Egyptian talent takes centre stage at 4th Hollywood Arab Film Festival - Screens - Arts & Culture

The fourth Hollywood Arab Film Festival (HAFF), celebrating Arab Heritage Month from 9 to 13 April at Hollywood Universal Studio Cinema in California, will feature multiple Egyptian films, including Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo and The Tale of Daye's Family. Actor Ahmed Helmy will receive the Life Achievement Award, and actress Elham Shaheen will head the jury panel. Directed by Egyptian filmmaker Karim El-Shenawy, The Tale of Daye's Family (Daye: Seret Ahl El Daye) will open HAFF. The Tale of Daye's Family: Opening film The Egyptian-Saudi co-production Daye, written by Haitham Dabbour, follows the story of an 11-year-old albino Nubian boy who dreams of going on a magical journey from south to north Egypt to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. Daye, the first Egyptian film to feature an albino actor as the protagonist, had its world premiere as the opening film of the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival and competed at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film stars Saudi actress Aseel Omran, Sudanese actress Islam Mubarak, and Egyptian actors Haneen Said and Badr Mohamed. El-Shennawy directed the highly successful TV series Lam Shamseya (2025), screened during Ramadan. The series shed light on the unique topics of child sexual abuse and family disintegration. He also directed the film Gunshot (2018), which starred Ahmad El-Fishawi, Mohamed Mamdouh, and Rubi. Before that, El-Shenawy was an assistant director (AD) in several noteworthy productions, including Mohamed Diab's Clash (2016), which garnered over a dozen awards, including four wins at the Carthage Film Festival (2016) and countless nominations, including at the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. Clash was Egypt's nomination to the Academy Awards but was not shortlisted. Seeking Haven For Mr. Rambo: Screened in the Narrative Feature section Six films will compete in the upcoming edition of HAFF, including Seeking Haven For Mr. Rambo by Khaled Mansour. The film had its world premiere in the Orizzonti Extra section at the 81st Venice International Film Festival (28 August—7 September 2024). It was then screened in numerous festivals and released commercially in Arab countries. The drama film tells the story of Hassan (Essam Omar), a young man in his thirties who is forced to confront his past fears. He embarks on a journey of self-discovery, which includes a quest to save his dog and best friend, Rambo, from an unknown fate. HAFF will also screen Mira Shaib's Arze (Lebanon), Oday Rasheed's If You See Something (Iraq), Hala Matar's Electra (Bahrain), and Sina Mohammed's Transient Happiness (Kurdistan). Additionally, 16 short films will compete in the short film section, including the Egyptian film Wishes For My Heart (Sherine Diab), Jordanian films The Chant (May Ghouti) and Shadows (Rand Beiruty), Syrian film Weaning (Houssam Hamo), and Algerian film NYA (Imene Ayadi). Ahmed Helmy: Life Achievement Award During the festival's activities, actor Ahmed Helmy will receive the Life Achievement Award, and his film Sorry for the Disturbance (2008) by Khaled Marei will be screened, followed by a discussion. Helmy, a High Institute for Theatre graduate, is one of the region's most popular artists. He launched his career on television with the programme Laab Eyal (Kids' Games). He rose to stardom in 1999 for his role in Sherif Arafa's comedy Aboud Ala El-Hedoud (Aboud on the Borders), which starred Karim Abdel Aziz. He has starred in over 25 successful feature films, including Sahar El-Layaly (2003), Saye Bahr (2004), Zaky Chan (2005), Alf Mabrouk (2009), Bolbol Hairan (2009), Horoob Etirari: Forced Escape (2017), and Scarecrow (2019), among many others. He also voices a storyteller in Amr Salama's 2014 film La Moakhza (Excuse my French). Helmy is a prominent promoter of children's rights and often raises awareness on early childhood development issues in the region. Elham Shaheen - Head of Jury Egyptian actress Elham Shahine has been appointed the head of the jury for the narrative feature films programme. Shaheen launched her career with director Kamal Yassin, who gave her a role in his play made for television, Hooreya Men Al Marikh (Mermaid from Mars). She then went on to star in numerous TV series, including Akhu El Banat (Brother of the Sisters), A'al El-Bahr (The Ocean Said), Hatta la Yakhtaniq Al-Hob (So Love Doesn't Suffocate), Nisf Rabia Al-Akhar (The Second Half of Spring), Layaly El-Helmeya (Nights of Helmeya), and Samhoony, Makansh Asdy (I'm