Northern Colorado scores late to defeat SDSU

Yahoo03-05-2025
BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — Northern Colorado scored five times in the top of the eighth inning and received five shutout innings in relief from Hunter Gibson to post a 9-6 victory over South Dakota State in the opening game of a three-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
UNC improved to 17-26 overall and 8-14 in league play. The Jackrabbits dropped to 12-29 overall and 8-13 in The Summit League.
SDSU scored in each of the first four innings in holding a 6-4 lead midway through the contest. After the Bears scored twice in the top of the first inning, the Jackrabbits quickly loaded the bases in their first at-bat on only three pitches as Carter Sintek singled, Nolan Grawe doubled to the warning track in left-center field and Bryce Ronken was hit by a pitch.
However, the Jackrabbits would only come away with one run in the first inning as Jess Bellows came through with a two-out infield single that plated Sintek.
UNC used more small ball to score an unearned run in the top of the second, but SDSU drew back to within a run when Keagen Jirschele led off the bottom of the frame with his second home run off the season. Jirschele then tied the game at 3-all an inning later with an RBI double.
An RBI single by Brett Barber put the Bears back out front at 4-3 in the fourth before SDSU struck for three runs in the home half of the inning. Bryce Ronken doubled in both Sintek and Grawe for the first two runs, with Ronken later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Adam Benes.
It remained a 6-4 game until the fateful top of the eighth, when the Bears batted around. Jake King walked and Craig Kenny reached on an infield single off SDSU reliever Tristan Augedahl to open the inning. The Jackrabbits then went to closer Dylan Driessen, who walked pinch hitter Dalton Miller to load the bases before Nick Barber plated one run with a groundout and Carter Monda followed two batters later with a two-run, go-ahead single to right field. Another groundout plated the fourth run of the inning and an RBI infield single by Kai Wagner capped the rally.
Gibson, meanwhile, allowed only three hits over his five innings of work as he struck out three batters. UNC starter Murphy Gienger allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking three in four innings.
Arlen Peters was the first of six Jackrabbit pitchers in the game and surrendered three earned runs on five hits in three-plus innings. He walked two and struck out one. Alex Clemons fanned three batters in two scoreless innings.
SDSU finished with a 12-10 advantage in hits as Sintek and Grawe each tallied three hits and Jirschele added two. Brett Barber, King and Kenny each notched two hits for the Bears.
UP NEXTThe middle game of the series is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES
UNC leads the season series, 3-1, and has won nine of the last 10 meetings
The Jackrabbits hold a 41-37 advantage in the all-time series
Ronken reached base for the 20th game in a row, which is the largest streak by an SDSU player this season
Grawe has multiple hits in six of the last seven games
Sintek took over the team lead with his 17th multi-hit game of the season
Jirschele's home run was the first hit by a Jackrabbit in the second inning of a game this season
Ty Madison made his team-leading 17 pitching appearance of the year and was credited with a scoreless fourth inning
SDSU is expected to be without the services of its leading home run and RBI man in Luke Luskey for the remainder of the season after he suffered a knee injury last weekend against North Dakota State

Bills Pro Bowl left tackle coaches up Bears DE Austin Booker

Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins has faced his fair share of elite pass rushers throughout his eight-year career. The four-time Pro Bowler has gone against the likes of Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, Khalil Mack, Trey Hendrickson, and many more players who could get to the quarterback at will. He knows what a good pass rusher looks like, which makes his recent comments to Chicago Bears defensive end Austin Booker that much more impactful. Last week, the Bills came into the Chicagoland area for their joint practice and preseason game with the Bears. Coming with them was HBO's "Hard Knocks" crew, one year after they followed the Bears themselves around training camp. The HBO series was back at Halas Hall last Friday and happened to catch a very wholesome moment between Dawkins and Booker at practice. "Bro, you drastically look different than everybody out here," Dawkins told Booker in between drills. "So you have to play different than everybody out here. If they ain't doing all that acrobatic [expletive], you got to be the one to do it. Because you're their spark." Booker was indeed a spark for the Bears' defensive line coming into the week. He had a monster performance against the Miami Dolphins in the preseason opener, finishing with three sacks, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble in the 24-24 tie. Dawkins noticed him and how he looked during the joint practice, giving him tips on ways he can improve his game. The veteran also made sure he was available to the second-year pass rusher in case he wanted advice. "I'm here; whatever questions you've got, ask bro," he said. "We're all employees of the NFL, dog." The second-year edge rusher was drafted by the Bears in the fifth round out of Kansas as a raw prospect and seems to be turning heads everywhere he goes. Dawkins clearly sees something in him, and it's good to hear someone like him be willing to coach up a young player. For his part, Booker once again made impact plays in the preseason game. He finished with two tackles, one for a loss, a sack, and a QB hit prior to exiting early with an injury. Even though the sack didn't come against Dawkins, who didn't play, he saw what the young edge rusher can do from the sidelines. Hopefully Booker heeds Dawkins' advice as he continues to develop at the pro level. Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson begin to show what's possible with Bears

The Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson era couldn't have gotten off to a better start. Yes, it was only preseason. Still, Caleb Williams had one of the better drives we have seen from him as an NFL quarterback. Caleb did a lot of things he struggled with in his rookie season and looked like a completely different player. It is always hard to predict how things will go after seeing preseason action, especially given that the Buffalo Bills were not playing their starters against the Chicago Bears, but seeing a glimpse of how efficient and dangerous this Bears offense can be has to get Chicago fans excited. Brendan Sugrue with Bears Wire gave his thoughts on the early success of Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams: "Williams and the starting offense opened things up with an impressive touchdown drive where he went 5-of-6 for 97 yards. He was accurate and poised, delivering the ball quickly to tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet while firing a dart to Olamide Zaccheaus for the touchdown. His lone miss was on a play where he was pressured to his right and had to make an off-balance throw to Zaccheaus that came a play before they connected for a touchdown. "All in all, Williams finished the day going 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown with a passer rating of 130.0. Williams is starting with his left foot forward, a change from last year. His base looks improved from his rookie season as well, something that wasn't always consistent. The best news, however, may be that Williams didn't take a single sack in either series after he took 68 in 2024. There is a long way to go, but the unofficial start to the Williams and Johnson partnership could not have gone much better than it did on Sunday night." Caleb Williams had the fourth highest PFF grade among all quarterbacks in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. He ultimately was one of the biggest winners from this week. All of the offseason banter that painted Caleb Williams in a negative light seems to be simmering down after Sunday night's performance. Given how creative and efficient Ben Johnson's offense is, a consistently excellent Caleb Williams will make the Bears very dangerous in the NFC. We will see Caleb Williams have an MVP-level season. In that sole drive Caleb Williams not only looked like Jared Goff, but he also looked a lot like number 13 for the USC Trojans a couple seasons ago. Getting Caleb Williams to make plays on time and be the player who was drafted No. 1 will take this Bears team to new heights this season.
