels followed both fictional and non-fictional characters during the reign of King Henry VIII – much like BBC drama Wolf Hall. The series starred Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean, William Shakespeare theatre star Arthur Hughes, and Anthony Boyle of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fame. Production on the four-part miniseries was overseen by The Last Kingdom creator Stephen Butchard and TV director Justin Chadwick, known for EastEnders. The series was cancelled by Disney Plus in January of this year, long after the first season had concluded, with prospective plans for a second season shut down. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video But perhaps there could be fresh hope of a delayed renewal after all – that's if Shardlake takes off again after ITV decided to broadcast all four episodes. The series follows Hughes' character Matthew Shardlake, a fictional 16th-century lawyer who has been asked to solve a mysterious murder at a monastery. Titular character Shardlake is under the employ of Thomas Cromwell, played by Bean, and is 'riddled with scoliosis' according to a synopsis from the Radio Times. Shardlake will be starting its run on ITV tonight at 9pm – episode two will be broadcast on June 16 and 9pm, with episodes three and four presumably going out on June 23 and June 30. All four episodes are currently available to stream on ITVX, however, for those who are excited for the whodunit series and want to binge the whole thing. On X, @The_Perdita commented: 'The mother and I are watching Shardlake – [Disney] are going to hell for not renewing it for another season.' @Monkey_Maisie said: 'ITV is showing a new series, Shardlake, at 9pm Monday. We loved the books so hope it will be good. It has Sean Bean in it!' When it was cancelled, @ChriThor said: 'Predictable really, we can't seem to keep good TV shows and it appears that Shardlake is another one that has been cancelled.' @TariboWest55 bemoaned: 'Really gutted to hear the news – Shardlake won't be returning for a second season. What a missed opportunity. Great cast and fantastic books. Disappointed.' The first Shardlake book, titled Dissolution, was published in 2003, with Dark Fire, Sovereign, and Relevation all coming out later in the same decade. More Trending In the 2010s, the series continued with Heartstone, Lamentation, and Tombland, with the last of the latest books coming out in 2018. No Shardlake books have been released since. Author CJ Sansom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in his bone marrow cells in 2012, but continued to write and planned to continue the series. However, he sadly grew too unwell to keep on working and died in April 2024, aged 71 – he'd spent his final days in a hospice near his home in Brighton. Beautiful but tiny UK seaside village constantly rated as best in Britain

One seaside town has been ranked the best in the country, receiving five-star ratings for its impressive views of the Northumberland coastline and serene atmosphere. One Northumberland village has been named the best seaside town in the UK four years in a row. The UK's top consumer champion, Which?, conducted its annual seaside survey of over 120 UK towns and villages across the UK and the results reveal a clear winner. Bamburgh is the landslide victor, retaining its title as the most beloved seaside town among travellers. According to the results of Which's survey, Bamburgh received five-star ratings across the board for its beach, seafront, scenery, tourist attraction and its tranquil atmosphere. ‌ The village achieved an 86% overall destination score in the recent survey, which was the consumer group's biggest seaside survey to date. The results reflect the opinions of 5,000 Which members, many of whom cited the spectacular views of Bamburgh Castle in their reviews. ‌ Bamburgh is situated within the Northumberland countryside, at the midway point between Berwick upon Tweed and Alnwick. Part of the reason it's so popular among British holidaymakers is due to its close proximity to Newcastle airport and the Chathill train station (only a 30-minute train ride). The most famous fixture of Bamburgh is, naturally, its namesake landmark: Bamburgh Castle. Even if you haven't visited the castle in-person, you may have seen the iconic fortress in television shows or films like The Last Kingdom, Transformer: The Last Knight, or Frontier. The award-winning castle is hailed as 'the real Last Kingdom of Bebbanburg'. Today, the Anglo-Saxon citadel is owned by the Armstrong family, and their love of pets is the reason the grounds are now dog-friendly. The Castle has become a huge attraction for the area, hosting a range of activities including Dragon Hunts, Ghost Tours and Outdoor Cinema Screenings. Fans of the Netflix series The Last Kingdom can also partake in the Uhtred of Babbenburgh Tour which runs between February and November to learn about the castle's history. ‌ Bamburgh Castle has become a distinguishing feature of the Northumberland coast and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. Not only is the fortress filled with 3,000 years of history and tales of Vikings and The Last Kingdom, but it also offers stunning views of the sea beyond. Bamburgh Beach sits just beyond Bamburgh Castle and is notable both for its sand dunes and sea views. The beach has also become a huge draw for surfers, considered one of the most consistent spots along the coast. For those interested in learning, there are multiple surf schools operating on the north end of the beach from spring until autumn. Travellers venturing north along the beach will come across the famous 'Stag' Rocks. This coastal landmark gets its name from the white stag painted on the rocks. While the origin of the painting is unknown - some locals say it appeared after a stag jumped into the sea - today, the rocks are regularly painted to keep up the local history. Stag Rocks have also become a popular vantage point for birdwatching. This portion of the coast also offers unique views of the protected Farne Islands - a small group of islands a few miles off the coast of the Northumberland between Bamburgh and Seahouses. If you're in the area, a visit to the nearby fishing village of Seahouses is certainly a must. Regular boat tours leave from Seahouses' harbour to the Farne Islands where travellers can see puffins and a large colony of grey seals. Travellers can even walk straight from Seahouses harbour to Bamburgh Castle to enjoy a stunning stretch of the Northumberland coastline. The roughly three-mile walk is predominantly on golden sand.