Sorry, I Didn't Mean To). She also won many awards for her roles in The Gentle and Ya Dunia Ya Gharamy (Oh World, Oh my Love). ​HAFF The 4th edition introduces the new programme, Voices from Los Angeles, which includes screening six films by young filmmakers from American universities. The festival launched the first edition of HAFF industry days, where five projects in development are competing: Egyptian film The Land Beyond by Nadine Salib, Iraqi film Madness and Honey Days by Ahmed Yassin, Sudanese film Blue Card by Mohamed El-Omda, Lebanese film Plus One by Zayn Alexander, and Palestinian film The Hearse to the Final House of Happiness by Wisam Al-Jafari. Organized in the heart of Hollywood by the Hollywood Arab Film Festival Foundation, HAFF showcases Arab narrative, documentary, and short films. Dozens of renowned filmmakers are expected to attend. The Settlement director Mohamed Rashad: 'The next generation Egyptian cinema is here'

'It's a good time for Egyptian cinema,' says writer-director Mohamed Rashad. 'It's everywhere. It's in Berlin. Some films were in Cannes and Venice. So it's a good time for Egyptian cinema. Especially arthouse cinema.' Rashad is one of several Egyptian filmmakers presenting works at this year's prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, known as Berlinale. His tough-minded workplace drama The Settlement had its premiere this week in the Perspectives strand, a new €50,000 ($52,300) competitive section for international debut fiction features. Alongside this, The Tale of Daye's Family by Karin El-Shenawy screened in the Generation 14-plus line-up; while The Last Day, the debut short by Egyptian filmmaker Mahmoud Ibrahim, featured in Forum Expanded, a strand for more experimental fare. East of Noon, directed by Hala Elkoussy, also opened Berlin Critics' Week, a selection of films that runs parallel to the main festival. That film's star, Fayza Shama, has also been selected as one of the Berlinale Talents, an initiative showcasing actors, directors and more from around the globe. 'I think we have a new generation of filmmakers,' Rashad tells The National when he sits down to discuss his film in the Potsdamer Platz's plush Hyatt Hotel. It's hard to disagree. Take a walk to the EFM, the European Film Market, based nearby and there's even a poster reminding us that Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh is in production. The $10 million political thriller, starring Fares Fares, is the third in Saleh's Cairo trilogy following The Nile Hilton Incident and Boy From Heaven, which had its premiere in Cannes in 2022. Ask Rashad why he feels this new generation of Egyptian filmmakers is suddenly making waves in the world of cinema, and he answers simply: 'They want to express themselves more.' In his case, The Settlement is a film that deals both with the personal and the political. Set in an industrial corner of Alexandria, the primary setting is a steel factory. The twenty-something Hossam (Adham Shukr), a former drug dealer, is offered a job as some sort of twisted compensation after his father perished there in an accident. Joining Hossam is his 12-year-old brother Maro (Ziad Islam), who is also desperate to avenge their father's death. With murder in mind, there path is heading towards self-destruction. 'I'm interested in what's going on in families, the relationships between family members,' says Rashad. 'Not just Hossam and his father, but also Hossam and Maro. He feels like he's a father to him. So this relationship to me is very interesting. What you expect from your father, what your father expects from you.' Rashad's 2016 documentary Little Eagles went along similar lines, detailing his relationship with his father, as he tries to pursue his own dreams of becoming a filmmaker. 'I felt that we're not satisfied with each other,' he explains. 'He wasn't satisfied with me. But at some point, we managed to have a good relationship. Actually my sister, after the screening of the film, was crying and she told me: 'I felt that your relationship with our father got better. And after watching the film I know why.'' While The Settlement deals with issues of family first and foremost, it also has a political dimension to it, says Rashad. The film explores the dangers of capitalism, in a society where the interests 'of the powerful' often override all else. In this case, safety laws in Egyptian factories aren't always adhered to when there are profits to be made. 'It's all about capitalism,' he says. 'Safety costs.' Is his film a critique of Egyptian society? 'For sure, it's a criticism,' he says. The new generation of Egyptian cinema starts here.

