HBO CEO reveals what Craig Mazin is planning for The Last of Us Season 3: Release date, cast changes and more
Synopsis HBO CEO Casey Bloys has confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 is slated for a 2027 release. Showrunner Craig Mazin is deciding whether to structure the season as one long installment or two separate parts. While Neil Druckmann steps back to focus on Naughty Dog, Mazin will lead the series forward, with HBO expressing confidence in his vision. While Bloys didn't narrow down the timeline beyond 2027, he confirmed that production planning is underway. HBO CEO Casey Bloys has offered a significant update on The Last of Us Season 3, including its likely release window and behind-the-scenes changes. In a recent interview with Variety, Bloys confirmed that the hit series is 'definitely planned for 2027,' though several creative decisions are still in revealed that showrunner Craig Mazin is still determining how to structure the next chapter — whether it will unfold over one extended season or span two more. 'It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that,' Bloys said, indicating that the future format remains open. Series co-creator Neil Druckmann will not be involved in the upcoming season, as he focuses full-time on his role as head of Naughty Dog and ongoing game development. 'Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog,' Bloys explained. 'But I believe he's given us a good blueprint with the show. Craig is a pro, so I think we'll be in excellent shape.'Despite Druckmann's exit, Bloys expressed full confidence in Mazin's ability to carry the story forward: 'The reason I greenlit The Last of Us in the first place was because Craig was passionate about it after Chernobyl. That creative drive is what mattered most.'With shifts in character arcs — including Pedro Pascal's reduced involvement and uncertainty around Bella Ramsey's role — some fans have speculated about challenges in continuing the story. But Bloys dismissed those concerns: 'Not from a marketing perspective. The video game gives the show a strong foundation, and the first two seasons have firmly established the brand.' While Bloys didn't narrow down the timeline beyond 2027, he confirmed that production planning is underway. No casting updates or episode counts have been announced Last of Us remains a cornerstone for HBO, which received 142 combined Emmy nominations across HBO and Max this year. The show alone earned 16, underscoring its critical and commercial success.'We're proud of the team and thrilled with the recognition,' Bloys said, acknowledging executives like Francesca Orsi (Drama), Amy Gravitt (Comedy), and Sarah Aubrey (Max Originals) for their roles in the network's success.

Kaitlyn Dever to play a pivotal role in The Last of Us season 3
Kaitlyn Dever has been officially cast as Abby in The Last of Us Season 3. After the end of season two, which fans will tell you fell flat, the focus of the story now shifts to the arrival of Abby. Dever's new role will be the lead as her character eliminates Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, dramatically. Fans of this story and those who have played the computer game will know that Abby is a former Firefly and the daughter of Jerry Anderson. Anderson was killed by Joel, which sees Abby embark on a quest of vengeance. Abby tracks down Joel and kills him. This becomes the first thread in a web of violence that is woven into the story, seeing Abby and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on either end of a vast divide. In time, Abby grows wary of her mission for revenge. She forms a bond with Lev, a runaway who escaped the clutches of the Seraphites. This recent season was met with widely spread disappointment. Naturally, the show's creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, are in search of redemption. This was surely the thinking with the announcement of this new casting at an Emmys FYC event. Adapting PlayStation or Xbox titles for film and television very seldom goes well. The Last of Us may have gotten away with it in season one, but not so much in its more recent run. Bella Ramsey's resemblance to the character of Ellie has also been called into question. Despite that, her performance remains an irrefutable aspect of the production. The slump may be a result of the long wait between season one and season two. There was a two-year gap between seasons, the stories of which jumped ahead by five years as far as the plot is concerned. Filming for the next season of The Last of Us will begin in 2026. The show is projected to air in 2027. That can either be viewed as the directors taking their time so as to make up for this last season, or creatives simply falling into the same trap all over again. Was ‘The Last Of Us' Cancelled? What We Know About ‘TLOU' Part 3
The Last of Us Season 2 was, well, a wee bit controversial. The HBO hit put fans through hell, killing popular characters off in spectacularly brutal ways while descending further and further into nihilism. Joel (Pedro Pascal) was essentially beaten to death with a golf club before poor Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) eyes. Ellie, in turn, embarked on her own mission of vengeance, murdering multiple people — including a pregnant woman! — in the process. Oh, and The Last of Us revealed that Seattle is plunged in a civil war between the revolutionary Wolves and cult-like Seraphites. Basically, The Last of Us Season 2 did all it could to bum us out. Did TLOU go too far? Was The Last of Us cancelled?!? There was not a new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX last week, meaning fans have been left with a devastating cliffhanger. The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 ends with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) tracking Ellie down to the theater she and her friends are using as a temporary base. Abby kills Jesse (Young Mazino) and threatens Tommy (Gabriel Luna). The last we see of this tense stand off is Abby shooting in Ellie's direction. Then, we flashback to what Abby was doing three days earlier, i.e. the day Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) arrive in Seattle. So what comes next? Will The Last of Us come back? Here's everything we know about the future of The Last of Us… Nope! There is no new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX tonight. There were a total of seven episodes in The Last of Us Season 2. That means that The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 'Convergence' was the season finale. Nope! In fact, HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season all the way back on April 9, 2025. We are definitely getting Abby's side of the story…eventually. Yes, HBO is making The Last of Us Season 3. While The Last of Us's co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have tried to play coy about what comes next, they did confirm some fan theories during a recent virtual press conference DECIDER attended. As fans of the video games might expect, The Last of Us Season 3 will adapt the rest of The Last of Us II. Meaning Season 3 will tackle what Abby was up to during those three tumultuous days in Seattle. 'There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into,' The Last of Us co-creator and co-showrunner Craig Mazin said. 'There's no question that Abby is the hero of her story. Kaitlyn Dever is the hero of a story always, you know? I mean, if you have Kaitlyn Dever, you use a Kaitlyn Dever.' Mazin also teased that the third season will answer many questions sparked in Season 2. 'What is going on? How did that war start? How did the Seraphites start? Who is the prophet? What happened to her? What does Isaac want? What's happening at the end of Episode 7? What is this explosion? What is all of it?' Mazin said. 'And all of that will become clear.' We might already know that there will be a third season of The Last of Us, but we don't yet know exactly when it will be back. However, we have some theories. The first two seasons of the show both took approximately two years to go from scripts to the screen. Logic would state that The Last of Us Season 3 will come out in 2027. That said, production on the first two seasons of The Last of Us was delayed due to COVID-19 and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, respectively. That means there's a chance there could be a tighter turnaround for the third season. We think the earliest TLOU Season 3 could come out would be late 2026, but 2027 is our safe bet. Worried that The Last of Us Season 2 ends with Ellie's death? Still trying to convince yourself that Jesse is okay? Wondering why Mel's (Ariela Barer) death was actually so much worse in the show than it was in the game? Check out DECIDER's breakdown of The Last of Us Season 2 finale to learn more!
