Concert review: Cantopop icon 'Principal' Tam got young and old on their feet
Alan Tam Classic Live in Singapore 2025 Singapore Indoor Stadium June 14
You have to give it to Hong Kong singer-actor Alan Tam, who proves that age is just a number.
The showbiz veteran, who turns 75 in August, delivered a three-hour concert on June 14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
He enthralled an 8,000-strong capacity crowd with close to 40 songs, keeping the energy level high throughout with nary a break. It is the kind of stamina that even younger pop stars would be envious of.
The Alan Tam Classic Live tour started in Shanghai in May 2023. It has since travelled to other Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu, as well as Sydney in Australia.
The Singapore leg had been highly anticipated, as it marked Tam's first solo show here since his 40th Anniversary Concert Tour in 2016.
He last performed in town in December 2023 with The Wynners, as part of their 50th anniversary farewell tour at Sands Grand Ballroom. The Hong Kong pop band also comprise lead vocalist Kenny Bee, 72; guitarist Bennett Pang, 76; drummer Anthony Chan, 72; and bassist Danny Yip, 74.
Tam, who began his music career in 1973 with the band, released his debut solo album, Naughty Boy, in 1979. He achieved superstardom in the 1980s and 1990s, consistently putting out platinum records.
Over five decades, he has been credited with recording more than 100 albums and composing over 800 songs.
The audience at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, expecting a nostalgia fest, were not let down.
Kicking off the proceedings at 8.05pm, the Cantopop icon immediately launched into several of his timeless ballads, including Autumn Romance (1984) and Love Of My Life (1996).

The audience was an even mix of Baby Boomers and Generation X, from those in their 50s to their 70s, with a sprinkling of millennials, and Tam expressed his appreciation for them all.
In recent years, his career has enjoyed a second wind after he appeared in several variety shows in China, which introduced him to younger fans.
'Even after 50 years in the industry, I'm still learning every day, including from the young artistes I meet,' he said. 'Their energy invigorates me and reminds me why I love music.'

Affectionately known as Principal Tam, a nod to his stature in the Hong Kong entertainment industry, the enduring superstar is famous for playfully insisting he is 'forever 25'.
He clearly keeps himself in good shape, evident when he revealed toned, buff arms in a short-sleeved shirt.
And he pointed out that he was not the oldest performer at the concert. His Philippines-born, Hong Kong-based drummer Nicanor D Ledesma is 76.
Other than his timeless hit ballads, Tam also performed fast numbers with his backup dancers.

Tam performed fast numbers such as Love Trap (1985) and Karaoke Forever (1990), matching the pace of his eight dancers without any signs of breathlessness. He was also accompanied by three backup vocalists.
'I definitely gave you my all tonight,' he said teasingly past 10.30pm.
He then asked: 'What time is it now? Do you need to leave? Would you have transport back to Johor Bahru?', showing concern for the Malaysians who had crossed the Causeway to support him.
Tam began his music career in 1973 with Hong Kong pop band The Wynners.

Despite the late hour, the audience remained, singing along with gusto, prompting Tam to praise their dedication.
As he launched into his encore, which featured his iconic 1985 track Friends, many in the crowd were on their feet and waving lightsticks.
'No matter how old you are in the future, whenever you hear my song, I hope you will remember this evening and this feeling of warmth and energy we shared,' he said.
For his parting shot, he advised: 'Always be true to yourself and live in the moment.'

SINGAPORE – Home-grown actress Michelle Chia has tied the knot with her non-celebrity boyfriend, identified only as Mr Jackson B, after they dated for more than two months. The news was first reported by Chinese-language evening daily Shin Min Daily News on Aug 9. The couple held their wedding on an Indonesian island on Aug 8. They chose the date as it is easy to remember and they could celebrate future anniversaries along with National Day, which falls on Aug 9. Eight is also a favourite number among the Chinese community, as it symbolises prosperity. Chia, who turns 50 on Sep 19, told Shin Min: 'I didn't expect the biggest gift (my husband) would show up so suddenly in my life... the wedding on Friday was the best birthday gift I could ask for.' They chose the wedding venue as it holds great significance for them. The couple celebrated Mr B's birthday there in February. The wedding was attended by about 40 family members and close friends, including artistes Jesseca Liu, Apple Hong, Priscelia Chan and Jayley Woo – Chia's co-stars from local TV series The Queen (2016). The wedding expenses were covered by Mr B, 41, a real estate consultant. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'I wept for a full five minutes while watching it.' Chia, who said in an interview with Shin Min in 2016 that she had no plans to re-marry, told Zaobao that Mr B changed her perspective on marriage. She was married to Malaysian actor Shaun Chen, 46, between 2009 and 2011. 'Our relationship is like that of close friends,' Chia said of Mr B. 'We look forward to coming home every day after work, staying home together, watching TV and chatting about life. We drink coffee together in the morning and can chat non-stop for one or two hours. The duo first met in 2008, but their paths did not cross often over the years. In September 2024, Mr B wished Chia a happy birthday via a text message. Soon after, the two met for coffee along with a mutual friend, but there was no spark at that time. It was not until 2025 that the couple began to interact more frequently, often meeting for coffee and chatting for four to five hours. 'It felt like being a student again,' Chia said. 'We talked about everything, including our ideals and philosophies in life, growing and learning from each other. We realised we are really alike: I am the female version of him, and he is the male version of me.' Their first date was at National University of Singapore's UTown, which was also where Mr B proposed. His sister, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews were also there that day. On their age gap, Chia said she does not feel like she is approaching 50, both in spirit and appearance. She added that she has many aspirations and remains energetic and positive. Mr B affirmed that what he requires in a partner is spiritual compatibility, and that nothing else matters. The couple currently have no plans for a honeymoon. Chia will fly to Beijing for filming, before travelling to India with friends in September. 'My husband cannot accompany me due to work commitments. But I'll be back a few days before my birthday,' she said.

