Rihanna's New Single Launches At A Disappointing Low
Later this summer, Rihanna's new movie The Smurfs will arrive in theaters globally. In addition to voicing one of the Smurfs, the Barbadian pop icon also wrote and performed new music for the film, which seems to be a major selling point for the animated adventure. The first track from the project, a single titled 'Friend of Mine,' debuts on charts all around the world this week. Despite the built-up anticipation for not just this tune, but any work from the superstar, the cut underperforms expectations, especially true in the United Kingdom. 'Friend of Mine' debuts at No. 72 on the Official Singles chart, the tally that ranks the most consumed tracks across several different formats in the nation. That's a very low starting point for a new Rihanna cut — and it's a disappointing peak she hasn't had to settle for in quite a while. Rihanna hasn't seen a track peak that low in almost a decade. The last time one of her songs stalled even lower on the main singles list in the U.K. was in March 2016, when 'Consideration,' her collaboration with SZA featured on Anti, spent one frame at No. 88. Since 'Consideration' debuted, Rihanna has scored some lesser hits and a number of huge wins across the ocean. She added a new No. 1 in June 2017 as a featured act alongside Bryson Tiller on DJ Khaled's 'Wild Thoughts.' She also broke into the top 10 with 'This Is What You Came For' alongside Calvin Harris, 'Too Good' with Drake, and with her own 'Lift Me Up' from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. 'Friend of Mine' opens in similar positions on the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts as well. Rihanna's cut launches at No. 79 on the former and No. 75 on the latter. In both instances, she reaches a milestone number of placements, as the Smurfs cut earns the singer her thirtieth placement on the general sales tally and her seventieth on the list of the most downloaded tunes in the U.K. Rihanna's latest offering debuts highest on the Official Dance Singles chart. The superstar earns her seventh win on that list as 'Friend of Mine' kicks off its time at No. 19.

Watch: 3,076 'Smurfs' come together to break world record in France
May 19 (UPI) -- A small town in France succeeded in its third Guinness World Record attempt by hosting a gathering of 3,076 people dressed as Smurfs. The town of Landerneau, in France's Brittany region, had attempted the world record for the most people dressed as Smurfs twice before, but fell short of the record of 2,762 people, which was set in Germany in 2019. The town made its third attempt Sunday with official backing from Paramount Pictures ahead of the release of the film Smurfs on July 18. The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, aka Peyo, in 1958. They are called "Schtroumpfs" in French. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Smurfs (@smurfsofficial)

Watch: 'Smurfs' trailer features Rihanna song 'Friend of Mine'
May 14 (UPI) -- Paramount Pictures released a trailer for the upcoming Smurfs movie on Wednesday that includes a new song from Rihanna, who also voices Smurfette in the film. When "Friend of Mine" begins, the Smurfs dance, but a spiraling purple cloud disrupts the party. Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is abducted, and Smurfette leads the group that sets out to find him. The song will be included on the movie's soundtrack, which arrives Friday. The film, which also features the voices of Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Mariduena and Kurt Russell, will play in theaters beginning July 18. Characters created by the late Pierre Culliford, widely known as Peyo, served as inspiration for the film. Previous adaptations in the franchise include The Smurfs (2011) and The Smurfs 2 (2013). An earlier teaser for the movie featured Rihanna's hit "Don't Stop the Music," which was featured on her 2007 album Good Girl Gone Bad. The star, 37, recently unveiled her third pregnancy with A$AP Rocky at the Met Gala.

Smurfs Trailer Highlights Rihanna's Smurfette And More, And I'm Smurfing Amused By All The Smurfing Uses Of Smurfing As A Smurfing Verb
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. For decades now, The Smurfs franchise has delighted audiences with its lovable characters and madcap adventures. The endearing and blue, comic book-birthed characters are now set to return to the big screen with a reboot film, which is being headlined by the one and only Rihanna. The pop star plays Smurfette in this 2025 movie schedule entry, and the character has a massive presence in the new trailer. However, what really has me smiling are the various uses of the term 'smurfing' in this fresh batch of footage. Smurfs promises a new take on this tried-and-true film and TV property, one infused with more music than ever before. That's evident very early on in the trailer above, with Smurfette leading the charge. Of course, there's more to the movie than toe-tapping tunes. The titular group must band together to rescue their leader, the affable Papa Smurf, after he's kidnapped by wizards Gargamel and Razamel. What results is a fun and nutty-looking adventure that takes the diminutive do-gooders into the real world. As sweet as it is for me to hear Rihanna's vocals, it's hard not to make note of the various times that a character uses some form of the word smurf. It's sometimes used as a noun but, in other cases, it's conveyed as a verb. What's particularly cheeky is that the filmmakers use it as a substitute for swear words. (I mean, this film is greatly geared towards kids after all.) But, even as an adult, I can't help but snicker any time someone mutters the word. Check out the instances in which it's used in the trailer alone: "What the smurf?" - Smurfette "I think I just smurfed my pants." - Unidentified Smurf "Let's go smurf that wizard up." - Smurfette "What the smurf?" - Turtle "Hold on to your little smurf nose." - Unidentified Snooterpoot Those are just too smurfing good! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) In all honesty, though, that term has long been a hallmark of the franchise, and I'm glad to see it remains in play this time around. If anything, I'd argue that director Chris Miller and writer Pam Brady doubled down on it this time around, given its prevalence in the trailer. I'm curious as to the other ways the word will be used in the film. More on Smurfs I Would Never Have Seen This Smurfin Ridiculous Moment Coming For The Smurfs, But Welcome To The Modern Era It's hard not to take notice of the star power associated with this film, as John Goodman, Nick Offerman, James Corden, Xolo Maridueña, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne and Kurt Russell. Of course, in the lead is Rihanna, who's gone all in on promoting the film, even taking part in an undies campaign. (The blue and white tracksuit she wears in the BTS footage ahead of the trailer is fire as well.) Based on her past comments, the singer enjoyed recording for Smurfs, which she did while pregnant. While Rihanna fans may be waiting for a new album, they can, at the very least, take their kids to the theater to enjoy her vocals in the film. The 'Diamonds' singer is sure to bring plenty of style to the role of Smurfette, and I also imagine that she's going to turn heads on the red carpet while promoting the film. (She is after all the same woman who gave birth while wearing pearls and sunglasses.) Aside from that, don't be surprised if kids start using the word 'smurf' consistently after watching the movie. You can see Rihanna and co. rip it up in Smurfs – and use all the Smurfing references they want – when the film opens in theaters on July 18. In the meantime, you can stream the original live-action/animation hybrid films in the franchise using a Paramount+ subscription.
