Punjab outraged over YouTuber Dhruv Rathee's AI depiction of Sikh Gurus

Chandigarh: Prominent YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has come under fire from political leaders in Punjab for allegedly using artificial intelligence to depict Sikh Gurus in a video posted to his channel, prompting accusations of hurting religious sentiments and distorting history. The video — titled 'The Sikh Warrior Who Terrified the Mughals' —was removed after drawing widespread backlash. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) as well as Punjab's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit condemned the content, calling it a violation of Sikh religious principles and a misuse of technology for sensationalism. Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal sent a formal complaint to information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to press for legal action under the Information Technology Act and other laws for "promoting enmity between communities". He also requested that Rathee's accounts be suspended on YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Meta platforms until an investigation was complete. Baliawal wrote: "This video recreated dramatised visuals of our revered Gurus, which is forbidden strictly under Sikh tenets as outlined by the Akal Takht. It distorts history, misleads viewers, and is offensive deeply to Sikhs globally." He has said that sacrificing religious sensitivity for digital popularity undermines national unity and the ethical responsibilities of online creators. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch Bitcoin và Ethereum - Không cần ví! Sukhbir urged content creators to approach religious topics with reverence and accuracy, and demanded the permanent removal of the video. Dhruv Rathee's AI video on Sikh Gurus sparks backlash; SAD, SGPC hit out at YouTuber for ‘misleading narrative'

Day after YouTuber Dhruv Rathee posted an AI-generated video titled 'The Sikh Warrior Who Terrified the Mughals' on Sikh Gurus, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) strongly condemned it, alleging 'misleading narratives'. In a long post on X, Sukhbir Singh Badal said his party 'strongly condemns' the video 'for its inappropriate use of AI-generated visuals depicting our Guru Sahiban besides historical inaccuracies.' 'Such portrayals violate Sikh rehat maryada which prohibits visual representations of Guru Sahiban and have deeply hurt the sentiments of the community. The lack of respectful language and misleading narratives further aggravates this issue.' He said, 'I urge all content creators to exercise utmost caution and sensitivity when producing material related to Guru Sahiban or Sikh history. Respect for religious traditions and accurate historical representation are non-negotiable. I request the immediate removal of the offending content and call for responsible storytelling that honors the sacred legacy of Sikhism.' Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also took to X and demanded removal of the video. In a statement, SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal said the Sikh community does not need for artificial intelligence to interpret or preserve its rich historical legacy. The committee has also urged the government to take action against Dhruv Rathee.