Egyptian, Arab films at Berlin International Film Festival - Screens - Arts & Culture

The 75th edition of Berlinale features 198 films from around the world, including a powerful presence of Arab cinema in more than one section. Four films from Egypt are screened in the festival. The four Egyptian films featured at the Berlinale are Al Mosta'mera (The Settlement) by Mohamed Rashad, Daye: Seret Ahl El Daye (The Tale of Daye's Family) by Karim El Shenawy, East of Noon by Hala Elkoussy, and the short film Akher Youm (The Last Day) by Mahmoud Ibrahim. The Settlement premiered in the newly introduced Perspectives for First Features competition, vying for the Best First Feature Award funded by GWFF alongside 13 other films. The jury for this segment includes Tunisian-Canadian director Meryam Joobeu, French actor and filmmaker Aïssa Maïga, and Spanish producer María Zamora. Egypt's Ambassador to Germany, Mohamed El Badri, Minister Plenipotentiary Youmna Osman, and veteran Egyptian actor and President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, attended the screening. The film explores the lives of factory workers in Alexandria through the eyes of two brothers, Hossam and Maro. A month after their father died in a factory accident, 23-year-old Hossam takes a job at the same factory to support his family. Offered as compensation for their father's death, the job draws in Maro, his 12-year-old brother, who insists on leaving school to join him in the harsh world of labour. The film features newcomers Adham Shoukry, Ziad Islam, Hajar Omar, Mohamed Abdel Hady, Emad Ghoneim, and Hanady Abdel Khaliq. Actor Ahmed Helmy celebrated the European premiere of The Tale of Daye's Family alongside director Karim El Shenawy, scriptwriter Haitham Dabbour, and actors Aseel Omran and Badr Mohamed. The film was screened in the Generation 14plus competition, which highlights contemporary films about children and teenagers. It competes among 10 feature-length and 10 short films for the Crystal Bear and three other awards. The film premiered at the Red Sea International Film Festival last December. It follows Daye, a 14-year-old Nubian albino boy with a golden voice. Bullied for his unique appearance and abandoned by his father, Daye dreams of becoming a singer like his idol, Mohamed Mounir. Accompanied by his family and music teacher, Daye embarks on a road trip from Aswan to Cairo to audition for The Voice, exploring themes of identity, ambition, and family bonds. East of Noon by Hala Elkoussy was screened as part of the Critics' Week, featuring among 17 films selected this year. The black-and-white film, which had its world premiere at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, also participated in the Red Sea Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. It tells the story of Abdo, a rebellious young musician, and his love interest, Nunna, as they dream of escaping their oppressive hometown. Mahmoud Ibrahim's five-minute documentary The Last Day was screened in the Forum Expanded section. It follows two brothers, Ziad and Moody, on their final day at the family home before it is demolished as part of a city development plan. As they pack their belongings, they hear news of home demolitions in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem, casting a sombre shadow over their loss. Beyond Egyptian cinema, Berlinale also showcases films from other Arab countries. Syrian filmmaker Ameer Fakher Eldin presents his second feature, Yunan, competing for the Golden and Silver Bear awards. Starring Lebanese actor Georges Khabbaz, German actress Hanna Schygulla, and actors Ali Suliman, Sibel Kekilli, Nidal Al Achkar, and Tom Wlaschiha, the film follows Munir, a depressed Arab writer living in Hamburg. Seeking solitude, Munir travels to a remote island, where he encounters Valeska, a compassionate woman who helps him rediscover his will to live. Born in Kyiv to parents from Syria's Golan Heights, Fakher Eldin presents Yunan as the second instalment in his Homeland trilogy, exploring themes of identity, exile, and isolation. The festival also features two Arab documentaries in the Panorama section. Khartoum, co-directed by Anas Saeed, Rawia Alhag, Ibrahim Snoopy, Timeea M Ahmed, and Phil Cox, is a Sudanese, UK, German, and Qatari co-production that follows Sudanese refugees grappling with the trauma of war. Yalla Parkour by Areeb Zuaiter, a co-production from Sweden, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Palestine, documents the director's return to Gaza, where she connects with young parkour enthusiasts navigating life amid destruction. One of the most significant film events in the world, this year the festival showcases the latest and most influential international cinema, with Arab and Egyptian filmmakers securing prominent spots both within the festival and alongside it across the