Jackrabbits shut down Northern Colorado, 11-2
BROOKINGS, S.D. In evening the three-game series at a game apiece, the Jackrabbits improved to 13-29 overall and 9-13 in league play. UNC dropped to 17-27 overall and 8-15 in The Summit League. Duerr struggled in the early going as the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Carter Monda and bunt single by Brett Barber, Jake King plated both runs with a two-out single up the middle. A freshman from Melbourne, Iowa, Siegert put SDSU on the board with a home run to lead off the bottom of the second, then helped jump-start a six-run fourth inning. After Bryce Ronken singled to lead off the home half of the fourth, Siegert doubled off the fence in right field to move Ronken to third. After Jess Bellows was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dagen Schramm and Nic Werk each drew two-out walks to force in the tying and go-ahead runs. More two-out magic followed as Carter Sintek and Nolan Grawe hit back-to-back two-run doubles to push the Jackrabbit lead to 7-2. Schramm added another run-scoring double in the fifth and Siegert capped the scoring with a three-run homer to right in the eighth. Meanwhile, Duerr limited Northern Colorado to only three base runners the remainder of his five-inning start. The freshman right-hander allowed only three hits while striking out three and walking four. Goble followed with four hitless and scoreless innings, striking out one while allowing only a walk and a hit batter en route to his first career save. SDSU finished with a 12-3 advantage in hits as Siegert, Sintek and Ronken each tallied three hits. The Bears did not record a hit after the first inning. Northern Colorado scores late to defeat SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. UNC improved to 17-26 overall and 8-14 in league play. The Jackrabbits dropped to 12-29 overall and 8-13 in The Summit League. SDSU scored in each of the first four innings in holding a 6-4 lead midway through the contest. After the Bears scored twice in the top of the first inning, the Jackrabbits quickly loaded the bases in their first at-bat on only three pitches as Carter Sintek singled, Nolan Grawe doubled to the warning track in left-center field and Bryce Ronken was hit by a pitch. However, the Jackrabbits would only come away with one run in the first inning as Jess Bellows came through with a two-out infield single that plated Sintek. UNC used more small ball to score an unearned run in the top of the second, but SDSU drew back to within a run when Keagen Jirschele led off the bottom of the frame with his second home run off the season. Jirschele then tied the game at 3-all an inning later with an RBI double. An RBI single by Brett Barber put the Bears back out front at 4-3 in the fourth before SDSU struck for three runs in the home half of the inning. Bryce Ronken doubled in both Sintek and Grawe for the first two runs, with Ronken later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Adam Benes. It remained a 6-4 game until the fateful top of the eighth, when the Bears batted around. Jake King walked and Craig Kenny reached on an infield single off SDSU reliever Tristan Augedahl to open the inning. The Jackrabbits then went to closer Dylan Driessen, who walked pinch hitter Dalton Miller to load the bases before Nick Barber plated one run with a groundout and Carter Monda followed two batters later with a two-run, go-ahead single to right field. Another groundout plated the fourth run of the inning and an RBI infield single by Kai Wagner capped the rally. Gibson, meanwhile, allowed only three hits over his five innings of work as he struck out three batters. UNC starter Murphy Gienger allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking three in four innings. Arlen Peters was the first of six Jackrabbit pitchers in the game and surrendered three earned runs on five hits in three-plus innings. He walked two and struck out one. Clutch hitting leads SDSU to win over Bison
BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — South Dakota State scored all six of its runs on two-out hits, including the go-ahead two-run single from Jess Bellows in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Jackrabbits downed North Dakota State, 6-3, in the opening game of a four-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. SDSU improved to 10-27 overall and 6-11 in league play. The Bison, who saw their losing skid reach four games, fell to 13-24 overall and 10-8 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double to left field by Bryce Ronken that plated both Nolan Grawe and Luke Luskey. SDSU starter Arlen Peters held the Bison hitless through 4 1/3 innings and carried a shutout into the sixth inning. NDSU tied the game at 2-all in the sixth when Jake Schaffner led off with a walk and scored on Davis Hamilton's home run to right-center field. Tristan Augedahl followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for SDSU before giving way to closer Dylan Driessen. After stranding two men in the third, fifth and sixth innings against NDSU starter Nolan Johnson, the Jackrabbits put together a pair of two-out rallies against the Bison bullpen in the late innings. In the home seventh, Luskey and Owen Siegert hit back-to-back two-out singles and Ronken worked a walk to load the bases. In a long at-bat in which he fouled off several two-strike pitches from Skyler Riedinger, Bellows lined a single to center field that brought home both Luskey and Siegert for a 4-2 Jackrabbit lead. Some anxious moments ensued for the Jackrabbits in the top of the eighth. Hamilton reached on a sun-aided double to right field with one out in the inning and later scored when the throw to third base on a steal attempt glanced far enough off the glove of Grawe to allow Hamilton to race home. Driessen then walked each of the next three batters to load the bases, but the junior right-hander got out of the jam by striking out Alex Urlaub looking on a 3-2 pitch. SDSU countered with more two-out hitting in the bottom of the eighth. Adam Benes led off with a single against Bison reliever Sam Roberts, but remained there after the next two Jackrabbit hitters were retired. However, Benes moved up two bases on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Grawe's third hit of the game, an infield single back up the middle. Grawe then circled the bases as Luskey doubled to the fence in left field for the Jackrabbit first baseman's third hit of the game. The Jackrabbits ended up with a 13-3 advantage in the hit column for the game. Siegert added two hits for SDSU. Driessen worked a perfect top of the ninth to close out his second win of the season. He struck out four and walked three over the final 2 1/3 innings. Peters also fanned four and walked three in his season-best five-plus innings. For NDSU, Johnson recorded nine strikeouts, walked two and scattered seven hits over six solid frames. The Jackrabbits added what would turn out to be the final run of the game in the third inning. The right-hander struck out three, walked one and hit one batter before exiting with runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Driessen entered and induced a groundout to third base to end the St. Thomas threat in the seventh, then tossed two more hitless innings to lock down his third save of the season. He struck out three and allowed one hit. Tanner Recchio and Brigs Richartz each tallied two of St. Thomas' seven hits. The Jackrabbits finished with only four hits in the contest.