'Fate is unstoppable': Michelle Chia weds real estate agent boyfriend in whirlwind marriage, Entertainment News

Local actress Michelle Chia, 49, has tied the knot after a whirlwind romance. Her husband is 41-year-old real estate agent Jackson B, and their destination wedding was held on Saturday (Aug 8) on an Indonesian island, local Chinese media reported. Jackson, whose Chinese name is Chen Xiazhong, was a former Star Search contestant back in 2007 but left showbiz after nine months, Shin Min Daily News reported. Michelle was previously married to Malaysian-born actor Shaun Chen, with the pair announcing their divorce in 2011 after two years of marriage. On Sunday, Michelle and Jackson proudly showed glimpses of their special day and re-posted well-wishes from guests on social media. In a personal message posted on his Instagram account, Jackson wrote: "On Aug 8, I married my soulmate, Michelle Chia, in a private ceremony overseas - a moment more precious than any deals I've ever closed. Just pure love and commitment; sealed with a kiss, not a contract. "With SG60 approaching, we're honoured to celebrate our own chapter in this special year for Singapore. Here's to building a lifetime of memories together." [embed] Their wedding was an intimate affair, with only about 40 close friends and family in attendance. Amongst the bridal party were Michelle's celebrity pals such as Jesseca Liu, Priscelia Chan, Jaylee Woo, Apple Hong and Priscelia Lee. [embed] Other guests included local DJ Yasminne Cheng, actress Cynthia MacQuarrie and former actress Ericia Lee. [embed] Michelle, had told Shin Min Daily News in an interview that they'd decided to get married after dating for just over two months. The pair had first met each other back in 2008 — a brief encounter which Michelle admitted she doesn't remember. Their next meeting was in 2013 where they got to know each other better, but neither contacted each other until 2020. But it was only in 2024 when Jackson sent Michelle a birthday greeting did their relationship began to deepen. The pair subsequently went for coffee with a mutual friend and began chatting more frequently this year, reported Shin Min. To Michelle, their blossoming relationship felt like "a campus romance" where they would chat for four to five hours at a time, about everything under the sun. "I realised we are both very alike; I'm the female version of him, and he's the male version of me," said Michelle. While marriage wasn't on the cards at first, their attitudes soon changed. She told Shin Min: "Fate is unstoppable. Initially we felt we would be content just being together, but after that, our mindset changed." When asked what drew them to each other, Michelle said she appreciates his diligence, thoughtfulness and open-mindedness to differing opinions, while Jackson admires her patience, caring and consideration in the way she communicates with him. Their age gap was never an issue either, they told Lianhe Zaobao, with Jackson adding that compatibility was the most important criteria to him. According to Shin Min, he proposed to her at UTown at the National University of Singapore, as it was the location of their first date. While the proposal caught her off-guard, it did not come as a complete surprise. "He'd asked me before if I would mind having a 'lightning marriage'. I told him no, 'why would I mind?'" said Michelle. [[nid:714738]] candicecai@

NDP 2025: Crowds gather at Marina Bay as celebrations extend beyond Padang for the first time, Singapore News

Even as people were taking their seats in Padang, the Marina Bay area was with buzzing with various local acts performing at the Waterfront Promenade entertaining the crowd with a mix of pop tracks and National Day Parade theme songs. More than 200,000 are expected to be in the area to be part of Singapore's 60th birthday bash. Among the crowd was a Singapore couple, who arrived as early at 2.30pm to secure good spots to watch the festivities and even set up a tripod to capture photos. Soaking in the National Day Parade atmosphere for the first time were 20-year-olds Ashraff and Haini, who are especially looking forward to the fireworks — particularly the special SG60 finale feature at the end. Ashraff also surprised Haini with her favourite perfume, given in celebration of her birthday three days earlier, as they enjoyed a picnic with a spread of food. Another Singaporean who was in the thick of action with her immediate and extended family was 30-year-old Jean Toh. Toh's family, who usually gather at their parents' house to watch the celebrations on TV, arrived around 2pm to reserve good spots for the event. She also said that her 8-year-old son was especially excited to see the fly-past. 'Take Singapore as an inspiration' Ato Wright, who arrived from Ghana, West Africa, on Aug 6, said he was very impressed by Singapore's success. Speaking to AsiaOne, the YouTuber, also known as Red Ringo, credited former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore's leadership as key reasons for his interest in the country. "A country like Ghana has so many resources, but we suffer because of poor leadership and corruption. I hope we can learn from Singapore, and I will keep telling people back home about Singapore," said Wright, adding that he sees Singapore as an inspiration for education, leadership, and technology. "I always take Singapore as an inspiration for developing countries." Wright, who will be in Singapore for a week, said that during his visit, he managed to explore religious sites and cultural areas. He also shared his love for Maxwell Food Centre and tried different types of food, including Indian, Chinese, Malay, and Vietnamese cuisines during his stay. To commemorate the SG60 milestone, the scale of NDP 2025 is different from previous parades with the national day live show extended from Padang to Marina Bay for the first time. This year's NDP will also feature a first-ever "Jump of Unity" with the Red Lions and Naval Divers landing at two iconic locations: the Padang and Marina Bay. [[nid:721156]]
