Museum dedicated to life of former Prime Minister gets £280,000 makeover
A Gwynedd museum dedicated to the life and times of the UK Prime Minister David Lloyd-George has re-opened following a major redevelopment. The museum, which is in the Liberal politician's former home village of Llanystumdwy, has been given a £280,000 makeover. The money has come thanks to £250,000 funding from the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), Cyngor Gwynedd and the Countess Lloyd George's Fund. Get all the latest Gwynedd news by signing up to our newsletter - sent every Tuesday As part of the project, museum designers Mather & Co were commissioned to modernise the displays and integrate the artefacts with the story of one of the 20th Century's most famous radicals. It is hoped that the new look will allow visitors to gain a deeper insight into the life of the famous politician and the context of his lifetime. Lloyd-George was well known for his scathing wit and debating skill in the Houses of Parliament. He also played an important role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles, which led to the end of the First World War. The council says it is hoped that the thematic approach to the stories and objects presented will bring more understanding into Lloyd George's life. According to Cyngor Gwynedd, the exhibit aims to explore both the positive and negative aspects of his character, decisions and their legacy. The museum features four thematic zones, entitled: The Politician, The People, The Man, and The Legacy. 'The Politician' describes a chronological storyline that present key moments from Lloyd George's early career in Parliament, his significant roles during the First World War, and the later stages of his political life. 'The People' delves into how the press portrays political figures and their decisions, shaping public opinion. 'The Man' unfolds through two sub-themes, across different sections of the museum, Early Life and Family Life.'The Legacy' presents the impact of Lloyd George's political actions and decisions, alongside his international recognition. Key objects for visitors to look out for include Lloyd George's draft copy of the Treaty of Versailles, the first copy of the People's Budget from 1909, Chancellor of the Exchequer uniform worn by Lloyd George, and the many freedom casks gifted to him by cities and towns from Wales, England and Scotland. Megan Cynan Corcoran, Museums Development Officer for Cyngor Gwynedd said: 'It has been both a pleasure and a responsibility to redevelop the Museum's displays. Over the years, new displays and display cabinets had been added, but many cases from the original 1960s museum remained. "With this investment, we are able to present historical facts alongside supporting artefacts in a thoughtful manner. "This marks only the beginning of our ongoing effort to narrate the life and times of David Lloyd George and the legacies he left behind.' Councillor Medwyn Hughes, Cyngor Gwynedd Cabinet Member for Economy and Community, said: 'I'm delighted that the Lloyd George Museum has reopened its doors ready for the summer season. "Lloyd George remains a significant and controversial figure in Welsh, British and World history and it all started at the Highgate cottage. 'I am delighted that the museum continues to attract visitors from near and far. "We now offer a contemporary experience with engaging graphics and immersive audiovisual activities, encouraging reflection on Lloyd George's significant decisions and their lasting legacies." The design of the museum has carefully considered the building's architectural features, including its high ceilings and structural beams. Hanna Lorenz, 3D Designer for Mather & Co said: 'Working on the redevelopment of the Lloyd George Museum has been a profound privilege. "Breathing new life into spaces that stand beside his childhood home and within sight of his final resting place is to connect past, present and future. "It's more than a Museum – it's a living tribute to one of Britain's most influential figures, rooted in the very landscape that shaped him.'

