2024 was Apple's year for advertising—or was it?
The first iteration of Brand New World was a very specific look at how AI is changing how brands and marketers work. Now we're back to talk about brand culture more broadly. Of course that will involve AI from time to time, but I'll also be digging into sports, entertainment, music, comedy, and everywhere else brands squeeze their way into pop culture. Everyone says they hate advertising, but everyone loves at least one brand. Brand New World is here to talk about why. That means I'll be popping up in your feed once every month as part of the Fast Company Podcast Network. Okay, here's what you'll hear on the first episode of season two. Apple's big (creative) year For those who don't know or are unfamiliar, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is part awards show, part industry conference, and probably the biggest annual gathering of brands, marketers, entertainment folks, tech folks, and media on the planet. Anything and anyone that touches a brand—from social platforms to sports stars and celebrities—is there. This year, ahead of the festival that kicks off June 16, Apple has been named the Creative Marketer of the Year. Now, Apple is an iconic marketer, an all-time, first ballot Hall of Famer. But in my opinion, 2024 has been a bit of a mixed bag. So why is this Apple's year? To discuss where this past year fits in the pantheon of Apple's greatest hits, I called up Elizabeth Paul. A strategist by trade, Paul is the chief brand officer at award-winning ad shop the Martin Agency. You'll know their work for major brands like Geico, UPS, the new Axe work with Pete Davidson, and much more. More importantly, she's always up for some hot take banter about the work and culture around advertising and brands. Paul told me when she was rewatching a lot of Apple's 2024 work, she kept thinking about whether any of it would fit into her top 5 list of Apple's all-time work. 'Is there anything this year that would dislodge something else that I've loved for a long time?' she says. 'I would say the thing that got closest to me was 'Someday,' which is beautifully done and really powerful.' Listen to the podcast to hear us break down our top 5 lists of all-time Apple ads. Driving brand entertainment Last month, a new doc called The Seat debuted on Netflix about how Mercedes' Formula One team decided on a successor for racing legend Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton had announced his departure, so the racing giant was forced to strategize its next move quickly and discreetly. That's where WhatsApp comes in. The entire process of evaluating and naming young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli played out over the messaging app. The Seat is not only a feature documentary, but an excellent piece of brand entertainment, produced in partnership with WhatsApp. This episode I was excited to chat with Meta's head of global consumer marketing Eshan Ponnadurai to talk about the process behind the doc, as well as the role it plays in the brand's overall strategy. Esh has worked on major brands from Ford and P&G, to Uber, YouTube and Google. He's got a long history of finding compelling and authentic brand stories to tell in unique ways. Here, we find out what The Seat takes from past successful work, particularly WhatsApp's award-winning doc work We Are Ayenda, and its Giannis Antetokounmpo film Ugo: A Homecoming Story, as well as the precedent it sets for the future. 'The primary thing was knowing what people are going to be interested in,' says Ponnadurai. ''How did you get to this driver? Why him? What's his story?' That's the hook. That's what people are tuning in for. And then organically, how does WhatsApp play a role here? So I think the balance is always (between) what is the right story and what people are interested in, and where the product naturally fits. The danger sometimes can be the inverse: 'We wanna sell you something, where's the story?''

The 12 best things to stream this weekend, from season 2 of 'Poker Face' to the return of Conan O'Brien's travel series
Netflix's new documentary "The Seat" shows how Kimi Antonelli became the third-youngest rookie ever in Formula 1 history. The most recent season of Netflix's popular docuseries "Drive to Survive" featured an abbreviated version of how Formula 1 racing team Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS selected Kimi Antonelli to replace Lewis Hamilton following the seven-time F1 world champion's surprising exit. "The Seat," a 40-minute documentary sponsored by WhatsApp, gives a more detailed look at the behind-the-scenes conversations that went into giving Hamilton's coveted spot to a teenager who had never driven in F1. NASCAR fans can check out season two of "Full Speed." The five-episode season follows the 16 NASCAR Cup Series drivers during the high-stakes 2024 playoffs. "Karol G: Tomorrow Was Beautiful" chronicles Grammy winner Karol G's rise to global superstardom. The documentary gives fans an intimate look into the life of the Colombian singer's obstacles and accomplishments, including being the first Latina to headline venues like the MetLife Stadium and the Gillette Stadium during her Mañana Será Bonito Tour. Food and family are at the heart of the dramedy "Nonnas." Vince Vaughn plays a grieving son who honors his late mom by opening an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as the chefs, allowing them to share their traditional dishes with others. The film is loosely based on the true story of Joe Scaravella, who opened the Staten Island restaurant called Enoteca Maria after his mother's death and employed several grandmothers from different parts of Italy to cook regional food. Conan O'Brien embarks on more globe-trotting adventures in season two of "Conan O'Brien Must Go." In season two of the Emmy-winning