Critically acclaimed solo play Jarman coming to Newport
Jarman, which was nominated for Best Solo Performance at the Off-West End Awards 2022, will be at The Riverfront Theatre on Thursday, May 22.
The 80-minute performance, written and performed by Mark Farrelly, celebrates the life of Derek Jarman, a filmmaker, painter, writer, gardener, and LGBTQ+ activist.
It explores his journey from the pop glamour of Soho to the isolation of Prospect Cottage.
The show, which has been performed in Hong Kong, will be in Newport for one night only.
It is directed by Sarah-Louise Young.
The show has received five-star reviews from Queer Guru, Bum on a Seat, and AJH Loves Theatre.
Theatre-News.com and London Living Large gave it four stars.
Queer Guru described it as "a fearless portrait" and "relentlessly inspiring."
Bum on a Seat said it was "fabulous, thought-provoking stuff."
AJH Loves Theatre said it was "a performance of such controlled brilliance."

Belfast Giants to retire Adam Keefe's #47 jersey: ‘I am truly humbled'
At his testimonial game on Sunday, recognising 14 years of remarkable service to the organisation as a player and a coach, the Giants legend will become only the eighth player in club history to see his jersey raised to the rafters, never to be worn again by another player. It is the highest honour that can be bestowed in hockey and a wholly deserved one for Keefe, the team's most successful coach and an individual who is described as the "heartbeat" of the organisation. Commenting on the retirement of his 47 jersey, Adam Keefe said: 'It's hard to put into words what this means to me. Belfast has become my home, and the Giants have been my life for over a decade. To see my jersey raised to the rafters, in front of my family and friends, and our incredible fans who have supported me all these years before my testimonial, will be truly humbling. I'm very honoured and proud.' Joining the organisation in 2011 as a hard-nosed forward and quickly establishing himself as captain in only his second season in Belfast, Keefe would win two Elite League titles with the Giants as a player but it is as coach that his legacy has been taken to another level. In his seven seasons in charge, Keefe has delivered ten trophies to the Giants out of a possible 19, including the Grand Slam in 2023 as his all-conquering side swept all before them to secure League, Challenge Cup and Play-Off glory. Last season the Brampton, Ontario native led the Giants to their fourth League title under his stewardship, winning a dramatic final day race to clinch the crown, as well as a fifth Cup, and is now preparing to take the team into the Champions League for the fourth time next season. And on Sunday he will be honoured not just with the jersey retirement but with his testimonial game which features a plethora of friends and former team-mates, who will gather at the SSE Arena to celebrate a remarkable career in Belfast. Keefe's name will join a list of legends whose jerseys hang from the bridge already, the likes of Todd Kelman, Colin Shields and Graeme Walton already immortalised - and now the Giants' "heartbeat" joins them. Not just the team's coach, Keefe has now built his life in Northern Ireland having married wife Colleen, with the couple welcoming their daughter Cora in 2021.

Newport weekend round-up: Pirates in the Port, gigs, theatre

New York Classical Theatre kicks off its free Shakespeare plays in Central Park next week
Clear your evening plans: New York Classical Theatre is returning to Central Park for its 26th season, and they're bringing one of Shakespeare's most overlooked comedies with them. All's Well That Ends Well opens Tuesday, June 3, at the West 103rd Street entrance to the park, offering a rare chance to catch this twisty, witty tale of love, ambition and unexpected redemption, with no ticket required. Directed by NY Classical's founding artistic director Stephen Burdman, the production stays true to the company's signature approach: free, fast-moving and totally accessible. You can show up any night (except Mondays) through June 22 and catch professional Off-Broadway-caliber performances under the open sky. There are no seats, no stage and no boundaries between cast and audience—just a story unfolding around you in real time. This year's cast includes Anique Clements as the determined heroine Helena and Paul Deo Jr. as Bertram, her reluctant love interest, alongside Carine Montbertrand, Karel Heřmánek and others. It's a spirited lineup that blends returning favorites with fresh talent, all performing for and with the city that raised them. And while the Bard is the main event, this season also adds some delightful extras. On Dog Night (June 4), you're invited to bring your pup, pose for pics in matching ruffs and snag some free swag. Family Nights on June 12 and 21 include pre-show crafts, crowns and circus performers to entertain younger theatergoers.