city of Berlin. In addition to an Egyptian talent selected in the Berlinale Talent for 2025, three Egyptian films are participating in the festival's competitions and programmes, while another film is featured in the Berlin Critics' Week which is not part of the Berlinale but runs alongside the festival in the German capital. The films include The Settlement, the debut feature-length fiction by Mohamed Rashad, competing in the newly established Berlinale Perspectives, a new €50,000 competitive section for international debut fiction features; The Tale of Daye's Family, a feature-length fiction directed by Karim El-Shenawy, competing in the Generation 14plus competition; and The Last Day, the debut short by Egyptian filmmaker Mahmoud Ibrahim, participating in the non-competitive Forum Expanded. Additionally, East of Noon by Hala Elkoussy is the opening film of the prestigious Berlin Critics' Week. Egyptian actor and dancer Fayza Shama, one of the lead actors in East of Noon, has been selected as a Berlinale Talent for 2025. Perspectives evolved from the Best First Feature Award, presented in partnership with GWFF since 2006. It will feature the world premiere of Mohamed Rashad's The Settlement, written and directed by Rashad, with the film's main production led by Hassala Films, an independent production house founded by the renowned Egyptian director and producer Hala Lotfy. Starring Adham Shoukry, Ziad Islam, Hajar Omar, Mohamed Abdel-Hady, and Emad Ghoneim, the film tells the story of 23-year-old Hossam, who takes a job at the factory where his father died, to support his family. His 12-year-old brother, Maro, joins him, leaving school behind. As Hossam navigates tensions with workers, including Mustafa, who is partially responsible for their father's death, another tragedy strikes, undoing his efforts to care for his family. Mohamed Rashad's feature-length debut documentary Little Eagles (2016), premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival and won the Best Documentary Award at the Malmo Festival. The Berlinale's Generation 14plus competition is dedicated to films that offer young audiences a chance to explore the world from their own perspective, creating a space for connection and shared experiences. This year's section features 34 films, including The Tale of Daye's Family, directed by Egyptian filmmaker Karim El-Shenawy, written by Haitham Dabbour, and starring Egyptian pop star Mohamed Mounir, alongside Badr Mohamed, Haneen Saeed, Aseel Omran (Saudi Arabia), and Islam Mobarak (Sudan). Daye tells the story of a 14-year-old Nubian albino with a golden voice who dreams of becoming a singer like Mohamed Mounir. Despite facing bullying and discrimination, Daye and his family journey from Aswan to Cairo for an audition on The Voice, overcoming theft, police evasion, and adversity along the way. The film highlights resilience, hope, and the transformative power of family and music, with unexpected support from Mounir himself. Karim El-Shenawy began his career with his debut film Gunshot (2018) and has since directed several series. Daye is produced by Blueprint Productions, a company he co-founded. The Forum Expanded section of the Berlinale showcases experimental films, artists' moving images, and expanded cinematic forms. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the section presents 24 works, including retrospectives. Among them is the world premiere of The Last Day, the debut short film by Egyptian filmmaker Mahmoud Ibrahim. The Last Day is a five-minute film about brothers Ziad and Moody spending their final moments in their family home, which is set to be demolished for city development. As they move furniture outside, Moody turns on the TV, where news of Palestinian home demolitions in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem, adds a sombre layer to their already melancholic day. Mahmoud Ibrahim, a 2023 graduate of the Higher Institute of Cinema in Alexandria, is from Kafr Al-Dawar. He co-founded HandyCam Films, an independent production company dedicated to developing alternative production methods and exploring new artistic spaces. The prestigious Berlin Critics' Week features 17 films, including East of Noon, written and directed by Egyptian filmmaker Hala Elkoussy, which opened the event. The film, shot in black-and-white 16mm, is a satirical parable about a tyrant, Shawki, who controls his people through fear, sugar, and entertainment. His rule is challenged by his grandson Abdo and his friend Nunno, who rebel through music and fearlessness. The film stars Fayza Shama, Menha El-Batraoui, Ahmed Kamal, and Omar Rozeik, with Abdelsalam Moussa as director of photography and producer, Ahmad Elsawy as composer, and Abdalrahman Mahmoud as sound designer. Hala Elkoussy's debut feature, Cactus Flower, premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and