travel series, comedian and former late-night host is joined by familiar faces like Taika Waititi and Javier Bardem as he immerses himself in the cultures of New Zealand, Spain, and Austria. The three-episode season premiered on Thursday. The remaining two episodes will be released weekly, culminating in the season finale on May 22. Actor and comedian David Spade's fourth comedy special, "David Spade: Dandelion," has arrived. Three years after his last stand-up special, Spade is back. This time, he jokes about the evolution of porn, being served Pepsi instead of Coke at a casino, and a near-tussle at a McDonald's in Hollywood that inspired the name of his special. "Poker Face" returned for season two this week. The series, created by " Knives Out" writer and director Rian Johnson, is back for another season, starring Natasha Lyonne's casino worker and crime-solver Charlie Cale, who has a knack for detecting lies. Cynthia Erivo, John Mulaney, John Cho, Katie Holmes, and Giancarlo Esposito are among this season's long list of guest stars. "Summer of '69" follows an awkward high school senior trying to seduce her longtime crush before graduation. Comedic actor Jillian Bell's feature film debut stars " That '90s Show" actor Sam Morelos as Abby, a high schooler who sets out to reel in her newly single crush named Max (Matt Cornett). Lacking sexual experience, she turns to an exotic dancer named Santa Monica (Chloe Fineman) to be her mentor. "Forever," Judy Blume's best-selling 1975 novel about young love, is reimagined in a new series. The coming-of-age show is set in Los Angeles in 2018 and follows two Black teens, Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.), who fall in love and navigate relationship milestones together. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan becomes a leading man in "Love Hurts." Ke Huy Quan, known for supporting roles in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and season two of Marvel's "Loki," takes center stage in this 2025 action comedy. The actor stars as Marvin Gable, a top-selling real estate agent whose dark past as a hitman comes back to haunt him when his brother sends assassins to hunt him down. "A Deadly American Marriage" investigates a love story gone wrong. "A Deadly American Marriage" focuses on the gruesome death of Jason Corbett, who was killed by his wife, Molly Martens Corbett, and her father, Thomas Martens, a former FBI agent, in 2015. Molly and Thomas, who said they acted in self-defense, were convicted of second-degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison. The verdict was overturned after an appeal, and the pair were granted a retrial. In 2023, they accepted a plea deal on charges of voluntary manslaughter. Molly and Thomas were released from prison in 2024 after serving four years total. The true-crime documentary explores the different perspectives on the murder and features interviews with people affected, including Molly, Thomas, and Jason's kids from his first marriage, Jack and Sarah. For a reality TV fix, watch the "Vanderpump Villa" season two reunion special.

F1 Miami GP LIVE: Race start time and schedule after Max Verstappen takes pole and Lewis Hamilton goes out in Q2
Max Verstappen took pole in a close qualifying session at the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday as Oscar Piastri finished outside the top three for the first time this season. The Australian was fourth, with Lando Norris backing up his win in Saturday's sprint with second, only 0.065s off Verstappen's pace. Teenager Kimi Antonelli sprung the surprise of the season so far by taking pole position for Saturday's sprint race in Miami and continued his brilliant rookie campaign with third place in qualifying, 0.002s shy of Norris. But it was a dismal afternoon for Lewis Hamilton, who dropped from third in the sprint to 11th in qualifying as he went out in Q2 for the first time at Ferrari. His teammate Charles Leclerc fared little better as both drivers struggled with their cars, with the Monegasque qualifying ninth. Three races, two teams – but F1 in the United States is still missing one key component The sorry sight of Floridian youngster Logan Sargeant trudging away from his burning Williams car last summer at the Dutch Grand Prix represented his final failed foray in Formula One. Quickly axed by team principal James Vowles, Sargeant lost his F1 seat after 36 races and one point. In doing so, a rare US presence among the 20-driver grid was no more. Since Mario Andretti won the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix – the same year he claimed his sole F1 world championship, America's only title to this day – no US driver has won a race. In fact, in the 47 years since, only Eddie Cheever in the 1980s has recorded more than one podium. Sargeant's only point, awarded post-race in Austin in 2023, was America's first point in the drivers' standings since Mario's son, Michael, finished third in Monza in 1994. A puzzling record, you may think, for a sport which has in the last decade boomed almost unfathomably across the Atlantic. Miami, which debuted in 2022 a year ahead of the Las Vegas night race, hosts its fourth edition this weekend with its typical high-octane offering of sunshine, showbiz and style. The missing piece for F1 in the US despite three races and two teams Miami hosts round six of the 2025 F1 season, but will have no American driver present on the grid Flo Clifford4 May 2025 05:00 Mercedes announce release of Kimi Antonelli 'The Seat' documentary on Netflix Mercedes have announced a new documentary, titled 'The Seat', that will air on Netflix next week, charting Kimi Antonelli 's promotion to a race seat at the team in 2025. The 45-minute documentary will reveal the 'private conversations' between Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and 18-year-old Italian prodigy Antonelli last year, leading to the teenager taking Lewis Hamilton 's seat at the Silver Arrows. Flo Clifford4 May 2025 04:00 F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season. Mexico City 's previous deal with the sport expired after this year's race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year's grid. But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era. Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season. Flo Clifford4 May 2025 03:00 George Russell on prospect of FIA swearing rules changing: 'We want to see these things put into action rather than saying 'we're considering things,'' Russell said. 'You know, we all consider a lot of things. 'We're clear we want changes and once they are implemented then we'll comment. But for the time being, it's being considered. So those words don't mean anything until the change has been made.' Flo Clifford4 May 2025 02:00 Stefano Domenicali on Miami's new deal until 2041: 'We believe that the credibility and multiplicity to make sure that we stay here for a long time can be the right story to be relevant, and that's what we need to do in this market, because, as I said, we are growing, but we are still small. 'We want to think bigger and bigger. '[This event] could be one of the most important pillars for our growth in this country' Flo Clifford4 May 2025 01:00 Miami signs new 10-year contract extension! Formula One has announced a record long contract with the Miami Grand Prix until at least the 2041 season. The 10-year extension, with the previous deal expiring in 2031, was announced on Friday ahead of the 2025 event starting at Miami Gardens. It is now F1 's longest current contract with a grand prix, with Australia the nearest now with a deal until 2037. Flo Clifford4 May 2025 00:30 Contrasting fortunes for Mercedes Kimi Antonelli said he wanted to bounce back from losing pole in the sprint race and he certainly did that, qualifying third-quickest on Saturday. 'Really really happy with how every weekend I'm more with the car and trying to explore the limit as well. And so far this weekend, I felt really good in the car. So that's definitely a positive,' the 18-year-old said. Compare that to teammate George Russell, who was fifth in qualifying, his worst result of the season, and said on race radio through qualy that he had 'no confidence' in the car. Flo Clifford3 May 2025 23:50 'Far too early' to think about championship - Piastri 'I will still try to get as many points as I can,' Piastri says when asked about the drivers' championship. 'It's far too early to start thinking about the championship, so I will try to make up as many places as I can but just to get a good result tomorrow over anything else.' Flo Clifford3 May 2025 23:40 Piastri 'couldn't get into the rhythm' in Q3 'I fell out of the rhythm a little bit,' Oscar Piastri (qualified fourth) says. 'My best lap of qualifying was the first lap of Q2. I peaked a bit early. 'I couldn't get into the rhythm in Q3. The car was great and deserved more but both laps in Q3 were quite scruffy. That's the price you pay." 'It's going to be tight at the front [in the race]. We saw how close qualifying was and it's going to be tough to make progress. 'I think you can, and the weather is not that straightforward, so I think we can make progress but it will be difficult.' Flo Clifford3 May 2025 23:30 'His ability to focus is insane' - Horner 'He's walking a step higher and becoming a father, welcome a beautiful little girl into the world is a massive thing,' Horner continues. 'But we see time and time again, when he crosses that line into the garage and puts his helmet on, everything disappears. His ability to focus and deliver is insane. It's really truly impressive.'

F1 Miami GP LIVE: Sprint race updates with teen star Kimi Antonelli on pole position
Teenager Kimi Antonelli sprung the surprise of the season so far by taking pole position for Saturday's sprint race in Miami. The 18-year-old Italian, just six rounds into his rookie campaign as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, saw off championship leader Oscar Piastri by just 0.045 seconds at the Hard Rock Stadium. Piastri's McLaren team-mate Lando Norris finished third, 0.100 sec behind Antonelli, with Max Verstappen fourth and Antonelli's Mercedes team-mate George Russell in fifth. Happy to get a good lap in there, not much more I could ask for. 'I'm concentrating on this weekend, today was in the right ballpark. A bit of a job to do for the sprint race but close enough that we can aim for pole tomorrow.' Flo Clifford3 May 2025 16:35 Oscar Piastri after qualifying P2: 'Reasonably happy, wasn't the best lap ever - had a lock-up into the last corner which is probably where pole went away. All in all, pretty happy. 'Feeling positive still, will try and make up a spot tomorrow in the sprint.' Flo Clifford3 May 2025 16:25 Kimi Antonelli after his pole position: 'I did not see that coming, to be honest. I was happy with the lap, there were still a few bits were I could have done a bit better.' 'I will enjoy this moment a bit more, but focus on tomorrow – it would be good to repeat ourselves. The win? 'It's a big, big target. I think we're pretty close, it'll be important tomorrow to have a good start. 'Every weekend I'm learning massively. Having a break helped me gather more information, recharging the batteries. The whole qualifying I felt like making a step. On family: 'Really nice moment to share all together, I can always rely on my Dad and so nice to share this moment with him.' Flo Clifford3 May 2025 16:15 Kimi Antonelli takes shock maiden F1 pole for Miami GP sprint Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli became the youngest-ever pole sitter in Formula 1 history and will start from the front in the sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix.