Colorado woman who survived four cancer battles killed by stray bullet in her home
A Colorado mother who battled breast cancer four times has died after being struck by a stray bullet inside her home, according to a report by The People. Jennifer James, 49, a single mother of four, passed away on April 28 in Berthoud, Colorado – a quiet town roughly 50 miles north of Denver – after a bullet entered her house and struck her as she sat inside. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) confirmed the news in a statement on Facebook. Check out the post here: Authorities were called to the scene at around 11:20 pm local time. First responders, including deputies from LCSO and a Colorado State Patrol trooper, immediately rendered first aid. Despite their efforts, James was pronounced dead at the scene. Several other individuals were in the home at the time, but no one else was injured. According to local station KDVR, police identified 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku as a suspect through surveillance footage captured from neighbouring homes. He was taken into custody on May 1 and allegedly admitted to firing the gun. Worku told detectives he was cleaning his firearm in a car when it discharged outside the driver's side window. He claimed he was unaware there was a live round in the chamber and believed the bullets would strike a wall, according to the affidavit cited by KDVR. After the incident, Worku reportedly turned off the vehicle's lights and left the area to avoid drawing attention. He now faces a charge of first-degree murder – extreme indifference – and is being held in the Larimer County Jail on a $1.25 million cash-only bond. A disposition hearing is scheduled for June 6. The sheriff's office confirmed the investigation remains active. As per the outlet, Jennifer James was known for her strength and generous spirit. Friends shared that she had been fighting cancer for the fifth time and undergoing chemotherapy at the time of her death. 'Jennifer was the epitome of sunshine. Anyone who knew her thought of her as the nicest person they had known,' wrote close friend Juliána King on a GoFundMe page launched to support James' four children. King added, 'Jennifer was an incredible human being and was loved by so many people.'

Wisconsin Supreme Court election: Susan Crawford beats Brad Schimel
The 4-3 liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be preserved as Susan Crawford is on course to comfortably beat Brad Schimel to the seat in Tuesday's election. The race was called for Crawford, the liberal-backed Dane County judge, shortly after 9 p.m., with her margins too much for Schimel, the Waukesha County judge who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, despite votes still to be counted. The election had a number of significant issues riding on it, including the future redistricting of Wisconsin, which is currently gerrymandered in Republicans' favor, and questions over abortion access and public union powers in the state. The involvement of billionaire Tesla owner Elon Musk, who is a close adviser of Trump, is overseeing scything cuts to federal jobs and program funding, and held a campaign rally in which he gave $2 million to two Schimel supporters earlier this week, was not enough to turn the race in the conservative's favor. Almost $100 million in outside money flooded into Wisconsin for the election, with Musk himself pouring millions of his own money on the Republican ground campaign, as well as offering $100 to anyone who signed a petition in support of Schimel. Democrats sought to capitalize on the liberal backlash to Musk's actions in the Trump administration, dubbing the election "The People vs. Elon Musk."

In Wisconsin Supreme Court Race, Republicans Shrug at Democrats' Focus on Elon Musk
Outside a wedding venue in Stoughton, Wis., the other night, a group of Democratic protesters unfurled an enormous 'For Sale' sign and a giant check while a man dressed as Elon Musk pursed his lips. It was meant to represent the millions that the world's richest man had spent on behalf of Brad Schimel, the conservative candidate for State Supreme Court in Wisconsin who was about to appear inside. 'Elon has just taken over the presidency,' fumed Mary Nervig, a resident of nearby McFarland who had joined the protest. Now, she worried, Musk could take over Wisconsin's highest court, too. Inside the venue, though, Musk barely came up during a marathon of speeches. Not by name, at least. 'Isn't it great,' former Gov. Tommy Thompson told his fellow Republicans from the stage, that Republicans and Democrats in the race were 'spending almost on par for the first time?' Indeed, Musk has spent some $20 million on behalf of the conservative candidate, Brad Schimel, erasing what has in recent years been a Democratic fund-raising advantage in the state. But Wisconsin Democrats are betting that a focus on Musk's role in the race will turbocharge their base, firing up supporters like Nervig, as they try to preserve the court's narrow liberal majority. They've put his face in campaign ads and even named a statewide tour 'The People v. Musk.' 'As much as it is a choice between these two Supreme Court justices, it is also a way to send a message about what Musk and Trump are doing,' Ben Wikler, the Wisconsin Democratic chairman, told supporters at an event I attended in Eau Claire last week. If any of that spooks Republicans, they're not showing it. They've welcomed Musk's money. And when I asked Brian Schimming, the Wisconsin Republican chairman, how his party should respond to the charge that Musk is trying to buy a State Supreme Court seat, his answer was simple.
