WhatsApp deletes 6,800,000 scam accounts offering fake jobs and products

Over 6.8 million accounts have been scrubbed off of WhatsApp as part of a crackdown on 'criminal scam centres', most of them in South East Asia. Meta is working to target too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited texts unleashed to steal people's personal information or money. Scrapping scam accounts is just one of the measures the parent company announced earlier this week. A new tool is also being rolled out on WhatsApp to help customers spot any signs of fraud – but experts argue that much more is needed to protect people. The truth is that fraudsters are working around the clock to perfect their techniques and as a result, scams are becoming more sophisticated by the minute. Fake recruiters reaching out with a job offer or opportunity is one of the most popular scams to look out for. Often getting in touch completely unsolicited, they try to bait jobseekers with false promises of high pay and competitive benefits. As an excuse to extort money, they may request payment for training, and if it is information they are after, they will try and persuade people to share bank accounts and other details. Another successful fraud is the 'fake giveaway'. Texts with links for free products or vouchers regularly circulate WhatsApp. They typically lead to a malicious website and ask people to complete a survey before attempting to gain your personal and financial information to 'post your prize'. In addition to banning the scam accounts, WhatsApp is also rolling out a single new feature to help protect users. More Trending Group messaging: WhatsApp is launching a new safety overview that will show when someone who is not in the user's contacts adds them to a new group you may not recognize. It will include key information about the group and tips to stay safe. From there, people can exit the group without ever having to look at the chat. Individual messaging: While this is not a feature yet, Meta said it is testing new approaches to alerting people to pause before engaging with a user not in the contacts. UK consumer rights organisation Which? welcomed the announcement, but said: 'Meta must do much more to stop these criminals across all its platforms.' Jesse Eisenberg's Reason for Passing on The Social Network 2 Revealed

Jesse Eisenberg won't be returning to play Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming The Social Network 2, and according to a new report, we have some information as to why. Why did Jesse Eisenberg pass on The Social Network 2? According to a new report from Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, Eisenberg didn't pass on the film for any monetary or artistic reason, but instead due to David Fincher not being involved in the project. Fincher directed the original The Social Network, and won't be involved in the sequel. Sneider's report also notes that Eisenberg may not have wanted his career to be 'defined' by playing Zuckerberg. Although the role took Eisenberg to superstardom, he has since appeared in a number of high-profile roles. Currently, little is known about The Social Network 2. The movie is believed to 'focus on how the company's own reporting pointed to the negative effects the company's social media was having on teens and kids, how it knew misinformation was proliferating and causing violence, and how it contributed to the coup attempt of Jan. 6, 2021.' Although casting is not confirmed as of right now, a number of stars are reported to be involved in the project. These include Succession's Jeremy Strong, who is in talks to lead the film as Zuckerberg, as well as Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison, who are both also said to be top choices to star in the film. Much-loved Instagram feature is no longer available to millions after overnight

