F1 Miami GP LIVE: Race start time and schedule after Max Verstappen takes pole and Lewis Hamilton goes out in Q2

Independent04-05-2025
Max Verstappen took pole in a close qualifying session at the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday as Oscar Piastri finished outside the top three for the first time this season.
The Australian was fourth, with Lando Norris backing up his win in Saturday's sprint with second, only 0.065s off Verstappen's pace.
Teenager Kimi Antonelli sprung the surprise of the season so far by taking pole position for Saturday's sprint race in Miami and continued his brilliant rookie campaign with third place in qualifying, 0.002s shy of Norris.
But it was a dismal afternoon for Lewis Hamilton, who dropped from third in the sprint to 11th in qualifying as he went out in Q2 for the first time at Ferrari. His teammate Charles Leclerc fared little better as both drivers struggled with their cars, with the Monegasque qualifying ninth.
Three races, two teams – but F1 in the United States is still missing one key component
The sorry sight of Floridian youngster Logan Sargeant trudging away from his burning Williams car last summer at the Dutch Grand Prix represented his final failed foray in Formula One. Quickly axed by team principal James Vowles, Sargeant lost his F1 seat after 36 races and one point. In doing so, a rare US presence among the 20-driver grid was no more.
Since Mario Andretti won the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix – the same year he claimed his sole F1 world championship, America's only title to this day – no US driver has won a race. In fact, in the 47 years since, only Eddie Cheever in the 1980s has recorded more than one podium. Sargeant's only point, awarded post-race in Austin in 2023, was America's first point in the drivers' standings since Mario's son, Michael, finished third in Monza in 1994.
A puzzling record, you may think, for a sport which has in the last decade boomed almost unfathomably across the Atlantic. Miami, which debuted in 2022 a year ahead of the Las Vegas night race, hosts its fourth edition this weekend with its typical high-octane offering of sunshine, showbiz and style.

F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver
F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season.
Mexico City 's previous deal with the sport expired after this year's race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year's grid.
But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era.
Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season.

George Russell on prospect of FIA swearing rules changing:
'We want to see these things put into action rather than saying 'we're considering things,'' Russell said.
'You know, we all consider a lot of things.
'We're clear we want changes and once they are implemented then we'll comment. But for the time being, it's being considered. So those words don't mean anything until the change has been made.'

Stefano Domenicali on Miami's new deal until 2041:
'We believe that the credibility and multiplicity to make sure that we stay here for a long time can be the right story to be relevant, and that's what we need to do in this market, because, as I said, we are growing, but we are still small.
'We want to think bigger and bigger.
'[This event] could be one of the most important pillars for our growth in this country'

Miami signs new 10-year contract extension!
Formula One has announced a record long contract with the Miami Grand Prix until at least the 2041 season.
The 10-year extension, with the previous deal expiring in 2031, was announced on Friday ahead of the 2025 event starting at Miami Gardens.
It is now F1 's longest current contract with a grand prix, with Australia the nearest now with a deal until 2037.

Contrasting fortunes for Mercedes
Kimi Antonelli said he wanted to bounce back from losing pole in the sprint race and he certainly did that, qualifying third-quickest on Saturday.
'Really really happy with how every weekend I'm more with the car and trying to explore the limit as well. And so far this weekend, I felt really good in the car. So that's definitely a positive,' the 18-year-old said.
Compare that to teammate George Russell, who was fifth in qualifying, his worst result of the season, and said on race radio through qualy that he had 'no confidence' in the car.

'Far too early' to think about championship - Piastri
'I will still try to get as many points as I can,' Piastri says when asked about the drivers' championship.
'It's far too early to start thinking about the championship, so I will try to make up as many places as I can but just to get a good result tomorrow over anything else.'

Piastri 'couldn't get into the rhythm' in Q3
'I fell out of the rhythm a little bit,' Oscar Piastri (qualified fourth) says. 'My best lap of qualifying was the first lap of Q2. I peaked a bit early.
'I couldn't get into the rhythm in Q3. The car was great and deserved more but both laps in Q3 were quite scruffy. That's the price you pay."
'It's going to be tight at the front [in the race]. We saw how close qualifying was and it's going to be tough to make progress.
'I think you can, and the weather is not that straightforward, so I think we can make progress but it will be difficult.'

