WhatsApp deletes 6,800,000 scam accounts offering fake jobs and products
Meta is working to target too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited texts unleashed to steal people's personal information or money.
Scrapping scam accounts is just one of the measures the parent company announced earlier this week.
A new tool is also being rolled out on WhatsApp to help customers spot any signs of fraud – but experts argue that much more is needed to protect people.
The truth is that fraudsters are working around the clock to perfect their techniques and as a result, scams are becoming more sophisticated by the minute.
Fake recruiters reaching out with a job offer or opportunity is one of the most popular scams to look out for.
Often getting in touch completely unsolicited, they try to bait jobseekers with false promises of high pay and competitive benefits.
As an excuse to extort money, they may request payment for training, and if it is information they are after, they will try and persuade people to share bank accounts and other details.
Another successful fraud is the 'fake giveaway'. Texts with links for free products or vouchers regularly circulate WhatsApp.
They typically lead to a malicious website and ask people to complete a survey before attempting to gain your personal and financial information to 'post your prize'.
In addition to banning the scam accounts, WhatsApp is also rolling out a single new feature to help protect users. More Trending
Group messaging: WhatsApp is launching a new safety overview that will show when someone who is not in the user's contacts adds them to a new group you may not recognize.
It will include key information about the group and tips to stay safe. From there, people can exit the group without ever having to look at the chat.
Individual messaging: While this is not a feature yet, Meta said it is testing new approaches to alerting people to pause before engaging with a user not in the contacts.
UK consumer rights organisation Which? welcomed the announcement, but said: 'Meta must do much more to stop these criminals across all its platforms.'

Myleene Klass's ex responds to cheating claims
Myleene Klass's ex-husband has hit back at claims that he cheated on her. The 47-year-old musician, presenter and model recently warned those who 'have reason to' be afraid, following claims her ex-husband cheated on her with a well-known female celebrity. Klass was married for two years to her Irish bodyguard Graham Quinn, initially meeting in 2001, marrying in 2011, and divorcing two years later in 2013. Speaking about their relationship, she revealed that she caught him about to sleep with a 'famous person' while in her own home for her birthday. Now, however, Graham, with whom she shares two daughters, has clapped back at Klass. According to those close to him, a source told Daily Mail: 'He thinks she's a bully. 'They believe it was especially 'vindictive and calculated' of Myleene to launch the bombshell broadside on what she would have known was the week of Graham's 51st birthday.' In a previous chat with Fathers4Justice, Graham was also found to have said that Klass 'actively denied' him access to his two kids. He told how he felt that he was 'banging his head against a brick wall' in his attempts for access. saying: 'I haven't seen my kids in years. 'The only exception is when Myleene begrudgingly met me in a car park off the North Circular Road in 2014. 'She lowered the window about three inches and I could see the girls in the back. That was it. 'I've thrown so much more money at it [trying to see his daughters] and I can't afford much more. 'I've spent £20,000 and am probably further away from them now than I've ever been. I've missed so many birthdays and Christmas days. I'll never get that back.' Throughout this ordeal, Klass has declined to name the woman involved at the time. But earlier this week, the presenter took to Instagram with what appears to be a veiled warning to those 'who probably have reason to' be afraid, declaring she 'won't keep her mouth shut' and has 'receipts.' Alongside a photograph of her recently awarded MBE – for services to women's health, miscarriage awareness, and charity – Klass shared a heartfelt message with her followers. More Trending 'Wow. What a week it's been!' she wrote. 'Firstly, thank you. I have quite literally tens of thousands of messages of love and support for me and my family. I took a long time to learn there's strength in vulnerability.' She added: 'At 47, I've finally found my voice and it's clear, unapologetic and brutally honest.' 'To those that fear its truth, you probably have reason to. I have receipts. To those that need to hear it, I've got you—and I fully intend to continue using it to change the laws and legislation that neglect women and children in this country and around the world.' Metro has contacted Myleene Klass for comment. Got a story? Teenager slashed in face as bloody brawl breaks out on Paisley street
The 17-year-old was slashed in the face in Gauze Street, Paisley on Friday evening. A teenager was rushed to hospital after being slashed in the face with a knife during a violent street brawl in Paisley. The 17-year-old was injured in a fight involving rival gangs of youths in Gauze Street at around 9.30pm on Friday. Police say the victim had been with a group "who appear to have met up with another group of youths" in the Renfrewshire town, before a fight broke out. Officers believe several of those involved were armed with knives and one was used to inflict the teenager's facial injury. He was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment before being discharged. Officers described his attacker as white, in his late teens, of slim build and wearing a blue North Face hooded top with white horizontal stripes, and a black "bum-bag". A second 17-year-old boy was also attacked, suffering a punch to the face, but did not require hospital treatment. The suspect in this other attack is described as white, in his late teens, of slim build, and wearing a grey tracksuit which was light grey on top half and dark grey bottom half, and with a tattoo on his left hand. Officers said both suspects ran off under the bridge at Gilmour Street towards Christie Lane following the incident. Both were then caught on CCTV in Old Sneddon Street later in the evening dressed in different clothes. Detective Constable Rhys Wake of Paisley CID said: "From our inquiries so far, we know that the injured youths were part of a group who appear to have met up with another group of youths. During that meet, a fight took place. "We believe a number of the youths were armed with knives, with obviously one being used and causing injury. "We also know from our CCTV inquiries that the suspects have changed their clothes and were later seen around midnight in Old Sneddon Street walking towards Moncrieff Street. The suspect, who was in light blue hoodie originally, is described on this occasion as wearing a black top and royal blue tracksuit bottoms. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "The suspect in grey tracksuit changed into a full black tracksuit and this time he had a black "bum bag". "Gauze Street around 9.30pm is very busy, so we'd like to hear from anyone who saw the fight or has information that may help us trace those responsible. "If you were driving in the Gauze Street, Gilmour Street, Christie Lane area between 9.20 and 9.40pm, or Old Sneddon Street or Moncrieff Street around midnight, and have dashcam on your vehicle, we'd be keen to view any footage you think may be of assistance." Police have appealed to anyone with information to call them on 101, quoting incident number 3760 of Friday, August 8 2025, or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
