Kenny Bee, Eric Tsang distance themselves from Namewee after taking group photo

Photo: Namewee/Threads Hong Kong singer Kenny Bee and Hong Kong actor Eric Tsang have swiftly distanced themselves from controversial Malaysian rapper-actor Namewee after a group photo of them was criticised by netizens. Bee and Tsang, both 72, were recently in Malaysia as part of the line-up of Hong Kong stars performing at the Wow! Super! Happy 30 Years concert at Resorts World Genting on July 19. Namewee, 42, took a photo with the pair before the show and posted it on social media on July 19, writing: 'Wishing you a successful performance tonight.' The photo of the trio together made waves on social media, with several netizens slamming Bee and Tsang for being associated with Namewee, whose full name is Wee Meng Chee. The hip-hop artiste has been blacklisted in China since the release of his satirical single Fragile in 2021. The track was said to be full of barbed references to Chinese President Xi Jinping and China-related issues, such as the political status of Taiwan and censorship in China. Bee, the lead vocalist of pop group The Wynners, took to Chinese social media platform Weibo on July 20, sharing a photo of himself with a statement. 'As a Chinese citizen, I have shown patriotism through concrete actions and firmly upheld the dignity of the country and national sentiment,' he wrote in Chinese. 'Recently, during an event in Genting, Malaysia, I took a photo with a certain person without noticing that it caused a misunderstanding.' Bee explained it was purely a courtesy interaction on a public occasion, and he was unaware of his background or past words and deeds. Without naming Namewee in the post, Bee said: 'If I had known his position earlier, I would never have had any contact with him. This incident was an unintentional mistake and does not mean that I agree with his views.' Tsang, the host of Hong Kong variety series Super Trio (1995 to present) also posted a similar statement on Weibo on July 21, adding: 'Once again, I express my deepest apologies to everyone.' Namewee has deleted the photo with Bee and Tsang from his social media accounts. In a now-deleted statement on Facebook, Namewee wrote in Chinese: 'In order not to affect the peace and stability of the 'motherland' as well as the safety of our comrades in Hong Kong in the Greater Bay Area, we have removed the previous post and photos.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

#SHOWBIZ: Former Taiwanese singer scammed by Alan Tam impersonator
HONG KONG: Former Taiwanese singer-songwriter Wu Xue Fen, who has been out of the limelight for 20 years, recently revealed she was almost conned by a man posing as Hong Kong singer Alan Tam. According to a report yesterday by 8Days, Wu and her retired husband ventured into the antique business after getting married. However, their lives took a turn when her husband was diagnosed with cancer, necessitating extensive treatment. Their business subsequently suffered, and the couple exhausted all their savings, even mortgaging their home to cover his medical expenses. To make ends meet, Wu decided to return to the entertainment industry. While navigating her financial difficulties, Wu stumbled upon what she believed to be the Facebook profile of her old friend, Hong Kong Cantopop legend Alan Tam, 74, and sent a friend request. "I met him many years ago in Singapore, where he and his band The Wynners were having a concert. He asked me out for a movie the next day," she recalled. However, when pressed about reconnecting with Tam, Wu disclosed that the person behind the Facebook account was not the real Cantopop king, but a cunning scammer. "I started chatting with the person I mistook for Alan on WeChat and confided in him about my financial troubles, asking if he could lend a hand," she explained. "He promised to help me and said he would visit me in Taiwan." Wu soon grew suspicious when she asked the scammer to call her on three separate occasions, only for him to claim he was busy each time. "Three days later, he asked me to help him purchase gift cards. I told him he should be asking his assistant to do such things for him instead." The scammer then verbally abused Wu before completely ignoring her. It was at this point that she realised she was dealing with a fraudster. "I'm glad the scammer didn't succeed," she said, adding that the experience served as a costly lesson.

Concert review: Cantopop icon 'Principal' Tam got young and old on their feet Alan Tam Classic Live in Singapore 2025 Singapore Indoor Stadium June 14 You have to give it to Hong Kong singer-actor Alan Tam, who proves that age is just a number. The showbiz veteran, who turns 75 in August, delivered a three-hour concert on June 14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He enthralled an 8,000-strong capacity crowd with close to 40 songs, keeping the energy level high throughout with nary a break. It is the kind of stamina that even younger pop stars would be envious of. The Alan Tam Classic Live tour started in Shanghai in May 2023. It has since travelled to other Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu, as well as Sydney in Australia. The Singapore leg had been highly anticipated, as it marked Tam's first solo show here since his 40th Anniversary Concert Tour in 2016. He last performed in town in December 2023 with The Wynners, as part of their 50th anniversary farewell tour at Sands Grand Ballroom. The Hong Kong pop band also comprise lead vocalist Kenny Bee, 72; guitarist Bennett Pang, 76; drummer Anthony Chan, 72; and bassist Danny Yip, 74. Tam, who began his music career in 1973 with the band, released his debut solo album, Naughty Boy, in 1979. He achieved superstardom in the 1980s and 1990s, consistently putting out platinum records. Over five decades, he has been credited with recording more than 100 albums and composing over 800 songs. The audience at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, expecting a nostalgia fest, were not let down. Kicking off the proceedings at 8.05pm, the Cantopop icon immediately launched into several of his timeless ballads, including Autumn Romance (1984) and Love Of My Life (1996). In recent years, his career has enjoyed a second wind after he appeared in several variety shows in China, which introduced him to younger fans. 'Even after 50 years in the industry, I'm still learning every day, including from the young artistes I meet,' he said. 'Their energy invigorates me and reminds me why I love music.' His Philippines-born, Hong Kong-based drummer Nicanor D Ledesma is 76. Other than his timeless hit ballads, Tam also performed fast numbers with his backup dancers. He was also accompanied by three backup vocalists. 'I definitely gave you my all tonight,' he said teasingly past 10.30pm. He then asked: 'What time is it now? Do you need to leave? Would you have transport back to Johor Bahru?', showing concern for the Malaysians who had crossed the Causeway to support him. Tam began his music career in 1973 with Hong Kong pop band The Wynners. 'No matter how old you are in the future, whenever you hear my song, I hope you will remember this evening and this feeling of warmth and energy we shared,' he said.
