CANNES : Triple Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro said his new version of 'Frankenstein' will not be a horror film, but will instead pack a high-voltage emotional punch.
The Mexican director of 'Hellboy' and 'The Shape of Water' said the new movie would not be a creature feature but one with real heart.
'I'm not making a horror movie, never,' he said at an event at the Cannes film festival Sunday. 'For me, it's an incredibly emotional film, as personal as everything else I've done… It's about being a father, being a son.'
'I believe emotion is the new punk,' Del Toro added, saying that 'people don't take risks like we do' and that there was no shame in 'being extremely emotional'.
The Netflix drama starring 'Saltburn' heartthrob Jacob Elordi is to be released in December.
Del Toro was speaking during a conversation with the French composer Alexandre Desplat at the festival.
They have worked together on several occasions, including 'The Shape of Water' in 2017, for which they both won Oscars – Del Toro for directing and Desplat for the soundtrack.

Too fabulous? ‘Aggressive' minority forces Paris suburb to nix ‘Barbie' movie night using gay promotion claim

PARIS, Aug 16 — An open-air screening of Greta Gerwig's blockbuster Barbie in Noisy-le-Sec, Seine-Saint-Denis, was abruptly cancelled last night after a group of youths threatened municipal workers and vowed to stop the film, prompting the mayor to call off the event for safety reasons. The threats occurred in the Londeau neighbourhood where the film was set to be shown as part of Est Ensemble's summer programming at nightfall, French news site Le Parisien reported. Mayor Olivier Sarrabeyrouse (PCF) revealed the cancellation on social media, explaining that aggressive youth had threatened to prevent the screening and destroy the equipment. The mayor reported that opponents claimed the film 'promotes homosexuality and is an attack on women's integrity,' which he dismissed as 'fallacious arguments.' City staff attempted to negotiate with the protesters but were forced to contact the mayor when the situation became increasingly aggressive and they felt endangered. Local resident Marie-Jeanne confirmed the confrontation, noting that staff told protesters it would be 'Barbie or nothing,' resulting in the cancellation when no alternative film could be arranged. The film had been democratically selected through a public vote where 214 residents participated, with 'Barbie' receiving 33 votes citywide and 13 votes in the Londeau neighbourhood specifically. Opposition politician Jean-Paul Lefebvre criticised the film choice as 'surprising' and suggested the incident represented 'a mark of rebellion against the mayor.' Mayor Sarrabeyrouse condemned what he called a 'censorship committee within the housing estate' and pointed out that 'Barbie' has never been banned in France. The mayor announced he would file a police complaint over the threats and declared 'I will not give in' to such intimidation tactics.

Cape off, badge on: Former Superman actor Dean Cain to be sworn in as ICE agent

LOS ANGELES, Aug 8 — Dean Cain is taking his hero act from Metropolis to the US-Mexico border. The former Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star is set to be sworn in as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, the BBC reported today — joining one of the most controversial law enforcement agencies in the United States. Cain, who played TV's Superman from 1993 to 1997, told Fox News yesterday: 'I will be sworn in as an ICE agent asap.' Already a sworn deputy sheriff and reserve police officer, he said the move came after his recruitment video for ICE went viral. 'I wasn't part of ICE, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy,' he explained. According to the BBC, the Department of Homeland Security will officially make him an 'honorary ICE Officer' next month. DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin hailed the signing, saying: 'Superman is encouraging Americans to become real-life superheroes by answering their country's call to join the brave men and women of ICE to help protect our communities to arrest the worst of the worst.' Cain says it's about stepping up. 'People have to step up. I'm stepping up,' he told Fox News. 'Hopefully a whole bunch of other former officers, former ICE agents will step up, and we'll meet those recruitment goals immediately and we'll help protect this country.' The BBC notes that ICE is in the middle of a massive hiring spree — looking for 10,000 more personnel to double its ranks. The roles go beyond deportation officers, with openings for attorneys, criminal investigators and student visa adjudicators. To sweeten the deal, the agency is offering up to US$50,000 (RM211,465) in bonuses and student loan help. The push is part of US President Donald Trump's pledge to increase deportations to one million a year, a promise that's brought an uptick in immigration raids — and nationwide protests from critics who call them unlawful. In true Hollywood style, the recruitment campaign comes with old-school propaganda posters. Think World War Two designs, stamped with 'America Needs You' and 'Defend the Homeland' alongside images of Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other officials. By Wednesday, Noem told Fox News the campaign had pulled in over 80,000 applications — with ICE even scrapping the age limit to boost numbers. With Cain's induction next month, the man who once fought TV villains as Superman will be joining the real-life front line of US immigration enforcement — a role far removed from the red cape, but one that's already making headlines.

Michael Jackson's dirty sock sells for over US$8,000

The 'Beat It' and 'Bad' pop star died in 2009 from a drug-induced cardiac arrest. (AFP pic) MARSEILLE : A single glittery sock that late pop superstar Michael Jackson wore during a concert in France in the 1990s sold for more than US$8,000 on Wednesday, a French auctioneer said. A technician found the used sock discarded near Jackson's dressing room after the concert in the southern city of Nimes in July 1997, auctioneer Aurore Illy told AFP. The self-styled 'King of Pop' wore white athletic socks adorned with rhinestones during his 'HIStory World Tour' in 1997, according to specialist website Jackson can be seen wearing them in clips of him performing his hit 'Billie Jean'. Decades later, the off-white item of clothing is covered in stains, and the rhinestones adorning it have yellowed with age, in a picture posted on the website. 'It really is an exceptional object – even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,' Illy said. The sock, initially valued at 3,000 to 4,000 euros, sold for 7,688 euros at the Nimes auction house. A Macau gaming resort in 2009 paid US$350,000 for a glittery glove Jackson wore when he performed his first 'moonwalk' dance in 1983. A hat he wore just before that performance sold for more than US$80,000 in Paris in 2023. Jackson died of a fatal overdose in 2009 aged 50. He still has a huge fan base, despite child molestation accusations against him during his lifetime and after his death, which he and his estate have denied.