Meta has removed a popular function from Instagram for millions of users. Instagram Live was introduced in 2016, allowing anyone to broadcast an hour-long video stream to their followers or a room of three guests. But Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, quietly updated its rules last month to restrict who can go live. Instagram's Help Center states: 'Only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a Live broadcast.' Now, users who don't have public accounts and have fewer than 1,000 followers will be greeted by a pop-up when they try to go live. 'Your account is no longer eligible to go Live,' it says. Around one in four Instagram users have fewer than 1,000 followers. With some 2billion monthly users, this amounts to about 250million people. Social media experts have criticised the move, saying that the shift will likely impact smaller content creators, aspiring influencers and regular people who use the feature to chat with close friends. Media consultant Chad Teixeira told Metro: 'For smaller creators and aspiring influencers, it's a bit of a bittersweet change. 'Live was a fun, casual way to connect without overthinking, perfect for showing personality and building those first loyal followers. 'Now, it's all about hitting that magic 1,000 before you can beam yourself out in real time. Think of it as Instagram nudging you to focus on Reels, Stories, and Collabs first, then unlocking Live later. 'It's not the end of the road for breakout stars, just a shift in the journey. Creators can still grow by leaning into short, snackable content, jumping into collaborations, and building community in DMs and comments.' One said on X: 'Can't go live cause I don't have 1,000 followers, b***h, I don't even like 1,000 people.' Becky added: 'Can't do live videos on Instagram anymore without 1,000 followers, what the actual f**k, that's so unfair, I only have 118 followers.' A user who said they often do live streams of themselves playing games said their most recent broadcast was 'prob my last'. 'I enjoyed just popping in once in a while and not feeling the pressure other apps force on you,' they added. The social network did not give a reason for the change when approached by TechCrunch, other than to 'improve the overall Live consumption experience'. Teixeira said Meta may have to 'reduce spam and align with other platforms' thresholds'. More Trending The rule brings Instagram's live feature more in line with TikTok's as the short-form video app also requires users to have 1,000 followers or more. YouTube, meanwhile, only asks channels to have 50 subscribers or more to go live. Meta has been approached for comment. 'The Social Network 2' has officially been confirmed, and now some big names are all set to be added to the cast list. Actor Jeremy Strong has been eyeing the project lately with the possibility of being confirmed as one of the official cast members for the projectseemingly high. Jeremy Strong may join 'The Social Network' 2 Jeremy Strong from 'Succession', has officially expressed his interest in 'The Social Network 2', joining the likes of Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter reports, all of these actors have been positively reviewing the script and have been meeting up with the writer of the film, Aaron Sorkin . Sorkin was a part of the original 2010 film as well and had written an award-winning script at the time. While nothing has been confirmed from the film's team, it is reported that, as of right now, the film is still in its development stage. It has also been shared that, as of now, no official offers have been made to any actor or actress for roles in the film either. What will the film be about? The original film showed the story of how one of the most popular social media companies came into existence and what all went down behind the development of the platform. This endeavour, however, will explore the impact that it has had on its audience, specifically focusing on the negative sides. It will take into account how children and teenagers have been influenced and affected by the power of social media in the past decade or so. The film will also cover the coup attempt of January 6, 2021, and will explore themes of the booming misinformation that is being circulated online on a daily basis. Mikey Madison is in talks to play the whistleblower Frances Haugen, who went to some of the biggest publications with her findings. Jeremy Allen White, on the other hand, has the possibility of taking on the role of the very reporter who broke the story to the public. As for Strong's role, nothing has been shared, though speculations and rumours suggest that he will either be taking on the role of one of the editors of the publication, or he will be playing the CEO of the company, Mark Zuckerberg .

The Social Network 2 To Cast The Bear & Anora Actors as Sequel Leads

The Social Network 2, directed by Aaron Sorkin, is eyeing lead stars from The Bear and Anora. Two award-winning actors are currently in discussions to join the sequel, emerging as Sorkin's top choices to headline the next chapter in the Facebook saga. The Social Network 2 likely to add Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White According to Deadline, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White have not received formal offers, but both are being eyed by Aaron Sorkin, who is currently assembling the cast and budget before submitting them to the studio for approval. Reportedly, they have also met with Sorkin. He is eyeing Madison, who won the 2024 Best Actress Oscar for Anora, to play Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower. White, a two-time Emmy winner for The Bear, is reportedly in line to play Jeff Horwitz, the former Wall Street Journal reporter who led The Facebook Files exposé. The sequel is based on Horwitz's 2021 investigative series detailing Facebook's internal research into the harms caused by its platform. The film is not a direct sequel to the 2010 David Fincher-directed original but instead a new chapter focusing on Facebook's impact in the 2020s. While the original film chronicled the creation of the social network, this installment explores Facebook's knowledge of misinformation, harm to youth, and its alleged role in the January 6 Capitol attack. Sorkin began developing the script following those events, citing them as a turning point for the project. Sony Pictures is distributing the film, with production led by Sorkin, Stuart Besser, Peter Rice, and Todd Black. The studio has declined to comment on casting or development status. Casting for the role of Mark Zuckerberg remains undetermined, and it is unclear whether Jesse Eisenberg will return. Madison is expected to film The Masque of the Red Death for A24 in 2026. White will next appear as Bruce Springsteen in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, set for release on October 24.