'His ability to focus is insane' - Horner
'He's walking a step higher and becoming a father, welcome a beautiful little girl into the world is a massive thing,' Horner continues.
'But we see time and time again, when he crosses that line into the garage and puts his helmet on, everything disappears. His ability to focus and deliver is insane. It's really truly impressive.'

Tommy Fury finally reveals truth behind his Jake Paul rematch snub

The two boxing stars have been teasing a rematch ever since they first went head-to-head in Saudi Arabia back in 2023 Tommy Fury has admitted he turned down a rematch with Jake Paul, stating his desire for at least two or three warm-up bouts first. ‌ The pair initially squared off in Saudi Arabia back in 2023, where despite being knocked down in the final round, Fury emerged victorious on points. Since then, there's been plenty of verbal sparring between the two, fuelling speculation about a potential rematch, but nothing has come to fruition so far. ‌ In the new BBC iPlayer documentary series "Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury", the 26 year old boxer explains why he declined a rematch with Paul, which was scheduled for June 28. Instead, 'Problem Child' Paul went on to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., failing to secure a knockout but still sailing to a points victory. ‌ During one episode, Fury Snr receives a call from family lawyer Robert, who queries whether his son would be prepared for a rematch with Paul on June 28th. "Listen, that is the oldest trick isn't it?" retorts Fury Snr, reports All Out Fighting. "Tommy has not boxed in 18 months." The camera then cuts to a solo interview with Tommy's father, who asserts: "My job as a father is to get the right opponent. Get him in the ring. Get some rounds under our belt. Get the hand tested and see where we go from there." The video then cuts back to the family gathered around the campfire, with Fury Snr still engaged in a phone call. He continued to tell his lawyer: "I think the answer on that one is going to be no, Robert. We want to be ready and we just want to beat these guys." After rejecting the rematch, Fury sought his father's opinion. A rather stern Fury Snr responded: "They are trying to get you at your worst possible time. They are thinking 'he has had an 18 month lay off, come off hand surgery, how good can he be?'" The scene concludes with 'TNT' disclosing that he needs a few more bouts before facing his adversary again. "It'll be interesting to know how much they were offering. I know myself that I need two or three fights," he stated. Earlier in April, Fury was accused by Paul's promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian of declining "multiple offers" to square off with the American once more. In a chat with The Sun, Bidarian claimed: "Tommy was offered an unbelievable deal to headline versus Jake on Netflix and they had a false sense of expectations. Jake's not gonna ever offer him that kind of money again. Now if Tommy Fury showed up and said, 'Jake, here is $20million to fight me and I'm gonna make $20million.' Right, all the power to you. "But they've never made an offer once. And we've made multiple offers to try to make that rematch happen. And if you're very confident that you're gonna be Jake Paul, you should have jumped at the opportunity to fight him for $6million plus upside on Netflix. It's just beyond ridiculous that they didn't." ‌ When is Tommy Fury's next fight? Fury stepped back into the ring in May for the first time in nearly two years, securing a points victory over Kenan Hanjalic. Since that bout, he's been locked in a war of words with Paul regarding a possible rematch. The British fighter recently delivered a blunt message to the 'Problem Child,' telling Boxing Social: "If I were to fight him, which I think will 100 per cent happen, then he has got to stop talking b****** like he is every single day on Twitter. He is offering stupid numbers that are not realistic. He thinks because he has got a few followers on Instagram and YouTube that he can call the shots, but if you want to come into a sport where we fight, then none of that matters. You lost, I won. So let's talk some realistic numbers." He added: "At the end of the day, I am not unreasonable. He's going on about earning X amount; okay, then let's be fair and go down the middle. And if you don't want to go right down the middle, then give me what I am asking for because at the end of the day, you lost and I won."

