Bat-Mite Is No Longer Canon in James Gunn's DCU
Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier talks X-Men, Eddie Murphy provides an update on Shrek 5, and Alien: Earth introduces a 'ruthless' cyborg. Your bongo to Theed is now arriving; it's Morning Spoilers! In conversation with Screen Rant, Eddie Murphy confirmed he's 'still in the booth' recording lines for Shrek 5 before beginning work on a Donkey spinoff movie this September. We're still in the booth, and literally, we're still doing Shrek. We start in September on Donkey, we're doing a Donkey one, and that'll be three years from now, but we're about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September. Donkey's going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They've written this funny story. We're doing that, starting that in September. During a recent interview with The Playlist, X-Men director Jake Schreier stated he finds the material 'inherently interesting and complex.' I mean, yeah, without going into too much—really almost any detail. What I can say is, it's just inherently interesting and complex material. The core idea of what X-Men is involves complexity. It's an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that's inherently interesting and complex material. Photos from the future set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveal Glasgow's Bothwell Street will double as Lexington Avenue in the upcoming sequel. View this post on InstagramThe curse of an Aztec death whistle terrorizes a high school in the trailer for Whistle, starring Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse, Sky Yang, Jhaleil Swaby, Ali Skovbye, Percy Hynes White, Michelle Fairley, and Nick Frost. A child's drawing comes to life in the final trailer for Sketch, starring Tony Hale and D'Arcy Carden. A teaser trailer for the demonic-possession movie, Traumatika, claims any footage from the film is too intense to show. We also have a trailer for Lineage, the fifth and allegedly final film in the Hell House LLC series. During a recent press event attended by Comic Book, Alien: Earth actor Babou Ceesay revealed his character is a 'ruthless' cyborg. I don't even want to give away his backstory… but he's a cyborg, let's just say that. When I say cyborg, what do you think? This is interesting. People have been saying odd things to me when I tell them I'm a cyborg. So some people think that he's all machine when they say 'cyborg,' but that's not it. He's human and flawed in a human way. Whereas you've got people who are synths, who are, I guess, AI brains with synthetic bodies and then you've got the hybrids that are both. So he's a cyborg. The best way I can describe him, he's like an iPhone 1 in a world of iPhone 20s. But what he does have is an unbelievable clarity in terms of what he wants to do and a determination. He's ruthless for that reason. Finally, during a recent episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast (via Comic Book), James Gunn stated every character name dropped in the first season of Peacemaker is likely still canon in the new DCU, barring Bat-Mite. I will say that everything in the [first season episode Best Friends For Never] is canon except for maybe Bat-Mite. He's one of my favorite characters, but I can't say for sure that Bat-Mite is real. He's a wonderful character from the comics. He's an Imp from the Fifth Dimension who looks creepy and dresses in a little Batman costume. Except the ears are bent, because it's a really ill-fitting Batman costume. He's got skinny little legs [and] a fat little body, and he worships Batman. And so he tries to create these extraordinary circumstances for Batman to prove he's a hero, and it's these nightmarish scenarios. Want more io9 news? All 11 of Adam Sandler's Netflix movies, ranked by critics
Adam Sandler has starred in 11 Netflix original movies to date, many of which he produced. They include movies like "Hustle," "Hubie Halloween," and his latest, "Happy Gilmore 2." Here are all his Netflix movies from worst to best, based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores. For the last decade, Adam Sandler has brought his outlandish brand of comedy to Netflix. It didn't start off well, as his first original movie for the streaming giant, "The Ridiculous 6," got hit with the dreaded 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. But if there's one thing Sandler has always been, it's critic-proof. In the 10 years since, he's continued to deliver a wide array of movies for the streamer, from the "Murder Mystery" franchise opposite Jennifer Aniston to more dramatic fare like "The Meyerowitz Stories" and "Hustle." Sandler's latest film is a return to familiar territory. "Happy Gilmore 2," the sequel to his beloved 1996 comedy, stars Sandler once again in the title role as the unlikely golf hero, who this time returns to the sport to earn money to support his daughter's ballet classes. What did the critics think of "Happy Gilmore 2"? Below, all of Adam Sandler's Netflix movies ranked from worst to best, according to their Rotten Tomatoes score. Note: Rotten Tomatoes scores were accurate at the time of publishing and are subject to change. 