Three-time Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro's longtime passion project is showing its first signs of life. The Shape of Water writer-director unveiled his take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein during Netflix's Tudum event on Saturday, showing off an eerie first teaser trailer. Rounding out the cast are two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz and Game of Thrones alums Charles Dance, David Bradley, and Ralph Ineson. The atmospheric two-minute, 23-second clip features Isaac in voiceover recounting "the memory of my evils" amid shots of his Victor Frankenstein robbing graves and desecrating corpses to assemble his creature. "In seeking life," the scientist intones, "I created death." At the trailer's conclusion we catch a glimpse of the shrouded creature as it lays waste to a group of vigilantes and shouts, "Victor!" The project is one of two major Frankenstein film projects coming in the next year. Maggie Gyllenhaal's follow-up to The Lost Daughter, The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Penélope Cruz, is set for release next March. Del Toro's adaptation, however, is one he has been talking about making for nearly 20 years, publicly declaring the Shelley novel to be his favorite book. Always a fan of monsters — especially those in the Universal canon — del Toro crafted an awards juggernaut riffing on The Creature From the Black Lagoon with The Shape of Water. More recently, he crossed over into the world of stop-motion animation with Pinocchio, another Netflix production, which earned him his third Oscar for Best Animated Film. Before that, he explored some of the more mystical corners of noir with Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara. Guillermo Del Toro's ‘Frankenstein' Debuts First Teaser At Netflix Tudum
Netflix on Saturday unveiled the first teaser trailer for Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro's long-in-the works adaptation of the 1818 literary classic from Mary Shelley, which is slated for release this November. In the upcoming film, Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature (Jacob Elordi) to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. At Tudum, he called it 'the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,' adding, 'Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein through my films.' Del Toro also touched on the importance of Shelley's work to his career in 2018, while accepting the BAFTA Award for Best Director for The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins. 'The most important figure from English legacy is, incredibly, for me, a teenager by the name of Mary Shelley, and she has remained a figure as important in my life as if she were family,' he said. 'And so many times when I want to give up, when I think about giving up, when people tell me that dreaming of the movies and the stories I dream are impossible, I think of her.' Coming off his third Oscar win for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, another literary adaptation for Netflix, Del Toro's Frankenstein also stars Mia Goth (X), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds). Del Toro directed from his own script and produced alongside longtime collaborator J. Miles Dale and Scott Stuber. Netflix debuted the teaser for Frankenstein during Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event, a preview of its upcoming slate streamed live from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Other films teased today included Happy Gilmore 2, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and The RIP. Check out Del Toro's latest above. Foster mom fosters nightmares in ‘Bring Her Back'
What's the opposite of a Venn diagram overlap? Whatever it is, 'Bring Her Back' is the film equivalent, with two potential audiences that might cancel each other out. Fans of horror movies that work your every last nerve may not appreciate the casting of the great British actress Sally Hawkins as a foster parent with a devilish agenda. By contrast, fans of Hawkins's work in art-house crowd-pleasers like 'Maudie' and 'Happy-Go-Lucky' — or even mainstream fare like 'The Shape of Water' and the first two 'Paddington' movies — may run screaming from the theater.

New ‘Frankenstein' will be no horror flick, Del Toro says
The Mexican director of 'Hellboy' and 'The Shape of Water' says 'Frankenstein' will not be a creature feature but one with real heart. (AFP pic) CANNES : Triple Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro said his new version of 'Frankenstein' will not be a horror film, but will instead pack a high-voltage emotional punch. The Mexican director of 'Hellboy' and 'The Shape of Water' said the new movie would not be a creature feature but one with real heart. 'I'm not making a horror movie, never,' he said at an event at the Cannes film festival Sunday. 'For me, it's an incredibly emotional film, as personal as everything else I've done… It's about being a father, being a son.' 'I believe emotion is the new punk,' Del Toro added, saying that 'people don't take risks like we do' and that there was no shame in 'being extremely emotional'. The Netflix drama starring 'Saltburn' heartthrob Jacob Elordi is to be released in December. Del Toro was speaking during a conversation with the French composer Alexandre Desplat at the festival. They have worked together on several occasions, including 'The Shape of Water' in 2017, for which they both won Oscars – Del Toro for directing and Desplat for the soundtrack.