McLaren ‘explosion' predicted with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri battling for F1 title

Ex- McLaren driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes the team will 'explode' this season as their drivers battle for their first F1 world championship. Oscar Piastri leads Lando Norris by nine points with 10 races left of the 2025 season. The sport returns to action after the summer break next week with the Dutch Grand Prix, a race Norris won last year. The two drivers have fought respectfully so far this season and have only collided once in Canada, an incident Norris took full blame for, and avoided a clash at the last race in Hungary despite a late tussle for the lead. Yet seven-time grand prix winner Montoya, who raced for McLaren from 2005-2006, can see a crash occurring on track given the stakes at the papaya outfit this year. 'The McLaren group is in a groove, it's peace and love and everybody's happy and we're best friends and we hold hands when we go racing together,' said Montoya. 'But if I was a betting person, there's going to be an explosion at McLaren at some stage. 'It is a world championship they are fighting for. When was the last time McLaren had a world champion? 2008 with Lewis. They have the constructors in the bag. And they want to let the drivers race. And they want to see fair racing. 'The question for me is sooner or later they are going to end up crashing. You are going to get to the situation where because they are so close in points, every position will matter. It will get to the point where you will be better off crashing with your team-mate rather than losing the points to win a championship. 'When we come to the last few races, and one guy is five points ahead and he passes you, and it means a swing in points, somebody is going to do something crazy.' Montoya added that Norris and Piastri may only have one opportunity to win the world championship, given the change in regulations for next year could shake-up the pecking order. 'It doesn't how good the relationship is or might be,' Montoya, speaking in association with CoinPoker, added. 'This is one rare opportunity that they will have of being world champion. 'Let's say Lando was behind and is about to win the title if he wins the last race, do you think Oscar is going to race him clean? There's no f****** way. 'If the regulations were the same next year, I think the approach might be different. But with the new regulations being so dramatically different, and there's no guarantee that the car is going to be competitive next year. 'This might be the only chance for them in their careers to be a world champion.'

How will David Gray's Hibs line up for Legia Euro clash at Easter Road? Predicted XI

The stakes involved make everything just that little bit trickier, of course. Which isn't what David Gray wanted to hear, as he and his coaching brains trust settled down to select a starting XI for tonight's UEFA Conference League play-off at home to Legia Warsaw. The task facing the Hibs management team was already tough enough – in a very, very good way – without factoring in the pressure of knowing that every decision carries so much weight. There is little room for error against Legia Warsaw, who reached the quarter-finals of this competition last season. And yet … oh, this is most definitely a winnable tie. As he looks to put Hibs in European group/league phase football for the first time in club history, Gray will be more than comforted by the fact that he now boasts the strongest squad – in terms of depth – since he took over the top job in the summer of 2024. With only club captain Joe Newell definitely out of contention as he works his way back from a long-term groin/abdominal injury, the Easter Road side are positively awash with talent ahead of the home leg against Legia. Sunday's more-than-comfortable away win over top-flight rivals Livingston, Hibs advancing to a Premier Sports Cup quarter-final tie against Rangers at Ibrox with plenty to spare, was notable because of the six changes Gray made to his starting XI. As he pointed out yesterday, he's now got half a dozen players claiming – with some justification – that they've done enough to stay in the team for tonight. In truth, he's more likely to stick with the guys who have carried Hibs this far. More or less. While feeling pretty good about his options from the bench, especially now that record signing Thibault Klidje has found some form – and not forgetting the instant impact of new midfielder Miguel Chaiwa. Everything about this fixture means there will be extra interest in the official team lines when they get announced at about 6.45 pm. This is how we THINK Hibs will line up … 1 . GK Jordan Smith Jeez, start with the easy one, eh? Raphael Sallinger probably didn't have enough to do against Livingston to make a convincing argument to take over as No.1. Even if Smith had an, erm, eventful night against Partizan last week. A genuine 50-50 call, though. One of several. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . RCB Warren O'Hora There is maybe an option to put Grant Hanley in here, although the vastly experienced Scotland international actually 'deputised' for Rocky Bushiri in the centre of the back three against Livi. But O'Hora looks like the stick-on in this role. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . CB Rocky Bushiri Don't even think about it. And don't bet against him enjoying another big moment in a tie of enormous significance. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . LCB Jack Iredale, Hibernian The Australian is integral to how Hibs play, with his adaptability meaning they can defend in a three, four or five according to where the ball and opposition are on the field. Gives the wingback freedom to attack. | AP Photo Sales Related topics: Uefa Conference League