11. "The Ridiculous 6" (2015) Rotten Tomatoes score: 0% Summary: Sandler plays an outlaw raised by Native Americans in the Old West. After discovering he has five half-brothers, he sets out with them to find their deadbeat dad. What critics thought: Sandler's multi-film, multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix didn't start well. Critics hated the movie so much that it received the dreaded 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "With the lazy, misshapen 'The Ridiculous 6,' Adam Sandler robs his new Netflix benefactors blind," critic Nick Schager wrote for The Playlist. 10. "The Do-Over" (2016) Rotten Tomatoes score: 9% Summary: Sandler and David Spade play two friends who get into deep trouble when they decide to fake their own deaths and create new identities. What critics thought: Though not as reviled as "The Ridiculous 6," this movie's rating still landed in the single digits on Rotten Tomatoes. "'The Do-Over' is what happens when a successful artist is given lots of money and very little direction. We all deserve better," K. Austin Collins wrote for The Ringer. 9. "The Week Of" (2018) Rotten Tomatoes score: 26% Summary: Sandler and Chris Rock play fathers who have to spend the week together leading up to their kids getting married. Hilarity ensues. What critics thought: Or not. Critics were not fans of this one, either. "While the movie is ultimately more of the same old same old, it is at least not as appallingly sexist and culturally insensitive as 'The Ridiculous Six,'" wrote New York Times critic Glenn Kenny. 8. "Sandy Wexler" (2017) 7. "Murder Mystery" (2019) Rotten Tomatoes score: 43% Summary: Sandler plays a New York City cop and Jennifer Aniston plays his wife who really wants a trip to Europe. When it finally happens, the two find themselves in the middle of a murder on a yacht. What critics thought: Even with the casting of Aniston, critics didn't find much to be entertained by. "It would be uncomfortably cynical to assume that Sandler thinks these novocaine-like comedies are what common people want to watch, but the guy doesn't leave us much choice," wrote IndieWire 's David Ehrlich. 6. "Murder Mystery 2" (2023) 5. "Hubie Halloween" (2020) Rotten Tomatoes score: 54% Summary: Hubie (Sandler) is a man devoted to everyone being safe during Halloween. But after a string of murders on Halloween night, he sets out to save the town. What critics thought: Though still a rotten score, the Sandler movies are starting to get closer to respectability. "Fans of Adam Sandler's usual fare are in for a treat. Everyone else may want to avoid this trick," critic Rob Hunter wrote for Film School Rejects. 4. "Happy Gilmore 2" (2025) 3. "The Meyerowitz Stories" (2017) Rotten Tomatoes score: 92% Summary: An estranged family gathers in New York City to celebrate the artistic work of their father. What critics thought: A Netflix movie starring Sandler finally found praise from critics — but it wasn't a Sandler-produced movie. This was written and directed by Noah Baumbach, who cast Sandler as one of the sons. "Expertly sketched by Baumbach, this memoir-like portrait of lives half-lived is the kind of bittersweet, dimensional character comedy we're now used to seeing told in three seasons of prestige television. Baumbach gives us the whole package in two hours," Matt Patches wrote for Thrillist. 2. "You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah" (2023) 1. "Hustle" (2022)

Joe Locke wraps Heartstopper finale filming: 'Bye Charlie'
Heartstopper star Joe Locke has officially wrapped filming on the highly anticipated finale of the hit Netflix adaptation, signaling the end of an emotional journey for fans of the show. Locke shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing 'Bye Charlie X' alongside behind-the-scenes images with co-star Kit Connor, thanking fans and the creative team behind the series. The final chapter of Heartstopper, based on the sixth volume of Alice Oseman's beloved graphic novel series, was adapted as a film instead of a traditional season. Directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) and written by Oseman herself, the finale has been in production for nearly two months. Kit Connor also confirmed the wrap via social media, closing the book on Nick and Charlie's story. In the final chapter, the couple faces the challenges of a long-distance relationship as Nick prepares to leave for university and Charlie gains new independence at school. Their emotional journey mirrors the personal growth of their circle of friends as they navigate love, change, and letting go. Speaking to The Playlist, Locke explained that filming a feature-length finale was a practical decision. 'We realized the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film… It makes it feel more cinematic and gives it the ending it deserves,' he said. The Heartstopper finale film now moves into post-production, with fans eagerly awaiting its release and one last goodbye to Charlie and Nick's coming-of-age story.

