Benedict Cumberbatch Ate Five Meals a Day to Play Doctor Strange, Says Hollywood Is ‘Grossly Wasteful': ‘It's Horrific Eating Beyond Your Appetite… I Could Feed a Family With the Amount' I Ate
Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a 'grossly wasteful industry' during an interview on 'Ruthie's Table 4' podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a 'body transformation' for his work, he also says 'it's horrific eating beyond your appetite.' 'Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it's just like, what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating,' Cumberbatch said, noting he would eat five meals a day while getting into Doctor Strange shape in addition to snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals. 'Think about set builds that aren't recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need to create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment. It's a lot of energy.' Cumberbatch admitted that actors are routinely slammed and branded as hypocrites when they speak out in support of sustainability in Hollywood given how wasteful the industry is, but the actor noted that he tries to 'push the green initiative' on his film sets as both an actor and a producer. 'You don't have to give the crew plastic bottles,' he said as an example. If you're in the middle of a desert and you can't get glass bottles there, fair enough. But we're in 21st Century.' Cumberbatch is on a press tour for his upcoming movie 'The Roses,' a reimagining of the 1981 novel 'The War of the Roses' by Warren Adler. The book previously spawned a 1989 film adaptation of the same name starring Michael Douglas Kathleen Turner Danny DeVito G. D. Spradlin. Cumberbatch's new version co-stars Olivia Colman. The duo play a married couple who self-destruct during a bitter divorce. 'The Roses' opens August 29 from Searchlight Pictures. Universal Will Open UK Theme Park & Resort, Its First in Europe
Universal Epic Universe in Orlando hasn't even officially opened, yet the company already has epic new plans. It's expanding its theme park footprint in a different way, with a location on the other side of the Atlantic. Comcast NBCUniversal has announced plans to open its first-ever entertainment complex in Europe. It's building a massive new Universal theme park and resort in the United Kingdom. Europe's first Universal-branded theme park and resort is heading across the pond. Comcast NBCUniversal says it's pursuing its first resort complex in Europe. It's building its next great locale on a 476-acre parcel in Bedford purchased in 2023. The company notes that's a 35 minute train ride north of London. It also says the park's location is connected by fast rail links to 80 percent of England's population and half of the UK population by 'two hours travel time. ' Universal Destinations & Experiences will design and build the United Kingdom complex. What will it actually include, though? The proposed plans must still undergo approval, which the company will submit in the coming months, so it can begin building in 2026. For no,w Comcast NBCUniversal says the UK Universal resort will 'feature a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment complex.' As for the 'world-class' theme park, the company promises 'several themed lands featuring Universal's distinct style of immersive and thrilling rides, innovative attractions and exciting entertainment.' That doesn't tell us much about what those lands will actually be. (We're betting 'The War of the Roses' is not among them, but we can dream…) The generic concept art for the UK Universal park doesn't reveal much either. Our best guess as to what lands might be included is to look at what Universal has recently built. 'Expanding into Europe presents us with a significant opportunity to reach new fans and share the incredible experiences our team creates,' said Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, in a press release. The company also believes/hopes/is trying to will into existence huge success. It says the park will become 'one of the highest-attended attractions in the continent and to bring in millions of new visitors to the UK.' If it's as epic as everything else Universal theme parks are currently doing, it will bring in visitors from outside the UK, too.

‘The Roses': Searchlight's ‘War of the Roses' Remake Sets Summer 2025 Release
'The Roses,' a reimagining of the 1989 dark comedy 'The War of the Roses,' will be released on Aug. 29, 2025, Searchlight announced on Tuesday. The new film will be directed by Jay Roach ('Bombshell') and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo's career nosedives while Ivy's own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. 'The Roses' is inspired by the 1989 classic film 'The War of the Roses,' based on the novel by Warren Adler. Directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, 'The War of the Roses' was a black comedy that earned a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations. Roach directed the new version of the divorce story from a screenplay written by Tony McNamara, who previously earned his second Oscar nomination for the screenplay to Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things.' Cumberbatch produced the film through his SunnyMarch banner alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, who have been in development on the project since 2017. Colman produced under South of the River with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Roach and Michelle Graham also produced with Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler of Adler Entertainment Trust as executive producers. The film is part of a first-look deal between them and Searchlight.