East of Noon premiered at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight. *** The presence of Arab cinema at this year's Berlinale goes beyond Egyptian work, with eight films by Arab filmmakers featured across various programmes, including both recent work and retrospective screenings. Prominent Arab figures are also involved in jury roles and industry events. Yunan stands out as the only Arab film in the Berlinale's International Competition, competing for the Golden and Silver Bears together with 19 films from 26 countries. Written, directed, and edited by Syrian filmmaker Ameer Fakher Eldin, Yunan stars Georges Khabbaz, Hanna Schygulla, Ali Suliman, Sibel Kekilli, and Tom Wlaschiha. The film follows Munir, who travels to a remote island to contemplate a drastic decision, encountering the mysterious Valeska and her son Karl, whose kindness helps ease his burden. Fakher Eldin's debut feature, The Stranger, premiered at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival, winning the Edipo Re Award. It became Palestine's official Oscar entry and won Best Arab Film and the Shadi Abdel-Salam Prize at the Cairo International Film Festival. The Berlinale Panorama showcases contemporary cinema of artistic and social relevance. This year, two documentaries by Arab filmmakers are featured: Khartoum and Yalla Parkour. Khartoum, co-directed by Sudanese filmmakers Ibrahim Snoopy, Ahmad Timeea, Rawia Alhag, Anas Saeed, and British director Philip Cox, captures the lives of five Khartoum residents under a military regime. As civil unrest escalates, they flee to East Africa, using animation and dream sequences to continue their story, offering a poignant portrait of their struggles. Yalla Parkour, the debut feature by Palestinian director Areeb Zuaiter, follows her childhood memory of seeing the sea in Gaza. Years later, she reconnects with her past through parkour, befriending Ahmed and exploring Gaza's ruins. As their bond deepens, she confronts themes of identity, belonging, and the emotional legacy of her homeland. Two additional Arab films are part of the Generation 14plus programme: Têtes brûlées and Beneath Which Rivers Flow. Têtes brûlées, written and directed by Belgian-Tunisian-Danish filmmaker Maja-Ajmia Yde Zellama, follows 12-year-old Eya, who grows up in a Tunisian-Muslim family in Brussels. After her brother Younès dies, Eya navigates grief with the help of her creativity, her brother's friends, and her faith, portraying a multicultural, united youth. Beneath Which Rivers Flow, a short film by Iraqi filmmaker Ali Yahya, follows Ibrahim and his family living in isolation in southern Iraq's marshlands. When the land begins to crumble, Ibrahim must confront forces that threaten both his way of life and his buffalo. In the Forum Expanded exhibition, J-N-N, a three-channel video installation by German-Iraqi artist Ginan Seidl, is being screened. The work, based on family conversations during a trip to Iraq and research into the jinn, explores a mystical side of Iraqi culture. The film takes viewers on a visual journey through Iraq, reflecting on a society shaped by war, civil conflict, and terrorism, while connecting personal experiences with historical events and the emotional void of those shared struggles. In celebration of the Forum Expanded Anniversary, the programme features a few retrospectives, including Das Kino Projekt (2021), co-directed by Lebanese filmmaker Siska (Elie Habib) and German artist Franziska Pierwoss. This mobile cinema screens old amateur films on Super 8 and 16mm, alongside global video art. It moves between cities, adopting the name of a closed or transformed cinema, and displays neon signs created for each city visited. The project started in Beirut and was meant to continue all the way to Aleppo in 2011, but was halted by the Syrian Civil War. It was featured in the 2022 Forum Expanded exhibit. Another film in the Forum Expanded Anniversary is Purple Sea (2020), a 67-minute experimental work co-written and co-directed by Syrian artists Amel Alzakout and Khaled Abdulwahed. Made from footage filmed by Alzakout after the boat on which she was fleeing Syria sank off the coast of Lesbos, the film captures the moment when she and other passengers float in life jackets, awaiting rescue, with Alzakout's voice-over accompanying this poignant experience. Although not made by Arab filmmakers, two Berlinale films explore Arab realities. One is No Beast So Fierce, directed by German filmmaker Burhan Qurbani and screened in the Berlinale Special non-competitive section. This reimagining of Shakespeare's Richard III tells the story of an Arab gangster queen, with a cast including renowned Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass and other actors of Arab descent. The other is Al Basateen, a 3D animated short directed by French filmmaker Antoine Chapon, shown