Taron Egerton gives hopeful update on Kingsman 3
Taron Egerton still thinks a third Kingsman movie will happen. Work on the next action/spy flick has been ongoing since the 2021 prequel The King's Man, though director Matthew Vaughn, 54, previously said the project had been slowed due to Egerton's busy schedule. Now, the 35-year-old actor - who portrayed Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin in 2014's Kingsman: The Secret Service and its 2017 sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle - has insisted that he, Vaugn and Harry Hart actor Colin Firth are all still keen to make a third movie. When The Playlist asked Egerton about Vaughn's delay comments, he replied: 'Is that what he said? Yeah, he's so funny. 'He did call me on Friday night, actually. Yeah, look, we both want to do it. And I know Colin is open to doing it, too. 'I think the interesting thing will be figuring out whether we all see the same thing. I love Matthew. Matthew is like family to me. 'I really think there's a brilliant story to tell with the third Kingsman. And I still think it will happen.' Kingsman: The Secret Service - which also starred Mark Strong, Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson - follows a rebellious teen who is recruited into a secret spy organisation and trained to become a gentleman agent. As a tech billionaire plots global destruction, the rookie must rise to the challenge and stop him before it's too late. The film proved to be a critical and commercial hit when it debuted in 2014, bringing in $414.51 million at the box office on a production budget of $81 million. While the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle wasn't as well-received by critics when it released in 2017, it was still a box office success - grossing $410.9 million against a production budget of $104 million. Egerton previously said he hoped the third Kingsman movie would be a 'fitting' conclusion to the spy franchise. He told Collider: '[Vaughn] has every intention of making it, and I have every intention of playing Eggsy one more time. That was always what I thought I was committed to doing. 'It's the role that made my name, I suppose, in a way, I just want it to be absolutely right if we do it again, and I want the story to do justice to the part that really changed my life. 'I want it to be a fitting ending. And I would, obviously, really hope that Colin would come back for at least a part of it, and who knows? We'll have to see, but we are planning to talk about it, actually, the next time we see one another, so who knows? Watch this space.' The Rocketman star suggested the Argylle filmmaker wanted to put the relationship between Eggsy and Harry to the test in the third movie. Egerton explained: 'Eggsy and Harry [will be in it], obviously. But it's the gang coming back together, and it's one of those moments that ... when we wrote the screenplay, it was very much about, okay, I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. 'So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that's what this movie is all about is will they or won't they, let's just say.'

Netflix series about Spotify's origins sees resurgence in popularity
Netflix 's The Playlist, a six-part miniseries fictionalizing the creation of Spotify, is experiencing a resurgence years after its 2022 debut. Despite initially being overlooked by many subscribers, the show has garnered a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and critical acclaim for its 'near-perfect' portrayal and critique of the music industry. Inspired by the book Spotify Untold, the series dedicates each episode to a different facet of the music industry, offering varied perspectives. Netflix has a habit of prematurely cancelling acclaimed series, including past examples like The OA and Mindhunter. The recent cancellation of the murder mystery The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba, is highlighted, despite its positive reviews and strong ratings, possibly due to high internal performance expectations.
