Newport weekend round-up: Pirates in the Port, gigs, theatre
From music festivals to family fun days, there's something for everyone in the city. Kicking off the weekend on Saturday, May 31, is the Pirates In The Port Sea Shanty Festival. (Image: Supplied) The event, organised by local Welsh shanty group Bois Y Bryn, will bring the tradition of sea shanties and folk music to life. From 11am to 7pm, multiple venues in the city centre, including The Riverfront Theatre, will host this lively festival. Entry is free and no booking is required. On the same day, Brazilian thrash crossover band Ratos De Porão will perform at The Cab, Newport. (Image: Supplied) The intimate gig, supported by bands Harrowed, Zero Again, Rank, and Mortal Karcass, will start at 6.30pm. A small number of tickets will be available on the door. (Image: Supplied) The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time continues its run at the Dolman Theatre. Presented by Dolman Theatreworks, the play tells the story of a gifted boy, Christopher Boone, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery while investigating the killing of a dog. The show will be performed on Saturday, May 31, at 7.15pm. Sunday, June 1, sees the return of the free family event, A Teddy Bears Picnic, at the top of Beechwood Park. (Image: Supplied) From 2pm to 5pm, attendees can enjoy a cartoon character disco, inflatable slides and castles, face painting, dance act performances, musical performances, bubble fun, a parrot display, and more. Families are encouraged to bring their favourite teddy and a picnic blanket. With such a wide range of activities on offer, there's no shortage of things to do in Newport this weekend. Whether you're a music lover, theatre enthusiast, or looking for a fun family day out, Newport has it all. Critically acclaimed solo play Jarman coming to Newport
Jarman, which was nominated for Best Solo Performance at the Off-West End Awards 2022, will be at The Riverfront Theatre on Thursday, May 22. The 80-minute performance, written and performed by Mark Farrelly, celebrates the life of Derek Jarman, a filmmaker, painter, writer, gardener, and LGBTQ+ activist. It explores his journey from the pop glamour of Soho to the isolation of Prospect Cottage. The show, which has been performed in Hong Kong, will be in Newport for one night only. It is directed by Sarah-Louise Young. The show has received five-star reviews from Queer Guru, Bum on a Seat, and AJH Loves Theatre. and London Living Large gave it four stars. Queer Guru described it as "a fearless portrait" and "relentlessly inspiring." Bum on a Seat said it was "fabulous, thought-provoking stuff." Performers call at Wales' biggest free outdoor arts festival
Big Splash, presented by The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, is set to return to Newport this summer. The festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the city, features live music, street theatre, dance, crafts, workshops, and activities for all the family across two days, free of charge. The organisers are keen to hear from choirs, dance groups, bands, poetry collectives, and solo acts who want to be part of the celebrations. Sally-Anne Evans, community arts development officer at The Riverfront Theatre, said: "We've always championed local talent as a core part of the festival. "Our community callout is an open invitation to groups and individuals to be part of the experience and perform alongside professional acts." Performers will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the Celebrate Stage, Dock Stage, or at Usk Plaza. (Image: KIRSTEN MCTERNAN) The stages will be live on Saturday 19 July between 11am and 5pm, and Sunday 20 July between 12pm and 4:30pm. All performances must be family-friendly and suitable for all ages. Big Splash is proud to represent the broad and diverse communities of Newport and South Wales. Performers of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a particular welcome to Welsh language acts, artists with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ performers, and members of global majority communities. UK folk-rock band Steeleye Span set to perform in Newport
Steeleye Span will be playing at The Riverfront Theatre on Wednesday, May 7. Founded in 1969, the band is known for pioneering electric folk music and shaping the genre for more than 50 years. Their debut album, Hark! The Village Wait, set the stage for their unique sound. The band's latest release, The Green Man Collection, features tracks from recent albums and new versions of three classic songs. The title track, The Green Man, is a song by Bob Johnson, a member throughout the 70s, which was lost for 40 years. The song discusses climate change, a prescient topic for its time. The band's line-up for this tour includes founding member Maddy Prior, along with Liam Genockey, Julian Littman, Roger Carey, Andrew "Spud" Sinclair, and the newest addition, Athena Octavia. The band's upcoming album, Conflict, will be available exclusively during the tour. The concert is expected to be an exciting night for fans of the genre.