in the Forum Expanded section. It follows two former residents of Damascus' Basateen Al-Razi district, destroyed in 2015 following an anti-Assad uprising. Through the Forum Expanded Anniversary collection, Shayne (2019) by Stephan Geene tells the autobiographical story of Ricky Shayne, a 1960s pop singer and actor of French-Lebanese descent born in Cairo. The film explores his brief fame in West Germany from 1967 to 1972, following his rise in Rome's Beat scene. Geene, fascinated by Shayne as a child, revisits his past, meeting the 72-year-old singer and his sons, who resemble him at his peak. Two Arab film projects are featured at this year's Berlinale. One is Holiday, a feature by French-Lebanese filmmaker Wissam Charaf, which is part of the 22nd Berlinale Co-Production Market (Feb 15-19). The other, Sun Sees Everything, is a feature in development by Lebanese director Wissam Tanios and producer Christian Eid, and has been selected for the Berlinale Talent Project Market. Two Arab filmmakers serve as jury members at this year's Berlinale. Moroccan director, screenwriter, and producer Nabil Ayouch, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is part of the International Competition jury, chaired by Todd Haynes. Academy Award-nominated Tunisian-American director Meryam Joobeur is on the jury for the new Perspectives competition. One of the key talks at this year's Berlinale Talents is led by renowned Lebanese sound designer Rana Eid, whose childhood was shaped by the echoes of war. The Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) announced the dates for its highly anticipated fifth edition, set to take place from December 4-13 at its permanent Jeddah's historic al-Balad. Marking a major milestone, RSIFF's fifth anniversary will build on its legacy of championing cinematic excellence, fostering creativity, and supporting filmmakers from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, the RSIFF said in a statement. The announcement comes shortly after wrapping up its fourth edition which took place from December 5-14, 2024 – the most attended edition yet – and kicked off with the world premiere of Karim Shenawi's 'The Tale of Daye's Family.' The fourth RSIFF transformed Jeddah's historic al-Balad district into a global hub for film and brought together industry legends, visionary filmmakers, and enthusiastic cinephiles from across the world, according to the statement. Last year's theme, 'The New Home of Film,' celebrated the festival's return to the historic Saudi neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and set the stage for impactful industry connections, groundbreaking deals, and new partnerships. The 2024 festival saw record-breaking participation, with over 40,000 attendees and nearly 7,000 accredited guests, showcasing 122 films from 85 countries, including 61 premieres. A total of 302 screenings took place, with half of the films being world or international premieres, including 46 world premieres, 15 international premieres, and 53 MENA premieres. The success of this edition reinforced RSIFF's growing impact as a major cultural and industry event, the statement added. Red Sea Souk Building on the festival's success, the Red Sea Souk also wrapped up a successful edition with 142 exhibiting companies, 40 Souk Talks speakers, and the Souk Project Market, which featured 24 projects in development or production and 7 works-in-progress in post-production by Arab, African, and Asian directors. Presided over by Spike Lee, the festival's two juries deliberated across 14 competition categories, with 16 feature films vying for top honors, alongside short films from the Arab world, Asia, and Africa featured in the New Saudi, New Cinema, and Arab Shorts programs. The festival's red carpet was a magnet for global stars, with this edition honoring Emily Blunt, Aamir Khan, Mona Zaki, Viola Davis, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Other notable attendees included Michelle Yeoh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Johnny Depp, Yousra, Vin Diesel, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cynthia Erivo, Brendan Fraser, and Mohamed Sami. of 4 The 2024 edition also hosted 25 'In-Conversation' sessions with renowned figures such as Aamir Khan, Emily Blunt, Cynthia Erivo, Brendan Fraser, Mohamed Sami, and Spike Lee, offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with some of the biggest names in global cinema. Furthering its commitment to nurturing talent, the Red Sea Fund has now supported over 280 projects, including one Oscar-nominated film, solidifying its role as a vital force in the regional and international film industry. As the festival prepares for its landmark fifth edition, it remains dedicated to celebrating storytelling, championing bold new voices, and shaping the future of cinema, according to the statement.
